Baird’s rule predicts a reversal in aromaticity patterns for certain cyclic molecules in their lowest triplet excited state: systems with 4n π electrons can be aromatic, where the familiar ground-state Hückel pattern favors 4n+2. In 2020, Dandan Chen, Dariusz W. Szczepanik, Jun Zhu, and Miquel Solà reported that this framework can also apply to all-metal systems with σ- and π-aromaticity. Their result was theoretical and computational—not experimental proof that all-metal clusters, or metal clusters generally, are aromatic.
What Baird’s rule says
Aromaticity describes unusual stabilization and related electronic behavior in some cyclic, conjugated systems. In the familiar Hückel picture for singlet ground states, a cyclic system with 4n+2 π electrons is associated with aromaticity, while a 4n π-electron system is generally associated with antiaromaticity.

Baird’s rule concerns the lowest-lying triplet state, an excited electronic state. For relevant cyclic conjugated systems, it reverses that electron-count pattern: 4n π electrons are associated with aromatic character in the triplet, while the 4n+2 pattern is associated with antiaromatic character. This is a rule for interpreting particular electronic structures, not a blanket classification based on counting electrons alone.

In “All-metal Baird aromaticity,” published in Chemical Communications in 2020, Chen, Szczepanik, Zhu, and Solà applied the idea to all-metal systems. The authors state in their abstract: “In this study, we demonstrate that Baird’s rule can also be extended to all-metal systems with σ- and π-aromaticity.” The point is that excited-state aromaticity rules need not be limited to the familiar organic π-electron framework; metal systems can involve σ as well as π orbitals.

What the examples establish—and what they do not
Chemistry World reports that the team used density functional theory calculations and discusses calculated triplet species ³Be₂B₆ and ³Be₂B₇⁻ as examples consistent with the rule. These are computationally analyzed examples, not experimentally observed demonstrations of all-metal Baird aromaticity. The 2020 claim is therefore best understood as a theoretical extension supported by calculations, rather than a claim that experiments have established the effect in those clusters.

How this differs from earlier all-metal aromaticity
All-metal aromaticity was already an experimental and theoretical research topic before the Baird extension. In a 2001 Science paper, Li and colleagues reported evidence for MAl₄⁻ clusters, with M = Li, Na, or Cu. Photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations supported a structure in which an M⁺ cation interacts with a square-planar Al₄²⁻ unit. The Al₄²⁻ unit was described as having two delocalized π electrons and following the 4n+2 count.
That work concerns ground-state all-metal aromaticity; it is not evidence for Baird aromaticity in a lowest triplet state. The distinction matters: sharing the broad idea of aromaticity does not make the electronic state, orbital contribution, or evidence type the same. The original study’s abstract is indexed at PubMed.

Why aromaticity assignments in metal clusters need care
Aromaticity is not a single directly measured property with one universally decisive test. Metal clusters may show multiple, and sometimes conflicting, forms of aromaticity; they also lack a simple all-metal counterpart to benzene that could serve as a common reference. A recent review emphasizes combining indicators from different categories and interpreting electron-counting rules alongside electronic-structure analysis, rather than treating one count or descriptor as conclusive. See the 2025 Royal Society of Chemistry review.
When assessing a proposed all-metal Baird-aromatic system, keep four questions distinct:

- Which electrons and orbitals are involved? Identify whether the proposed aromaticity is σ, π, or involves other contributions; do not apply π-electron counting automatically to a σ framework.
- Which electronic state is being analyzed? Separate a singlet ground state from the lowest triplet state. Baird’s reversal applies to the relevant triplet-state analysis.
- What indicators support the assignment? Consider complementary magnetic, electronic, and structural evidence rather than relying on an electron count alone.
- Is the evidence experimental or computational? A calculated structure or property can support a theoretical interpretation, but it is not the same as an experimentally observed demonstration.
What to take away
The 2020 study extends Baird’s excited-state electron-counting framework to all-metal systems with σ- and π-aromaticity. Its significance is conceptual and computational: it shows how the rule can be applied beyond organic systems, while leaving the actual aromaticity of any particular cluster dependent on its orbitals, electronic state, and multiple lines of evidence. It should not be conflated with the earlier experimental and theoretical work on ground-state all-metal aromaticity.
