Start with Grid and Level for easier framing, then decide which settings should persist, choose video resolution and frame rate for your delivery needs, and review low-light and color controls. There is no universal creator preset: available options depend on your iPhone model and iOS version, so use the controls shown on your device.
1. Turn on Grid and Level for framing
Grid and Level are useful starting points if you want help keeping horizons straight and composing shots consistently. Apple describes them as aids for straightening and composing photos and videos. Open Settings > Camera and enable the options if they appear on your iPhone. Their value is practical rather than a change in image quality: use them when their guides help, and turn them off if they distract you.
2. Stop the camera from forgetting settings you use
By default, some camera choices may reset when you leave the Camera app. In Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings, enable the switches for controls you want to keep between sessions. Depending on the device and iOS version, these can include Camera Mode, exposure adjustment, Macro Control, Action mode, and ProRAW or resolution controls. Select only the items you regularly use; preserving a mode you do not want next time can be just as inconvenient as having it reset.
3. Choose video resolution and frame rate for the final use
Set resolution and frame rate according to where the video will be viewed, how much motion it contains, and how much storage and editing capacity you have. Apple Support documents model-dependent HD and 4K options and frame rates that may include 24, 25, 30, 60, or 120 fps. Not every iPhone supports every combination. Apple’s guidance is direct: “Faster frame rates and higher resolutions result in larger video files.” See Apple Support’s guide to recording video with iPhone for the options and availability relevant to your model.

- Use a delivery-first choice: Match the settings to the platform or editing project you are actually making rather than defaulting to the largest number available.
- Consider motion: Higher frame rates can be useful for smoother motion or slow-motion work, but increase file size; make sure your workflow supports the rate you choose.
- Balance detail against storage: 4K can suit projects that need the extra resolution, while HD may be sufficient when the destination does not call for 4K.
4. Review Auto FPS, HDR, and white balance for video
Auto FPS in changing or dim light
Auto FPS can change frame rate to help with low-light recording. Apple says iPhone can reduce the frame rate to 24 fps in low light when this feature is enabled. If consistent motion cadence matters more to your project than that low-light adjustment, review the Auto FPS option under Settings > Camera > Record Video and check what choices your device offers.
HDR Video for the destination
HDR Video can be useful when the intended display and editing workflow support HDR. If the video needs to look consistent across a range of destinations or tools, check that they handle HDR as expected before making it your default. The available control and formats vary by model.

Lock White Balance for consistent color
When filming a scene where color consistency matters, consider enabling Lock White Balance in the video-recording settings if your iPhone offers it. This is a workflow choice for steadier color across a recording, not a universal improvement for every clip.
5. Make photo resolution and processing choices deliberately
On supported iPhones, review the default Photo Mode resolution and the Resolution Control option under Settings > Camera. A higher-resolution capture can be useful when a project calls for it, but it is not automatically the right default for every photo. Controls and available resolutions differ by model.

- Faster Shooting: This prioritizes capturing photos more rapidly by changing image processing. It can suit action or fleeting moments; choose it based on whether capture speed or processing is more important to your work.
- Lens Correction: This adjusts front-camera and Ultra Wide photos for more natural-looking results. It is a rendering preference, so compare the look with it on and off if your composition depends on the lens’s uncorrected appearance.
6. Use Action mode and ProRes only when the job calls for them
Action mode for stabilization
Action mode is worth considering when reducing camera shake is a priority, provided your iPhone supports it. Because it is a specific capture mode rather than a universal default, enable or preserve it for the situations where its stabilization is useful.
ProRes for a post-production workflow
ProRes is an intentional production choice: Apple describes it as offering higher color fidelity and less compression, while requiring more storage. It is unavailable in Cinematic, Time-lapse, and Slo-Mo modes. Use it when your editing workflow benefits from the format and you can accommodate the larger files; it is not a general-purpose setting to turn on without considering storage and delivery.

7. Stabilize time-lapse shots when needed
For time-lapse, a stable surface or tripod can help prevent unwanted movement. Apple also suggests a tripod for more detailed, brighter low-light time-lapse on iPhone 12 or later. This is an optional capture aid, not a prerequisite for changing camera settings.
