A fake iPhone Duo preorder page reportedly used Apple-like branding and a $500 voucher lure while attempting to exploit vulnerable iPhones. Malwarebytes says the attempt began just by opening the page—no form submission or download tap was needed. Its analysts examined captured code, but did not test it on an iPhone or observe data leaving a device. Verify any offer through Apple or a retailer you already trust, and install the latest iOS update.
What was the iPhone Duo preorder scam?
Malwarebytes reported on September 29, 2026, that it had analyzed a fake Apple-style offer promising a $500 “Authorized Partner Exclusive” voucher and AppleCare+ in exchange for contact details. The page asked for a name, email address, and phone number, with WhatsApp marked as preferred, and said no upfront payment was required. Its countdown restarted when the page was reloaded, its privacy, terms, and sales links went nowhere, and its listed sizes and colors did not match Apple’s announcement. Malwarebytes’ analysis describes the captured page and code.

The offer was not simply a suspicious form. Malwarebytes says the analyzed page attempted to start a web exploit when opened. On iPhones, it reportedly tried to reopen itself in Safari, while an invisible frame checked the iOS version and selected code. The form handler in the captured version did not read or transmit the submitted details; instead, it displayed a fake “Pre-Order Successful” message. The exploit attempt had already begun in the background.

What the captured code could have accessed
Malwarebytes says the payload attempted to send device details, app lists, Apple Notes, saved credentials, cryptocurrency wallet data, photo thumbnails, and other files. Those are reported capabilities of analyzed code, not confirmed theft from victims. Malwarebytes did not test the exploit on an iPhone and did not observe data leaving a device; its report does not establish how many people encountered the page or suffered a successful compromise.
How to verify the real iPhone Duo preorder
Apple announced that iPhone Duo preorders begin Friday, October 16, 2026, at 5 a.m. Pacific Time in more than 70 countries and regions, with availability beginning October 23. Apple says availability in 28 other countries and regions starts October 30, so dates are not identical everywhere. Confirm the timing for your location on Apple’s announcement or by navigating directly to Apple’s storefront.

Apple announced the Duo on September 9, 2026, in star white and night sky. Its U.S. starting price is $1,999. Those are useful checks against a suspicious offer, but prices and regional availability can vary; consult the official storefront for the current local listing. Do not treat the scam’s mismatched colors or sizes as the only warning sign.
- Ignore preorder links in unfamiliar ads, messages, or social posts. Open Apple’s site yourself or use a retailer you already know and trust.
- Check the announced preorder date, model details, and price against the official source.
- Do not trust an “exclusive” voucher because it uses Apple-like logos or says no payment is due. A resetting countdown and policy links that do not work are additional red flags.
- Do not assume a retailer is an authorized preorder destination unless you can verify it independently.
What to do if you opened the page
If you still have the suspicious link, do not reopen it to investigate. Malwarebytes recommends updating and restarting the iPhone if the page was opened. Apple’s guidance is to install the latest available iOS updates; it says devices with updated software were protected against the reported web attacks. Apple’s security guidance also says Lockdown Mode protects against these specific attacks on devices that cannot yet update, while advising users to update as soon as possible.

- Restart the iPhone: Do so after updating. A restart is a sensible response step, but it cannot establish that nothing was exposed or reverse any data that may already have left the device.
- Assess account risk: If compromise seems plausible, change important passwords from a trusted device, starting with email, Apple Account, banking, and cryptocurrency accounts. Enable two-factor authentication where available.
- Take extra wallet precautions if relevant: Malwarebytes advises moving cryptocurrency funds to a new wallet with a new recovery phrase, created from a trusted device. This is precautionary guidance, not evidence that your wallet was accessed.
- Report without revisiting: Preserve the URL or a screenshot, without reopening the page, and report it to your national cybercrime reporting service.
What is known—and not known—about the exploit
The exact iOS version range targeted by the fake preorder page has not been confirmed in Malwarebytes’ report. Google’s March 2026 account of the related DarkSword chain covered campaigns targeting iOS 18.4 through 18.7 and says the vulnerabilities it reported had been patched with iOS 26.3, most earlier. That historical range does not establish which versions the fake preorder page targeted. Google Threat Intelligence Group’s DarkSword report concerns the chain it documented, not a confirmed technical specification for this page.
For practical purposes, Apple’s advice is the key one: keep iOS current. Apple says updated devices were protected against the reported web attacks, and recommends updating even if Lockdown Mode is enabled. Avoid treating related exploit reporting as evidence that a specific iPhone was infected; the available report documents an attempted capability, not observed data theft from a tested device.
