Official U.S. consumer guidance documents phishing, stolen credentials, account-access attempts, and unauthorized transactions—but it does not establish that banks’ cybersecurity is failing across the board. You can reduce risk by securing your sign-in and recovery accounts, treating urgent messages with caution, and reporting suspicious activity to your bank promptly.
Secure the accounts that can open or recover your bank account
A password can be exposed through phishing, reused credentials, or guessing. Use a unique, strong password for online banking and for the email account used to recover it. A password manager can help you create and keep track of distinct passwords. The FDIC recommends unique strong passwords and enabling multifactor authentication (MFA) where available. Turn on MFA in your bank’s security settings, then enable it for your recovery email and other important payment accounts. MFA asks for more than a password, using factors such as something you know (a password or PIN), something you have (a code, authenticator app, or security key), or something you are (such as a biometric). The bank determines which methods it supports. FTC: How To Protect Your Online Accounts
If your bank offers a passkey, consider using it. An authenticator app or physical security key may avoid some weaknesses of text-message codes, but availability and recovery options vary. The FTC calls security keys the strongest MFA method among those it describes; that is a comparison of MFA methods, not a guarantee that an account cannot be compromised. Before choosing a key, check that your bank supports its standard and understand how you will regain access if the key is lost. FTC account-security guidance

Keep the device you bank from up to date
Install operating-system and application updates, including updates for your browser and banking app. The FDIC also recommends preventative software such as antivirus, firewalls, and email filters. These measures help protect the device and reduce exposure to malicious software or messages; they do not replace MFA or careful handling of unexpected contact. FDIC cybersecurity guidance
Got a call about fraud activity on your bank account?
An unexpected call, email, or text may impersonate your bank and pressure you to act quickly, click a link, or confirm account details. Don’t use a link or phone number in the message to investigate. Instead, open the bank’s official website yourself, use its app, or call the number on your bank statement or card. The FTC recommends independently contacting the real bank rather than trusting the caller’s contact details. FTC: “Got a call about fraud activity on your bank account? It could be a scammer.”

The FTC’s advice is unambiguous: “Never move or transfer your money to ‘protect it.’” It also says: “Never share a verification code. Ever.” A legitimate bank will not need you to transfer funds to a supposed safe account or disclose a one-time code to a caller. FTC consumer alert
Do not click unexpected links or attachments, even if a message uses the bank’s name or logo. The FTC reported in an April 2025 phishing alert that email was the top method scammers used to contact people in 2024; the alert gives no count or percentage for that statement. How to respond to an unfamiliar transaction
Review recent bank and card activity, including small or unfamiliar transactions. If you suspect an unauthorized debit or charge, alert the bank or card provider immediately. Ask whether the affected card or account should be canceled or replaced, and follow the provider’s instructions. CFPB guidance on a charge you didn’t make
How do I get my money back after I discover an unauthorized transaction or money missing from my bank account? Contact your bank promptly and report what you found. The outcome and any protections depend on the transaction type and the facts, including when you notify the institution. Do not assume a refund is guaranteed. The CFPB’s answer on unauthorized electronic fund transfers, last reviewed August 28, 2026, says that after notification an institution generally has 10 business days to investigate; after determining an error occurred, it must correct it within one business day and report its findings within three business days. The page describes electronic fund transfers as including ATM transactions, debit-card purchases, some online bill payments, and automatic deductions. Use a security key only if it fits your bank’s setup
A FIDO-compatible hardware security key is an optional MFA method, not a universal solution. Check the bank’s supported sign-in methods and account-recovery process before buying or setting up one. When comparing supported options, consider whether they resist phishing, whether they depend on a phone or network connection, how you can recover access if a device is lost, and how easily you can use the method with both banking and email accounts. The best practical choice is one your bank supports and you can recover safely.
