The Bambu Lab R1 is a standalone 55 W CO₂ laser cutter and engraver with a 600 × 300 mm work area. Tom’s Hardware reviewer Denise Bertacchi found setup and positioning straightforward and reported successful cuts and engravings in several materials. The trade-offs are practical: loud cooling fans, a limited preset list at review time, and a tedious manual lens change for thicker stock. Most importantly, adding the Riser Base or Conveyor changes the machine from its fully enclosed Class 1 configuration to Class 4, according to Bambu Lab.
What the Bambu Lab R1 is
The R1 is a standalone CO₂ laser machine, rather than a laser add-on for another tool. Bambu Lab lists its laser power as 55 W and its standard work area as 600 × 300 mm. The machine measures 940 × 560 × 200 mm and weighs 33.5 kg (73.8 lb), according to Tom’s Hardware’s review. Those dimensions and weight matter when planning a permanent workbench location.

The R1 has a bird’s-eye camera for positioning, a toolhead camera and distance-measuring laser, XY encoders, automated mirror alignment, air assist, and Wi-Fi and USB connectivity. It uses Bambu Suite software. Bertacchi reported that positioning worked out of the box and found the software easy to use, though the material preset list was limited at the time of her review. Materials and cutting capacity
Bambu Lab says the R1 cuts wood, acrylic, leather, paper, and fabric, and engraves glass, stone, and coated metals. Tom’s Hardware also lists EVA foam among its cutting materials and ceramic among engravable materials. These are stated material categories, not a guarantee that every formulation, color, thickness, or finish will work the same way.

Bambu Lab claims the R1 can cut up to 18 mm black walnut plywood and 20 mm acrylic. Those are manufacturer maximum-capability claims, not results established for every material or operating setup. In the tests described in her review, Bertacchi reported good cuts in 3 mm basswood and clear acrylic, plus cuts in sticker paper and PETG. She also described engraving glass and coated metal. These are the reviewer’s results with particular materials and settings, not universal settings or independent testing of every listed material.
Work area and optional accessories
The standard work area is 600 × 300 mm. Bambu Lab says the separately sold Conveyor enables processing material up to 3,000 mm long; Tom’s Hardware describes the conveyor configuration as 600 × 3,000 mm. The added length is useful for longer workpieces, but it is not the standard enclosed configuration and carries a major safety change described below.

Bambu Lab lists the Riser Base, Conveyor, Rotary attachment, medium- and long-focus lenses, Vision Encoder, E1 Pro air purifier, and Auto Fire Extinguishing system as separately sold. The short-focus lens is included. The review’s lens-change finding makes the included-versus-optional distinction relevant if thicker-stock work is part of your plan.
Setup, software, and day-to-day drawbacks
Setup and positioning
Bertacchi reported that her R1 arrived assembled and required a short setup, including automated mirror calibration. She found positioning worked out of the box. These are findings from her hands-on review, not a claim that every unit or workspace will require identical setup.
Material presets and lens changes
The review found few material presets in Bambu Suite at the time. That can mean more work to find and validate suitable settings for materials not covered by a preset. The review does not establish whether a later software version has expanded the list.

For thicker material, the reviewer had to remove and replace small screws to change the focus lens, then run a vision-accuracy calibration. She described the process as tedious. This is a real workflow consideration if you expect to switch frequently between thin and thick stock.

The review reported loud cooling fans. It did not provide a measured decibel level, so the finding is qualitative rather than a quantified noise comparison.
Laser safety changes with the configuration
Bambu Lab describes the fully enclosed standard R1 as Class 1 under IEC 60825-1. It also states that installing the Riser Base or Conveyor leaves the enclosure incomplete and changes the machine to Class 4. The company says this extended configuration requires CO₂ laser-safety goggles and is intended for trained professional use. Tom’s Hardware also notes this Class 4 and eyewear caveat. Do not treat Conveyor or Riser Base operation as having the same classification as the standard enclosed machine.

Bambu Lab’s broader laser-module terms advise using a correctly installed exhaust system in a well-ventilated area, avoiding unknown or hazardous materials such as PVC, maintaining fire precautions, and never leaving laser operation unattended. These are general manufacturer laser-safety instructions, not a substitute for the current R1-specific manual and operating guidance. Who the R1 makes sense for
The R1 is most compelling for a maker or small workshop that wants a dedicated CO₂ cutter and engraver, values camera-assisted positioning and integrated software, and will mainly work within the standard 600 × 300 mm area. Its accessory ecosystem expands the possible workflows, but the Conveyor and Riser Base alter the safety classification, and longer-focus lenses add both cost and a manual change process.
Before choosing it, weigh the kinds and thicknesses of materials you intend to process, whether you need the Conveyor’s longer workpiece capacity, the cost of optional lenses and accessories, the space and exhaust setup available, and whether the fan noise and Class 4 requirements fit your working environment. The review supports a positive view of setup and selected material results, but not a complete head-to-head comparison against competing machines.
