Base UI and a shadcn/ui-Style Layer: How to Structure Them for Production

Base UI supplies unstyled React behavior; shadcn/ui or your own wrapper layer can provide the design system. Here’s how to structure and maintain the combination in production.

Use Base UI as the unstyled React foundation and put your application’s visual system and reusable component API in a layer above it. You can build that layer yourself or use shadcn/ui’s tooling and components with Base UI; the right choice depends on how much of the component API and design system your team wants to own.

What each layer does

Base UI provides unstyled React components and interaction behavior. Its components do not bundle CSS, leaving presentation to your application. A shadcn/ui-style layer can add design tokens, visual styles, reusable wrappers, and higher-level APIs suited to your product.

“Shadcn/ui-style” can mean using shadcn/ui’s own tooling and components, or building a locally owned layer with a similar approach. The official documentation supports using Base UI with shadcn/ui and customizing component code; that does not make every independently built layer equivalent to shadcn/ui.

Choose between shadcn/ui and a custom layer

Decision point shadcn/ui workflow Custom wrapper layer
Starting point Use shadcn/ui’s project creation or existing-project instructions, which depend on the framework. Its Next.js guide includes a Base configuration path. shadcn/ui installation overview and Next.js guide. Install Base UI through a package manager and create the wrappers, styling conventions, and APIs your product needs. See Base UI quick start.
Ownership Customize component code to fit the application while starting from shadcn/ui’s workflow and components. Your team defines and maintains the entire visual system and wrapper API.
Design and styling Adapt the components and conventions to your tokens and product. Choose the token model and styling approach directly; Base UI supports classes, state attributes, CSS variables, and style props.
Framework fit Follow the guide for the target framework; do not assume the same generated command applies everywhere. Confirm the Base UI setup and your own project conventions work in the target framework.
Maintenance Review customized components as Base UI and shadcn/ui guidance evolve. Maintain wrappers, accessibility details, portal behavior, CSP compatibility, and upgrades yourself.

The official documentation does not establish that either option is universally faster or cheaper. Decide based on the abstraction you want, repository setup, token integration, and the maintenance work your team can support.

Set up the layer deliberately

  1. Follow the setup guide for your framework. Base UI’s quick start installs @base-ui/react with a package manager. For shadcn/ui, use the current project creation or existing-project instructions; its Next.js guide documents a Base selection and generated commands may include --base. Do not copy a command from one framework guide into another without checking it.
  2. Decide what wrappers promise. Choose which parts of Base UI remain directly accessible and which details your layer standardizes—for example, component naming, default variants, design tokens, and styling conventions. Keep the API useful to product code without hiding behavior or component parts that teams need.
  3. Standardize styling hooks rather than assuming a CSS framework. Base UI documents compatibility with Tailwind, CSS Modules, CSS-in-JS, and other styling solutions. Its styling hooks include className, state-based data attributes, CSS variables, and style props. Choose the hooks that fit your codebase and apply them consistently in wrappers. See the Base UI styling handbook.
  4. Review accessibility in the composed component. Base UI documents ARIA support, keyboard navigation, and focus management. Your application still needs appropriate accessible names, visible focus indicators, and sufficient foreground/background contrast. Check the finished experience, not only the primitive. See Base UI accessibility documentation.
  5. Test overlays in the actual app layout. Base UI recommends an isolation stacking context for the app root so portaled UI can sit above page content without page-level z-index conflicts. Test dialogs, menus, and other portaled components alongside your app’s stacking contexts and scroll behavior.
  6. Check mobile Safari backdrop behavior. Base UI’s quick start gives an iOS 26+ Safari adjustment: position backdrops absolutely and set body { position: relative; } so a backdrop can cover the visual viewport after scrolling. Verify it on the browsers and layouts your application supports. See the quick start guidance.
  7. Review restrictive content security policies. Some components may render inline style or script elements. Base UI documents passing a request-specific nonce with CSPProvider and disabling certain inline style elements. The provider does not cover style attributes, so inspect server-rendered markup and affected components if your policy restricts style-src-attr. See Base UI’s CSP guide.
  8. Pin stable versions and inspect release notes before upgrading. Treat canary releases differently from stable releases; Base UI warns that canaries may contain breaking changes. Record the version you ship and review changes relevant to your components when planning updates.

Version status to verify before shipping

On September 4, 2026, Base UI’s official release page listed v1.8.0 as the latest release, with notes including accessibility, focus, and interaction fixes. That is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of the latest version when you install. Check the Base UI releases page for current stable and canary status.
