Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse your bank’s CSV or spreadsheet export when it includes the transactions and details you need. It already provides structured rows, so you can import it into Excel or Google Sheets without rebuilding a table from a document. Convert a PDF statement only when a useful export is unavailable or leaves out information you need—and check the converted rows against the original.
Where to look for a bank export
Sign in to your bank’s website or app and check both the transaction-history area and the statement or download menu. Look for a format selector, a date-range control, or an option to export or download transactions. Banks place these controls in different locations, and available formats can depend on the account, device, and history period.

Before downloading, confirm that you have selected the right account and date range, and that the available columns suit your task. For bookkeeping or reconciliation, you may need dates, descriptions, amounts, and a running balance; another task may require different details.
- Credicorp’s help centre recommends a data export when one is offered and advises checking exported lines against the bank feed. If CSV is unavailable, it describes copying the date, description, amount, and running balance from a PDF as a fallback: Credicorp Help Centre.
- AU Small Finance Bank’s business-app instructions describe filtering by month or custom date and by transaction type or amount, then downloading Excel, CSV, or PDF. Those instructions apply to that bank’s business app, not to every AU account or bank: AU Small Finance Bank business banking.
- U.S. Bank says its full website—not its mobile app—offers transaction-history downloads in CSV, QFX, or QBO for up to 18 months. Its page says older transactions are available on statements: U.S. Bank account activity.
- NAB Connect offers CSV for simple history and CSV, PDF, or QIF for its advanced filtered report. NAB warns that extra fast-payment and international-transfer information is not included in CSV exports: NAB Connect reports.
- Santander describes access to up to 25 months of statement copies through online banking, with PDF or text viewing or download. This is an example of statement access, not evidence of a general CSV export: Santander statements.
How the two workflows compare
| Consideration | Bank CSV or spreadsheet export | PDF-to-spreadsheet conversion |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | The bank offers a structured download covering the account activity and fields you need. | No suitable export is available, or the PDF contains information missing from the export. |
| Work involved | Download the file, then inspect its columns and how your spreadsheet imports them. | Extract or OCR the document, review uncertain rows, correct errors, and reconcile the results against the statement. |
| Completeness | May omit details shown elsewhere; check it against your task. NAB specifically documents omitted fast-payment and international-transfer information in CSV exports. | Depends on the legibility of the statement and how the converter reads its layout. Keep the original PDF for comparison. |
| Scanned statements | Not an issue if the bank provides structured transaction data. | May require optical character recognition (OCR). Poor-quality scans can be harder to read. |
| Privacy | You download the data from the bank to your device and the destination you choose. | Processing varies: some services describe local parsing, cloud OCR, or server-side OCR. Check the current processing and retention terms before uploading. |
| Access and limits | History periods, eligible accounts, formats, and desktop or mobile support vary by bank. | Supported statement layouts, page limits, pricing, and data retention can vary by service. |
When PDF conversion is the better fallback
Conversion is useful when the bank does not offer an export for the account or period you need, or when the PDF contains transaction details missing from the downloadable file. A converter tries to turn the statement’s printed or encoded transaction table into rows. If a page is image-only, it may use OCR to recognize text in the image.

Results depend on the statement’s layout and readability as well as the converter’s parsing. OCR can mistake a digit, date, sign, or description; a correctly extracted table can still contain a missed or misaligned row. Treat a preview as a way to find possible problems, not as proof that every entry is right.
Check converted rows against the statement
- Review the preview. Examine rows the tool flags as uncertain and check that each transaction appears in the right columns.
- Check dates, signs, and amounts. Look for shifted dates, missing minus signs, and amounts assigned to the wrong transaction.
- Compare the transactions. Match the converted rows with the PDF, including the row count and the individual amounts.
- Reconcile balances. Where the statement provides an opening balance, closing balance, or running balances, check that the converted figures agree.
- Keep the original PDF. Retain it as the reference for any correction or later review.
Consider privacy before uploading a statement
A bank statement can expose personal or business financial information. Converter processing is not uniform: Banking Converter says it uses server-side OCR for image-only pages and flags rows built from doubtful words for review; StatementSheet describes parsing in the local browser and on-device OCR, with cloud OCR for unreadable pages only after an explicit user prompt. These are the services’ own descriptions, not independent security assessments, and their workflows may change. See Banking Converter and StatementSheet, and review a service’s current processing and retention terms before sending it a statement.
