Choose Batocera if you want a dedicated retro-gaming interface and a ready-made image for supported hardware. Choose a Raspberry Pi setup if you want to select your operating system and build a more flexible system around your needs. They are not competing hardware choices: Batocera is software, and it can run on a Raspberry Pi.
What is the difference between Batocera and Raspberry Pi?
Batocera is an operating system distribution designed for retro gaming. Raspberry Pi is a family of small computers. A Pi needs an operating system, and Batocera is one option: its downloads page lists images for Raspberry Pi 4 B and Raspberry Pi 5 B. Raspberry Pi OS, by contrast, is the manufacturer’s general-purpose operating system. Batocera’s downloads page and Raspberry Pi OS downloads show the distinction.

So the practical choice is not simply “Batocera or Pi.” You can use Batocera on a Pi, or use a different operating system and gaming setup on that hardware.

Which setup suits you?
| Choose this direction | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Batocera on supported hardware | You want the machine to boot into a gaming-focused interface rather than start as a general-purpose computer. | Confirm that Batocera currently provides an image for your exact board, then check the status and compatibility for the systems you want to emulate. |
| Raspberry Pi with an OS you choose | You want flexibility to pick an operating system and assemble a setup suited to your use. | Choose the operating system and gaming software, and make sure your board, power supply, boot media, display, and controller meet their requirements. |
| Batocera on a Raspberry Pi | You want Pi hardware with Batocera’s dedicated gaming environment. | Check the image and release-specific notes for your Pi model. Batocera lists Pi 5 images, while its board guidance describes Pi 5 support as beta. |
Check board support and emulator compatibility
Match the image to the exact Pi model
Batocera lists downloads for Raspberry Pi 4 B and Raspberry Pi 5 B, but the project’s single-board-computer guidance describes Pi 5 support as beta. The download listing and support maturity are separate facts: before installing or buying a board for this purpose, check the current download and board guidance, along with notes for the release you plan to use.

Raspberry Pi’s own article, “Mighty projects for your 1GB Raspberry Pi 5,” says: “The choice of OS is up to you: Recalbox, Lakka, and Batocera should all work fine — as does RetroPie, though you’ll need to install it manually in Raspberry Pi OS as there’s no ready-made OS image for Raspberry Pi 5.” That is Raspberry Pi’s description in that article, not a guarantee for every release or game. Read Raspberry Pi’s article.
Check the games and systems you actually want
Compatibility depends on both the emulated system and the hardware running Batocera. Its compatibility matrix separates modern x86-64 PCs, Pi 5, and Pi 4. Look up the relevant system under the column for your hardware instead of assuming that a game or console that works on one platform will work equally well on another. The available evidence does not establish a universal performance winner between a Pi and other setups.

What you need to get started
For a Raspberry Pi build, plan on a board, a boot device with an operating system image, and a suitable power supply. Raspberry Pi says microSD cards are commonly used as boot devices. For Pi 5, it recommends a 27W USB-C supply; using a 5V/3A supply limits power available to downstream peripherals to 600mA. Check the getting-started documentation and power and image guidance for current requirements.
Accessories depend on how you plan to play and which software you install. Raspberry Pi’s RetroPie tutorial lists a board, suitable power supply, microSD card, display connection, monitor, USB flash drive, USB controller, and another computer for initial setup. That is the supply list for its documented RetroPie setup, not a universal minimum for every Batocera installation. See the RetroPie tutorial.

For Batocera installation, follow its installation guide and use the image intended for your hardware. A board, power supply, boot media, display, and controller may be needed depending on your setup; the exact shopping list is not the same for every device.
Games, ROMs, and BIOS files
Batocera says it includes a selection of free games that can legally be distributed and makes additional free games available through its Content Downloader. It does not include copyrighted BIOS files; users must supply their own. That does not mean commercial game ROMs or BIOS files are bundled with the system. Before copying or downloading game and firmware files, make sure you are entitled to use them under the rules that apply to you. Batocera explains its file handling in its games and BIOS guide.

Cost and performance: what can—and cannot—be compared
There is no single total-cost figure that applies to every build. The hardware and accessories you need depend on the Pi model or other device, power supply, boot media, controller, display, and software path you choose. Compare the parts required for your own setup rather than treating the operating system choice as the full cost.
