Use both. Transaction alerts can flag selected activity soon after it happens; statements and transaction histories let you review a wider range of transactions and catch entries you missed. An alert is a prompt to check your account—not a guarantee that every suspicious transaction will be flagged. Review activity regularly, and contact your bank promptly about anything unfamiliar.
What alerts and statements can—and can’t—catch
| What you need | Transaction alerts | Statements and transaction history |
|---|---|---|
| When you see activity | A notification can arrive when an enabled alert’s trigger occurs. Available alert types, settings and delivery channels vary. | A periodic statement is retrospective. Online transaction history may be available to check more often. |
| What you may see | Only the events covered by your settings or required by applicable rules. No alert does not prove that all transactions are legitimate. | A broader list of posted transactions to review, provided you examine it. |
| Best use | Notice selected activity and respond quickly. | Reconcile activity, identify unfamiliar merchants or small debits, and keep a record if you need to dispute a transaction. |
| Main limitation | An alert service may not cover every transaction, and delivery depends on the bank’s settings and channels. | A statement may arrive after a transaction; reviewing it later does not stop further activity. |
This is a practical comparison, not the result of a direct test showing that one method detects more fraud. In a 2015 study, the UK Financial Conduct Authority examined overdraft behaviour associated with text alerts and mobile banking apps—not fraud discovery. Its summary reported reductions in unarranged overdraft charges, including a 24% reduction associated with signing up to both services. Those results do not show that alerts catch a particular share of unauthorized transactions. Read the FCA study summary.

Why alerts are not a substitute for reviewing transactions
An alert tells you that a selected event occurred; it does not tell you that unalerted activity is safe. Alert coverage depends on what your bank offers, what you enable and, in some cases, rules that require notices only for specific events. For example, Canada’s federal framework requires banks to send certain low-balance or low-available-credit alerts without delay. The default threshold is $100, and customers may change it. That requirement is not an alert for every transaction. See the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s framework.

A practical routine for spotting problems
- Enable useful alerts. Use your bank’s official app or account settings to turn on relevant transaction and balance notifications. Check which events or thresholds actually trigger each alert.
- Keep your contact details current. Make sure the bank can reach you through the channels you use. A legitimate notification should not require you to disclose your password, PIN or one-time security code.
- Review recent activity regularly. Open your transaction history and each statement, including paper statements if that is what you receive. Compare entries with receipts and your own records.
- Look for details that are easy to miss. Check unfamiliar merchant names or locations, small test debits, duplicate-looking entries and payments that do not match your records.
- Contact the bank promptly if something is unfamiliar. Use a number in the official app, on your card or on a statement. Follow the bank’s dispute instructions and ask whether a compromised card or other payment instrument should be blocked or replaced. The CFPB advises immediate contact and recommends cancellation and replacement when a debit card was compromised. See the CFPB’s unauthorized-transaction guidance.
- Keep a record. Note the transaction date, amount and merchant description, along with contact dates, case numbers and copies of written follow-up.
How quickly should you report an unauthorized transaction?
Report it immediately, then check the rules that apply to your country, account and transaction type. The examples below are not interchangeable legal advice; different situations within each jurisdiction can have different requirements.
United States
For certain unauthorized electronic withdrawals, CFPB guidance says that if the card, PIN or security code was not lost or stolen, notify the bank right away and no later than 60 days after it sent the statement showing the withdrawal. Lost-card or lost-PIN cases have different notice rules, including a two-business-day provision relevant to liability. After notification, the bank generally has 10 business days to investigate, or 20 business days for an account open less than 30 days; provisional-credit and final-resolution rules and exceptions also apply. Check the CFPB guidance for the rules and exceptions.

- WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
- HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
- DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
- IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
- SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.
Canada
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says deposit-account disputes are usually due within 30 days after the statement date, but an institution’s rules can differ. It advises notifying the institution immediately and continuing to monitor the account. Read its guidance on resolving an unauthorized transaction.

Reserve Bank of India directions call for SMS alerts for electronic banking transactions and reporting as soon as possible. For certain third-party breaches, the directions describe zero customer liability if reported within three working days of receiving the bank’s communication, capped liability for reports made within four to seven working days, and treatment under the bank’s policy after seven working days. Should you check your statement if you already get alerts?
Yes. Alerts help bring selected events to your attention; reviewing statements and transaction history helps you check a broader set of activity and preserve a record. The FCA’s findings on alerts and app use concern overdraft behaviour, not a head-to-head test of fraud detection. Its summary describes the value of getting information automatically and being able to act quickly, but neither that study nor the existence of alerts establishes that every suspicious transaction will trigger a notification.
