What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A beginner-friendly gaming PC is one that runs the games you want at the resolution and smoothness you expect, without blowing your full setup budget. Start with a short game list, check each game’s requirements, choose a realistic performance target, and then compare desktops, laptops, or custom builds against your needs.
What does a beginner gaming PC need?
There is no universal hardware tier called “beginner” or “entry-level.” Intel uses 1080p at roughly 60 frames per second as an example baseline for its budget-PC guidance, not as an industry-wide definition. Your own target depends on the games you play and the monitor you use.

Before looking at product listings, write down a few games you want to play. For each one, find the developer’s published minimum and recommended system requirements, then compare them with the PC’s processor (CPU), graphics processor (GPU), memory (RAM), and storage. A system that meets recommended requirements is a more sensible starting point than one that only meets the minimum; stronger CPU or GPU specifications may improve performance. Intel’s prebuilt-PC guide recommends beginning with the games and their requirements.
- Casual or less demanding games: check the requirements for the particular titles rather than assuming every game needs a dedicated high-end graphics card.
- Mainstream AAA games: pay close attention to the recommended GPU and CPU requirements and the resolution you intend to use.
- Competitive shooters: a high-refresh-rate display can make sense, but only if the PC can produce frame rates that take advantage of it.
Higher resolutions and refresh rates place greater demands on graphics performance. A 1080p target generally leaves more system choices than aiming for higher resolutions or very high frame rates. Choose the display target before settling on a PC, not after.

How to set a realistic budget for the whole setup
Set a maximum for the complete setup, not just the tower. A monitor, keyboard, and mouse may be additional costs; multiplayer players may also want a headset. If you already own compatible peripherals, reuse them and keep that money available for the computer or display you actually need.
Also check what a quoted build price includes. For example, Tom’s Hardware’s gaming build recommendations, last updated September 30, 2026, exclude operating-system and peripheral costs from their totals. Those totals are therefore not the same as a complete, ready-to-play setup budget.

Prebuilt, laptop, or custom desktop: which route fits?
| Route | Good fit when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Prebuilt desktop | You want an assembled system and prefer a single support contact. | Component choice is more constrained than with a custom build; check the exact configuration and upgrade options. |
| Gaming laptop | You need portability or do not want a fixed desk setup. | Compare it against your portability needs and target games; a desktop and laptop should not be treated as interchangeable choices. |
| Custom desktop build | You want to choose individual components and are comfortable taking on the build process. | It offers more component choice, but requires assembling and checking a compatible system yourself. |
A prebuilt can be a low-friction way to start; a custom build offers more control over component selection. These are trade-offs, not proof that one route is best for every new player. HP’s pro-prebuilt guidance presents assembled systems as practical for many first-time buyers, while component-focused build guides such as Tom’s Hardware’s cover the custom route.

How much memory and storage should you look for?
HP’s 2026 buying guide recommends 16 GB of RAM as a gaming minimum and 32 GB for streaming or heavier multitasking. These are HP’s recommendations, not guaranteed requirements for every title or workload, so check the games you plan to play.
HP also recommends starting with at least a 512 GB NVMe SSD and notes that larger games may make 1 TB or more useful. Storage is often easier to expand later than a graphics card, but upgradeability depends on the specific computer. Confirm the available slots, capacity limits, and warranty terms for the configuration you are considering.

What to check before buying—and what to do if a game runs poorly
- List your games and targets. Note the titles you want, their published minimum and recommended requirements, and whether you are aiming for 1080p, a higher resolution, or a high refresh rate.
- Compare the listing with those requirements. Check the exact CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage—not only the product family name or a general gaming label.
- Calculate the complete cost. Add any monitor or peripherals you need, while accounting for compatible equipment you can reuse.
- Check ownership details. Confirm ports, physical fit, warranty, support arrangements, and which parts can be upgraded on the actual model.
- Adjust settings before assuming a part has failed. Steam Support advises that manually lowering or adjusting a game’s video options can increase FPS. If the system does not meet that game’s requirements, an appropriate hardware upgrade may be needed.
Steam’s general guidance is available through Steam Support’s performance troubleshooting page. If you are comparing systems, use the games’ requirements and your intended display as the basis for the decision; a single universal “best beginner PC” cannot account for both.
