Before joining a coffee shop hotspot, review your Android phone’s automatic Wi-Fi behavior, keep Private DNS on, decide whether to use a VPN, and be cautious with HTTPS and sensitive transactions. These steps reduce exposure; they cannot make an unfamiliar hotspot or website trustworthy.
Android menu names and availability vary by version and manufacturer. If a path below does not match your phone, search Settings for the named control.

1. Turn off automatic Wi-Fi behavior you don’t want
Android can turn Wi-Fi on near saved networks, and it can notify you when open networks are available. Review both controls so your phone does not connect—or prompt you to connect—when you did not intend to.

- Open Settings and go to Network & internet (on some phones, Connections).
- Tap Internet or Wi-Fi, then look for Network preferences or the Wi-Fi options menu.
- Turn off Turn on Wi-Fi automatically if you do not want Wi-Fi enabled near saved networks.
- Review Notify for public networks or Open network notification. Turn it off if you do not want alerts about nearby open hotspots.
The notification setting alerts you; it does not by itself join a network. Controls vary across devices and Android versions. Google’s Android network settings help notes that some steps require Android 12 or newer, and the Android Open Source Project describes these Wi-Fi features in its Wi-Fi infrastructure documentation. The FTC also advises changing smartphone settings to prevent automatic connections to public Wi-Fi in its secure remote access guidance.

2. Keep Private DNS enabled
Private DNS protects DNS queries and answers—the lookups that help your phone find a site’s internet address. Google recommends leaving it on. Find it under Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS on many Android phones; search Settings for “Private DNS” if that route differs.
Its protection has a clear boundary: Private DNS does not encrypt all internet traffic and is not a replacement for a VPN. It also does not tell you whether a hotspot or website is legitimate. See Google’s Android guidance on Private DNS.

3. Consider a VPN on unsecured Wi-Fi
A VPN can add a privacy layer when you must use unsecured public Wi-Fi. The FBI recommends choosing a VPN that starts when the device first connects if unsecured Wi-Fi is necessary; the FTC also recommends VPN use in public Wi-Fi contexts. A VPN does not prove that the hotspot, its sign-in page, or the site you visit is trustworthy, and it does not replace careful browsing. Neither agency’s cited guidance evaluates or endorses a particular provider.

4. Check HTTPS, and keep sensitive transactions off open Wi-Fi when practical
HTTPS encrypts traffic between your browser and the website, but it does not establish that the site itself is honest. Check for HTTPS before entering information, and keep Android and your browser updated. Be especially cautious with a captive portal—the sign-in page shown when joining a hotspot. Do not enter sensitive details into a page that seems suspicious simply because it appeared after connecting.
The FTC’s February 2023 consumer guidance says, “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” That applies to ordinary use of encrypted websites, not every network or transaction. CISA takes a more conservative position for personal business: “Avoid using open Wi-Fi networks to conduct personal business, bank, or shop online.” If an open hotspot is your only Wi-Fi option, use cellular data for banking, shopping, or similarly sensitive activity when possible.
