It is generated on the first launch, controls identity, visibility, maps, player and vehicle limits, logging, and network binding, and is read again when the server restarts. The safest approach is to launch the installed server once, edit the generated file in its actual working directory, keep the file’s comments as the version-specific reference, and then restart after every intentional change.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted BeamNG.drive servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What ServerConfig.toml does
BeamMP-Server creates ServerConfig.toml during its first startup. The same process creates the log files and the Resources folder relative to the process’s working directory. That detail matters: a service, container, shortcut, and manually opened terminal can all start the executable from different directories. If you edit a copy beside the executable while the service starts elsewhere, the running server will continue using another file.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The file uses TOML syntax. Keep the [General] section, put text values in quotation marks, and preserve the key names and capitalization shown by the generated template. The comments in that generated template are the most current explanation for the exact server version you installed, so do not replace it with an older example without checking the newly generated file first.
Generate and edit the file safely
- Start BeamMP-Server once from the directory you intend to use for the server. Wait for it to create
ServerConfig.toml, logs, andResources, then stop it cleanly. - Open the generated
ServerConfig.tomlwith a plain-text editor. Do not save it as rich text or add a second file extension such as.txt. - Change only the values you need. Preserve the
[General]header, equals signs, quotation marks around strings, and the spelling of every key. - Save the file in the working directory used by the launch command, service, or container. If you are unsure, inspect the startup command and the first lines of the server log for the process directory.
- Restart BeamMP-Server. Configuration is reread at startup; changing the file while the process is running does not apply the new values to that session.
Make a backup before large edits. A backup gives you a known-good copy when a typo prevents startup, while the newly generated file remains the best guide to options supported by your installed release.

ServerConfig.toml settings at a glance
| Setting | What it controls | Important value or limit | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
Port |
The network port on which the server accepts connections. | Documented range: 1024–65535. | Choose an unused port and use that same number in router forwarding and firewall rules. |
IP |
The local address to which the server binds. | The official example uses "::". |
Keep the generated/default value unless you have a specific multi-interface or IPv6 binding requirement. |
AuthKey |
Authentication used to identify a public server with the BeamMP backend. | Text secret. | Keep it private; do not publish it in screenshots, logs, or repositories. |
Private |
Whether the server is hidden from the public server list. | true hides it; false allows listing when public-server requirements are met. |
Use Direct Connect for an intentionally private server. |
Name |
The server-list name. | Maximum 250 characters. | Use a recognizable name and keep it within the backend limit. |
Tags |
Search and display tags for the server. | Text value. | Separate useful descriptors with commas, as in the official example. |
Description |
Longer server-list information. | Maximum 1,000 characters. | Explain the server’s rules or play style without exposing private credentials. |
MaxPlayers |
The maximum number of connected players. | Whole-number setting. | Choose a value your hardware, map, mods, and connection can sustain. |
MaxCars |
The maximum number of cars each player may have. | Whole-number setting. | Cars above the limit are deleted immediately when a player tries to spawn them. |
Map |
The map loaded for the session. | Must be a valid installed map path; the official example uses /levels/ks_nord/info.json. |
For custom content, install the map as a server resource and verify the exact path. |
ResourceFolder |
The folder containing server resources. | A valid path, commonly Resources. |
Use a separate valid path if your deployment stores resources elsewhere. |
LogChat |
Chat logging. | Boolean switch. | Enable for a specific moderation or troubleshooting need; disable noisy logging when it is no longer needed. |
Debug |
Diagnostic logging. | Boolean switch. | Turn it on while investigating a fault, then return to routine logging. |
InformationPacket |
An operational information switch shown in the official configuration example. | Boolean switch. | Leave the generated/default choice unless you have a reason to change it. |
A safe starting configuration
This example follows the structure in the official setup guide. Replace the sample authentication key, identity text, map, and capacity with values appropriate to your installation.
[General]
Port = 30814
AuthKey = "your-auth-key"
AllowGuests = false
LogChat = false
Debug = false
IP = "::"
Private = true
InformationPacket = true
Name = "My BeamMP Server"
Tags = "Freeroam,Modded,Racing"
MaxCars = 2
MaxPlayers = 10
Map = "/levels/ks_nord/info.json"
Description = "Friends server"
ResourceFolder = "Resources"
AllowGuests appears in the official setup example. Keep the key and value generated for your installed version unless you specifically need to alter guest access and have confirmed its current behavior in that version’s comments.
Private servers, public listing, and AuthKey
Keeping a server private
With Private = true, the server does not appear in the BeamMP server list. This is the appropriate setting for a friends-only session or a test instance. Give players the host’s address and port through Direct Connect instead of expecting them to find the server in the browser.

Publishing a server
Set Private = false only when you intend to be listed publicly. A public server also needs a valid AuthKey so the BeamMP backend can identify it. A correct key does not override network problems: the process still needs to bind successfully, the selected port must be reachable, and the firewall and router must pass the required traffic.
Protecting the key
Treat AuthKey like a password. Do not commit the file to a public repository, paste the key into support screenshots, or leave it visible in logs. If a key is exposed, replace it through the applicable BeamMP account or administration process before returning the server to public operation.
Port, IP binding, forwarding, and firewall rules
Port is the number clients use to reach the server. Select an unused value from 1024 through 65535. A port already occupied by another service prevents BeamMP-Server from binding, even when the TOML syntax is perfect.

- Choose one unused port, such as the official example’s
30814. - Set that number in
ServerConfig.toml. - If the host is behind a home router, forward the same port from the router to the host machine’s local address.
- Allow BeamMP-Server through the host firewall for incoming and outgoing TCP and UDP on that port, following the protocol requirements in the official setup guide.
- Restart the server and test from outside the local network. A local test alone can succeed even when internet-side forwarding is wrong.
The default IP = "::" binds broadly and is the value shown in the official example. Keep it unless you deliberately need to bind one interface or have a specific IPv6 or multi-interface design. If the server reports an address-in-use or bind error, check for another BeamMP process or service using the port before changing unrelated settings.
Maps and server resources
Map must point to a map installed where the server can read it. A path such as /levels/gridmap_v2/info.json is valid only when that map exists in the server’s available content. The setup example uses /levels/ks_nord/info.json.
Using a custom map
- Install the custom map as a server resource in the configured resource location.
- Confirm the resource is present under the working directory’s
Resourcesfolder, or under the path specified byResourceFolder. - Copy the map’s exact relative path, including capitalization and the
info.jsonfilename, intoMap. - Restart and read the startup log for map-loading errors before troubleshooting player connections.
An incorrect map path can make a server appear to have a networking problem because clients cannot complete a usable session. Validate content placement first, then investigate ports and authentication.

Player and vehicle limits
MaxPlayers caps the number of players the server accepts. MaxCars is different: it limits cars per player. If a player attempts to spawn beyond that per-player limit, the additional cars are deleted immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe official documentation does not publish a universal performance number for either setting. A value that works on one host can fail on another because CPU, memory, map complexity, modifications, simulation load, upload bandwidth, and player behavior differ. Begin conservatively, observe server logs and in-game behavior, and increase one limit at a time. Symptoms such as delayed physics, rubber-banding, simulation stalls, or steadily rising resource use indicate that the current capacity needs to be reduced or the host needs more resources.

LogChat records chat activity, while Debug increases diagnostic output. InformationPacket is also shown as an operational switch in the official example. Extra logging is valuable when you need evidence, but it can make routine logs noisy and harder to scan.

Environment-variable overrides in current releases
Since server release 3.2.0, General settings can be overridden with environment variables. Convert the PascalCase key to uppercase words separated by underscores and add the BEAMMP_ prefix:
MaxPlayersbecomesBEAMMP_MAX_PLAYERS.NamebecomesBEAMMP_NAME.ResourceFolderbecomesBEAMMP_RESOURCE_FOLDER.
Provide string and number values as strings in the environment. Boolean values accept true or 1 for on; other values are treated as off. This is useful for containers and managed deployments where changing a mounted file is inconvenient, but keep a clear record of which values come from the environment and which remain in TOML.
The manual also documents provider controls including BEAMMP_PROVIDER_PORT_ENV and BEAMMP_PROVIDER_DISABLE_CONFIG. Provider behavior is version-sensitive, so verify the release notes for the installed server before relying on these controls. If a value seems to be ignored, inspect the launch environment and the startup log before editing the TOML again; an environment override may be taking precedence.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server does not appear in the list
- Check that
Private = false. - Confirm that
AuthKeyis present and valid for public-server identification. - Verify that the server starts without a port bind error.
- Confirm router forwarding and host firewall rules use the same port configured in the file.
- Restart after every change; the server does not live-reload the file.
Players cannot connect directly
- Check that the selected port is unused and within 1024–65535.
- Confirm the router forwards that port to the correct local host.
- Allow both incoming and outgoing TCP and UDP traffic as required by the setup guide.
- Check that
IPwas not narrowed to an interface that cannot accept the intended traffic. - Validate the map and resources after basic reachability is confirmed.
The server starts but the map fails
- Compare
Mapwith the exact installed path and filename. - For custom maps, confirm installation under
ResourceFolder. - Read the startup log for a missing-resource or path error before changing network settings.
Changes have no effect
- Confirm you edited the file in the process’s working directory, not merely beside the executable.
- Check whether an environment variable such as
BEAMMP_MAX_PLAYERSorBEAMMP_NAMEoverrides the file. - Stop and restart the server after saving.
- Compare the active file with the generated template for the installed release.
Self-hosting and managed deployments
With a self-hosted server, you are responsible for selecting the port, configuring router forwarding, opening the firewall, maintaining maps and resources, protecting backups, and restarting after configuration changes. A managed or container deployment may move some of those tasks to a provider, but you still need to know where the active configuration lives, how restarts are performed, which port is exposed, how resources are backed up, and whether environment-variable overrides are supported.
Before choosing a deployment model, verify five operational responsibilities: who controls port and firewall rules, who manages the Resources folder, how backups are restored, how restarts are triggered, and how player capacity is monitored. The BeamMP documentation defines the configuration and networking requirements but does not provide a universal capacity target or endorse a particular hosting provider.
Quick Recap
Change checklist
- Launch once so the current release generates its own template.
- Edit the active file under the actual working directory.
- Keep TOML syntax, the
[General]section, and quoted strings intact. - Use one unused port from 1024–65535 and align router and firewall rules with it.
- Use
Private = truefor Direct Connect-only access orfalsewith a validAuthKeyfor listing. - Verify map paths and custom resources before diagnosing connectivity.
- Set
MaxPlayersandMaxCarsconservatively, then tune from observed behavior. - Use diagnostic logging temporarily and remove secrets before sharing logs.
- Restart after saving, and check environment overrides in releases 3.2.0 and later.
