The right choice depends on whether you need cheap early progression, sustained damage, close-range burst, precision shots, or explosive area damage. For most players, the Assault Rifle is the safest all-purpose firearm; the Pump-Action Shotgun dominates at close range; the Rocket Launcher delivers the largest single-hit explosive damage; and the Old Bow or Crossbow are the sensible starting weapons. The 1.0-era additions—Mechanical Bow, Heavy Assault Rifle, Plasma Rifle, and Beam Launcher—give experienced players more specialized options.
The rankings below are role-based rather than a permanent DPS tier list. Attack values, schematic locations, ammunition costs, and even the available equipment roster can change with a Palworld update, so the dates attached to published figures matter.

Quick answer: which Palworld weapon should you use?
| Need | Best fit | Why it works | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cheap early progression | Old Bow, then Crossbow | Available before firearms and comparatively economical to craft | Lower sustained damage and slower fights against tough targets |
| One weapon for most situations | Assault Rifle | Magazine-fed, dependable damage at practical combat ranges | Consumes ammunition quickly and its better schematics require costly materials |
| Close-range burst | Pump-Action Shotgun | Large per-shot impact and excellent damage in caves or boss-range fights | Shorter effective range and a punishing reload when the magazine is empty |
| Deliberate precision shots | Mechanical Bow | Newer 1.0-era option for players who prefer aimed, timed shots | Less forgiving if you miss or cannot maintain charge timing |
| Long-range explosive impact | Rocket Launcher | Area damage and the highest listed legendary attack value in the cited table | Expensive ammunition and a slow firing cycle |
| Late-game sustained fire | Heavy Assault Rifle or Plasma Rifle | Extends the general-purpose automatic-fire role into the later equipment tier | Exact balance and material requirements are patch-sensitive |
For a normal first playthrough, use a Bow until the Crossbow is affordable, move to an Assault Rifle for general combat, carry a Pump-Action Shotgun for confined fights, and add a Rocket Launcher when you can support its ammunition cost. That loadout covers progression without forcing every encounter into the same range.
How to judge a weapon instead of chasing a tier list
A displayed attack number is only one part of a weapon’s value. A weapon that looks weaker on paper can be better for your character if it lets you keep a safe distance, reload less often, or use materials you can actually produce.

- Range: Determines whether you can damage a Pal or enemy before it reaches you. Shotguns lose value rapidly outside their intended distance, while bows and rifles are easier to use across open terrain.
- Burst damage: The damage delivered in a short window. This matters when you need to stagger a boss, finish an exposed weak point, or delete a dangerous target before it attacks.
- Sustained damage: Damage maintained over several magazines or volleys. Magazine size, reload animation, recoil and your accuracy all matter as much as the listed attack value.
- Magazine and reload burden: A large magazine gives you more uninterrupted firing time, but a long reload can leave you helpless in a cave or during a boss animation.
- Ammo and material cost: Firearms can be excellent only while you can keep them supplied. Compare the ammunition recipe, required ingots or advanced components, and the amount you expect to use during exploration.
- Durability: A high-durability weapon reduces repair interruptions. Published databases expose durability, magazine, ammo, level, rarity and class fields, but those values still belong to a specific version of the game.
- Technology and schematic access: The base recipe is not necessarily the ceiling. Higher-rarity schematics produce stronger versions, with Legendary documented as the top rarity in the cited references.
Pocketpair’s official server documentation uses separate technology entries for the Assault Rifle, Rocket Launcher and multi-shot shotgun, confirming that these are distinct weapon classes rather than cosmetic variants. Treat the class as a description of how the weapon is meant to be used, not as a guarantee that one class wins every fight.
Best early-game weapons: Old Bow and Crossbow
Old Bow for the first hours
The Old Bow is the best starting choice for a player who has not yet built an ammunition industry. Its materials are accessible early, arrows are inexpensive, and firing from a distance lets your Pal draw aggro while you target weak points. It also teaches the habits that remain useful later: line up a shot, avoid wasting ammunition on low-value targets, and reposition instead of standing in front of a charging Pal.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Its limitation is sustained damage. Against a high-health Alpha or a heavily armored human enemy, the bow asks you to spend more time exposed. That is a reason to progress, not a reason to skip it: the Old Bow bridges the gap until you can produce better weapons reliably.
Crossbow as the economical upgrade
Move to the Crossbow when you have the technology points and resources to support it. Progression guidance published by HowToPlayHub on September 5, 2026 places the Bow and Crossbow before the Assault Rifle, Pump-Action Shotgun and Rocket Launcher. The Crossbow keeps the low-complexity ammunition economy of the early game while delivering a stronger, more deliberate shot.
Use it when you prefer measured attacks, hunt from elevated ground, or are still saving the materials needed for firearms. Its slower cadence means every miss is expensive in time, so it is less comfortable against fast targets at close range.
Early-game operating routine
- Craft the Old Bow as soon as its technology entry and basic materials are available.
- Carry a reserve of arrows rather than spending every material on armor or decorative construction.
- Unlock the Crossbow when your ore and ingot production can absorb the upgrade.
- Keep the bow or Crossbow as a backup after obtaining a firearm; it remains useful when ammunition is scarce or a fight does not justify a bullet.
Assault Rifle: the practical all-rounder
The Assault Rifle is the most broadly useful firearm because it handles ordinary exploration, human enemies, Alpha fights and many boss phases without demanding a specialized range. Its magazine lets you maintain pressure while your Pal repositions an enemy, and automatic fire is more forgiving than a slow single-shot weapon when a target moves unpredictably.
The legendary Assault Rifle is listed at 560 attack, a 30-round magazine and 6,000 durability by Palworld Database in 2026. Those figures describe that listed legendary version, not every Assault Rifle recipe or every patch. They explain why the weapon is a practical investment: it combines a substantial magazine with durability suitable for repeated expeditions.

When the Assault Rifle is the right answer
- You want one primary weapon rather than a separate gun for every encounter.
- You fight at medium range and need to switch targets quickly.
- You can produce a steady supply of rifle ammunition.
- You value consistent damage more than the largest possible hit per trigger pull.
When to leave it in the chest
Automatic fire is wasteful against a single weak creature, and a rifle can drain your ammunition stock during long dungeon runs. At point-blank range, the Pump-Action Shotgun can end a threat with fewer shots. Against clustered enemies or a stationary boss weak point, the Rocket Launcher can justify its higher cost. Carrying the Assault Rifle does not mean firing it continuously; use short bursts and swap weapons when the situation changes.
Pump-Action Shotgun: close-range burst
The Pump-Action Shotgun is the specialist for fights that happen inside a cave, around a base entrance, or directly under a boss. Its pellets reward proximity and punish enemies that give you a clear, large target. The Palworld Wiki describes it as a powerful, high-capacity shotgun, while Palworld Database lists the legendary version at 385 attack with a 12-round magazine.
Do not compare the 385 attack figure directly with a rifle’s figure as if both shots behave identically. Shotgun performance depends on pellet connection and distance. At the intended range, the weapon’s burst can be exceptional; farther away, fewer pellets connect and the apparent advantage shrinks.

How to use it safely
- Let your Pal draw the first attack, then close the distance during the enemy’s recovery animation.
- Fire into the torso or another large hitbox rather than attempting a marginal headshot while moving.
- Reload behind terrain or during a boss’s long animation. A 12-round magazine is generous for a shotgun, but an empty weapon still takes time to cycle.
- Carry a rifle or bow for the approach. A shotgun is a poor tool for pulling distant enemies or dealing with targets on a high ledge.
Rocket Launcher: maximum explosive impact
The Rocket Launcher is the answer when you need a long-range explosive attack, area damage, or the largest single hit available in the cited legendary table. Palworld Database’s 2026 listing gives the legendary Rocket Launcher 14,000 attack. A Palworld Database guide updated July 22, 2026 calls Rocket Launcher Schematic 4 the “crown jewel” and describes 14,000 attack as the hardest-hitting craft in its table.
That number does not make the Rocket Launcher the best weapon for every second of play. Rockets are costly, the firing cycle is slow, and an explosion can be awkward when a friendly Pal or a valuable structure is close to the impact point. Use it for a high-value target or a group, not for routine wildlife that a rifle or Crossbow can handle.
Best situations for rockets
- A boss is exposed and you have time to line up a safe shot.
- Several enemies are clustered tightly enough for the explosion to matter.
- You need to damage a distant target without entering shotgun range.
- You are carrying enough ammunition that a missed shot will not end the expedition.
Rocket Launcher discipline
Plan the ammunition before leaving your base, verify the backblast and explosion area, and keep a faster weapon equipped for enemies that rush you. If rockets are your only weapon, the launcher’s reload and material demands will turn ordinary exploration into an expensive exercise.
1.0-era weapons: Mechanical Bow, Heavy Assault Rifle, Plasma Rifle and Beam Launcher
HowToPlayHub’s September 5, 2026 progression guide identifies four newer choices in the 1.0-era equipment tier: the Mechanical Bow, Heavy Assault Rifle, Plasma Rifle and Beam Launcher. Their exact damage, crafting requirements and relative ranking are patch-sensitive, so they should be treated as later alternatives rather than immutable replacements for the earlier weapons.

Mechanical Bow
The Mechanical Bow is aimed at players who like precision and deliberate timing but want a later-tier option than the ordinary Crossbow. It rewards accurate, charged shots and gives you a reason to slow down before pulling the trigger. It is a strong fit for players who scout, use elevation and can predict an enemy’s movement.
It is less forgiving than an automatic rifle. Missing a charged shot costs more than missing one round from a magazine, and a fast enemy can close the distance while you prepare the next attack. Pair it with a close-range backup rather than treating it as a universal answer.
Heavy Assault Rifle
The Heavy Assault Rifle extends the familiar automatic-fire role into the later equipment tier. Choose it when sustained pressure is more important than conserving every round and you have the production chain to maintain its ammunition. Its place relative to the standard Assault Rifle can change with balancing updates, so compare the current in-game attack, magazine, durability and ammunition entries before replacing a reliable rifle.
Plasma Rifle
The Plasma Rifle is another late-game sustained-damage option. It belongs in the loadout of a player who wants a firearm for repeated engagements and is comfortable paying the technology and material cost for a later-tier weapon. The name alone does not establish a universal DPS lead; accuracy, enemy resistances, ammunition availability and the current patch all affect the result.
Beam Launcher
The Beam Launcher is listed among the 1.0-era additions, but the supplied progression guidance does not establish a permanent numerical ranking for it. Treat it as an endgame technology to evaluate from its current recipe and weapon sheet, not as an automatic upgrade simply because it is newer.
Choose by playstyle
| Playstyle | Primary recommendation | Suggested backup | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| New or resource-conscious | Old Bow → Crossbow | Keep the earlier bow for cheap ammunition | Spend materials on firearms only after your basic production can support them |
| General-purpose explorer | Assault Rifle | Pump-Action Shotgun | Use the rifle in open areas and the shotgun when enemies enter close range |
| Cave and boss brawler | Pump-Action Shotgun | Assault Rifle or Crossbow | Commit to close range only when your Pal can create an opening |
| Precision specialist | Mechanical Bow | Shotgun for emergencies | Choose it if you consistently land charged shots and control distance |
| Explosive damage specialist | Rocket Launcher | Assault Rifle | Reserve rockets for bosses and groups; use the rifle for everything else |
| Late-game automatic-fire user | Heavy Assault Rifle or Plasma Rifle | Rocket Launcher | Compare the current patch’s ammunition economy and weapon statistics before committing |
A practical progression roadmap
- Establish ranged basics: Craft the Old Bow, gather arrow materials and learn to fight from behind your Pal.
- Upgrade economically: Move to the Crossbow when its technology and ingot requirements fit your production capacity.
- Choose a mid-game identity: Invest in the Assault Rifle for broad utility, or choose the Pump-Action Shotgun if most of your fights are close and you value burst.
- Build ammunition infrastructure: Before upgrading to expensive firearms, stock the materials required for several expeditions rather than crafting one weapon with no ammunition.
- Add a specialist weapon: Introduce the Rocket Launcher when explosive damage solves encounters that your primary weapon handles inefficiently.
- Evaluate the 1.0-era tier: At later technology levels, compare the Heavy Assault Rifle, Plasma Rifle, Beam Launcher and Mechanical Bow against your actual range and resource needs.
- Chase rarity only when useful: Higher-rarity schematics create stronger versions of familiar weapons. Legendary is the highest documented tier in the cited references, but obtaining it is a project rather than a prerequisite for finishing ordinary content.
Where legendary weapon schematics come from
Schematics are a major power gate. Reported sources include cavern chests, faction camps, Oil Rigs, supply drops, Treasure Maps, World Tree fishing and named Alpha drops. The exact route varies by weapon and can change after a patch, so treat these as reported acquisition paths rather than guarantees for every chest or run.
| Weapon schematic | Named source reported by the Palworld Wiki blueprint reference | Other reported sources |
|---|---|---|
| Rocket Launcher Schematic 4 | Jetragon | Chest loot and the broader world-activity routes listed above |
| Assault Rifle Schematic 4 | Blazamut | Chest loot and the broader world-activity routes listed above |
| Pump-Action Shotgun Schematic 4 | Suzaku | Chest loot and the broader world-activity routes listed above |
Named Alpha drops are not the only possibility. Palworld Database lists cavern chests, faction camps, Oil Rigs, supply drops, Treasure Maps and World Tree fishing among schematic sources, with the route dependent on the weapon. Check the current in-game tables after a major update before spending hours farming one location.

Ammo, durability and loadout management
Carry two ranges, not six weapons
A compact loadout is easier to supply and repair. A common arrangement is an Assault Rifle or Mechanical Bow for medium-to-long range, a Pump-Action Shotgun for emergencies, and a Rocket Launcher only when the target justifies rockets. Early players can substitute the Old Bow or Crossbow until firearm ammunition becomes routine.
Match ammunition to the expedition
Open-world gathering trips rarely need a full rocket supply. Dungeons and Alpha hunts can justify more ammunition, but only if you have a route for replacing it. Keep a reserve at base, inspect your ammunition count before fast travel, and avoid spending premium rounds on weak enemies.
Repair before durability becomes a combat problem
Durability affects the real cost of a weapon. A high-durability legendary Assault Rifle can be convenient over many trips, while a lower-tier weapon that repeatedly breaks may consume more repair materials and downtime. Repair before a boss run and bring a backup weapon when the expedition is long.
Common mistakes and fixes
“The highest attack value must be the best weapon.”
Attack is not a universal DPS measurement. The Rocket Launcher’s listed 14,000 legendary attack reflects explosive impact, not its rate of fire, reload time or ammunition cost. If you need continuous damage against moving targets, an Assault Rifle or later automatic weapon can be more practical.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“A shotgun should work at rifle distance.”
Move closer, wait for a safe opening and fire into a large hitbox. If the arena does not let you close distance safely, switch to a rifle, bow or launcher rather than forcing the shotgun to do a job it was not designed for.
“A legendary schematic is required immediately.”
It is not. The Old Bow, Crossbow and base firearms can carry progression while you accumulate materials and learn the schematic routes. Farm legendary sources when the time and resource cost make sense for your character, not because a rarity label replaces combat fundamentals.
“The 1.0-era list is permanent.”
It is not. The Mechanical Bow, Heavy Assault Rifle, Plasma Rifle and Beam Launcher are identified as newer choices in a September 5, 2026 progression guide, but balance and availability can change. Read the current weapon sheet and recipe in your game before rebuilding your entire loadout.
Bottom line
Use the Old Bow and Crossbow to reach firearms without exhausting your resources. Make the Assault Rifle your default sustained-fire weapon, select the Pump-Action Shotgun for close-range burst, and reserve the Rocket Launcher for expensive, high-impact explosive attacks. In the later 1.0-era tier, choose between the Mechanical Bow, Heavy Assault Rifle, Plasma Rifle and Beam Launcher according to your accuracy, range and ammunition economy. The best Palworld weapon is the one that matches the encounter you can actually supply and use—not the one with the biggest number on a static list.
