Before buying an Amazon Echo, decide whether you want a speaker or a screen, check what setup requires, and understand the microphone, voice-history and camera controls on the exact model. Echo devices are not interchangeable: features and privacy controls vary by generation.
1. Choose a speaker or a screen first
Echo is a family of devices, not one model. Amazon’s Echo setup directory includes speaker families such as Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and Echo Studio, and screen families such as Echo Show and Echo Hub.

A speaker-only model is the simpler fit if you mainly want voice interaction and audio. A screen is worth considering when you want visual information or camera-dependent features. For example, Amazon’s setup documentation includes the Echo Dot Max as a speaker and the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) as a screen model; those examples are not a ranking or a claim about current price or availability.
When comparing candidates, start with the form factor, then check the exact generation, camera controls and accessibility features you need. Current local price and availability must be checked against the listings where you plan to buy; Amazon’s cited support pages do not establish either.

2. What do I need to set up an Echo?
Plan on an Amazon account and Wi-Fi. Amazon’s model-specific Echo Dot Max setup instructions also list the device, its power adapter, the Wi-Fi name and password, and the Alexa app, which is used to complete setup. Requirements and steps can differ by model, so use the instructions for the device you choose.
- Have the Echo and its power adapter ready, along with your Amazon account and Wi-Fi details.
- Install or open the Alexa app and follow the instructions for your exact Echo model.
- Use the model-specific setup guidance if the app’s prompts or device controls differ from what you expect.
3. What happens to your voice recordings?
Amazon says Echo devices are designed to detect the wake word you choose. In Amazon’s description, after the device detects that word, it starts recording audio to send to the cloud, including a fraction of a second before the wake word. 4. Can you turn off the microphone?
Yes. Amazon says pressing the microphone-off button disconnects microphone power and turns on a red light. While the microphone is off, the Echo cannot respond to voice commands; turn it back on to use hands-free voice control again. This physical control may suit buyers who want a visible way to disable listening, but it also means voice interaction is unavailable in that state. 5. Can you turn off the camera on an Echo Show?
Camera controls and their consequences depend on the Show model. Amazon says the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release) use their cameras for features including Live View, Drop In and Visual ID. Disabling the camera affects camera-dependent features, including Live View. Check Amazon’s camera enable/disable instructions and its explanation of camera settings for those models before deciding whether the controls fit your needs.

Do not assume every Echo Show has the same camera arrangement. For instance, Amazon’s setup guide for the Echo Show 5 (3rd Generation) describes a built-in camera shutter. Confirm whether the specific model uses a physical shutter, an electronic control, or both, and whether disabling the camera removes a feature you intend to use.
6. Verify accessibility and generation-specific features
Amazon’s Echo Show 8 (2025 release) setup guidance lists Tap to Alexa, captioning, screen magnifier and VoiceView among Echo accessibility features. If you rely on one of them, confirm it is supported on the exact device and software configuration you plan to use; a family-level feature list does not establish support on every Echo generation. - Choose speaker-only or screen based on the functions you will actually use.
- Confirm the exact model and generation, rather than relying on a family name alone.
- For a Show, check camera controls and the features that depend on the camera.
