The goal is not to do every channel or follow a fixed weekly schedule; it is to find a small set of actions that can reach your customers, support a concrete business goal, and fit the time and budget you actually have.
Start with the customer and the next business goal
Choose a marketing activity only after you know whom it should reach and what you want it to help achieve. A goal might be to learn whether a particular problem matters to prospective customers, generate inquiries for a defined offer, or bring existing customers back. A channel is not a goal: posting regularly, for example, matters only if it helps you reach the right people or learn something useful.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) suggests investigating demand, market size, economic conditions, location, competition, and pricing as part of market research. You do not need to answer every question before taking action. Start with the uncertainty most likely to change what you offer or how you sell it. The SBA’s business-planning guidance discusses both market research and lean business plans.
Use existing information for broad questions
Secondary research—information already collected by other organizations—can be an efficient first step for broad, quantifiable questions, such as whether a market exists or how conditions may be changing. It can help narrow your assumptions, but it may not tell you why a specific customer would choose your particular offer.

Talk to customers about offer-specific questions
Direct research, such as conversations with prospective customers, can provide more specific insight into their needs and reactions to your offer. It also takes time and may cost money. Match the method to the question: use existing sources to understand the wider market, and customer conversations when you need to understand a particular audience or proposition.
Turn the strategy into a small, usable plan
A marketing plan translates choices into action. The SBA notes that planning can help keep marketing work on schedule and budget, and that “Marketing takes time, money, and preparation.” Its marketing and sales guidance identifies the main elements to consider. For a solo founder, make each element specific but keep the plan small enough to maintain:
- Target market: Name the people or organizations you want to reach, rather than “everyone who could use this.”
- Competitive advantage: State why this audience might choose your offer over alternatives, including doing nothing.
- Goal: Choose a business outcome or a question you need to answer. Make it clear what a useful result would look like.
- Methods: Select only the activities that can plausibly reach that audience and advance the goal.
- Budget: Account for both money and the founder’s time. An activity with little direct expense can still be costly if it displaces essential work.
- Evaluation: Decide what information you will use to judge whether the activity is worth continuing.
Compare channels by fit, effort, and cost
There is no source-backed universal ranking of channels for solo founders. Public guidance names options such as social media, e-newsletters and email campaigns, flyers, posters, and influencer marketing, but does not establish which performs best. Compare each candidate against your own audience and goal instead.

| Option | When it may fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Social media | When your target customers use the relevant platform and the format suits your message. | Time to create and maintain content, the skills required, any monetary costs, and whether you can evaluate results against your goal. |
| E-newsletter or email campaign | When you have a relevant way to reach people by email and a useful reason to contact them. | Time to develop and send messages, any service or production costs, and what response or business outcome you can observe. |
| Flyers or posters | When customers can be reached in a relevant physical location. | Production and distribution effort, monetary cost, and whether you can tell if the material prompted a useful response. |
| Influencer marketing | When a relevant influencer can reach the audience you want and the proposed activity supports a defined goal. | Time spent identifying and coordinating the activity, monetary cost, audience fit, and how you will evaluate the result. |
These are possibilities, not prescriptions. The Australian Government’s marketing-plan guidance includes market research, positioning, and lower-cost approaches such as social media and e-newsletters. The Library of Congress’s promotion guide also lists email campaigns and influencer marketing. Neither source establishes comparative performance for your business.
Before committing, ask whether the audience is reachable through the channel, whether you can execute it with your available skills and time, what it will cost, and whether you will have enough information to evaluate it. If those answers are unclear, test a smaller version or choose a method better matched to what you need to learn.
Make time a constraint in the plan, not an afterthought
A plan that assumes more capacity than you have will be difficult to sustain. Write down the hours you can realistically spare after product work, sales, and customer delivery. Then limit the number of active marketing activities to what those hours can support. There is no established weekly hour allocation that fits every solo founder; available time depends on the business, its stage, and its obligations.

- KNOW WHAT IS WORKING AND WHAT IS NOT Each quarter opens with a structured review across revenue, time, clients, marketing, and content, so you understand what actually happened in your business before you decide what comes next.
- QUARTERLY PLANNING SYSTEM Break your annual vision into four focused 90-day plans using the 12-week-year structure that coaches and entrepreneurs rely on, giving you a strategic layer that sits above your daily calendar and holds the direction your scheduling tools cannot.
- TRACK REVENUE-GENERATING ACTIVITIES EVERY MONTH Every month gets a dedicated spread to set priorities, track revenue and the activities driving it, and review results against plan, keeping the business moving between quarterly reviews.
- A5 LINEN HARDCOVER, FULLY UNDATED A5 size (5.8" x 8.3") in linen with gold foil stamping, reinforced binding, and thick lay-flat pages built to hold a full year of planning. Organized by quarter and fully undated, so you start in any month without wasting a page. For business owners who invest in tools that match what they're building.
- A THOUGHTFUL GIFT FOR ENTREPRENEURS, COACHES AND CREATORS A quarterly planning system makes a purposeful gift for someone building a business alongside a full life, useful long after a birthday or a business milestone has passed because they will reach for it at the start of every quarter and every month.
Use a simple decision rule: keep an activity when it plausibly reaches the intended customer, supports the chosen goal, and produces information you can use. Reconsider one that repeatedly consumes effort without evidence of audience fit or progress toward the goal. A quiet result is not automatically proof that a channel can never work; first consider whether the audience, message, execution, and evaluation method were appropriate.

The SBA describes possible small-business AI uses including analyzing business data, making reusable templates, and generating or scheduling social content. These may help with particular tasks, but the guidance does not establish that AI saves time or guarantees growth. The SBA’s AI guidance for small businesses is best read as a set of potential uses rather than a promise of results.
Consider AI only where a task is already part of your plan: for example, preparing a draft template for a recurring message or organizing data you need to review. Check the output before using it, and do not let producing more material become a substitute for reaching the right customers or assessing whether the activity helps the business.

Review what is earning its place
Revisit the plan when customer needs, market conditions, or your capacity change. Compare what each activity required with what it helped you learn or achieve. Continue the work that appears aligned with the audience and goal; revise or stop work that absorbs time without a clear reason to remain. The point is not to maintain a full marketing calendar, but to make deliberate choices about the limited attention your business can afford.
The public guidance cited here is practical planning advice, not controlled evidence that a particular channel causes growth. It does not supply solo-founder performance benchmarks, a universal marketing schedule, or a proven time allocation.
