There is no objectively best-looking camera: whether a camera’s shape, finish and controls appeal is personal. But design can be more than decoration. Dedicated dials, a useful finder and a lens that suits your photography can make a camera more inviting and intuitive to use. Fujifilm’s X100VI makes that case with film-inspired controls and a hybrid viewfinder—alongside a fixed lens that will not suit every photographer.
When camera style becomes part of the experience
A retro silhouette alone does not make a camera a better choice. The useful question is whether its design changes how you shoot: can you adjust settings directly, compose comfortably, and carry a lens that fits the pictures you want to make? Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide uses a similar standard, weighing design that affects picture-taking alongside image quality, autofocus and video capability. That is an editorial buying framework, not evidence that one style produces better photographs.

Physical controls can make key settings easier to reach without navigating menus. A finder can support a different way of composing, and a fixed lens can simplify a camera while limiting framing options. Those are practical tradeoffs—not proof that a particular camera looks best or will improve your results.
Fujifilm X100VI: classic controls, one fixed focal length
The X100VI is a strong example of style and function meeting in one compact design. Fujifilm says its top-plate dials echo classic film cameras and provide access to shutter speed, aperture and ISO. Its hybrid finder lets you switch between an electronic viewfinder and an optical view that shows beyond the frame. Fujifilm’s product page describes the camera’s design and specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
The key compromise is the lens: the X100VI has a fixed 23mm f/2 lens, with a 35mm-format equivalent field of view of 35mm. That can be a useful everyday perspective, but you cannot swap lenses when you want a wider, tighter or otherwise different field of view. Decide whether that single perspective suits your photography before letting the camera’s appearance win you over.
Fujifilm lists a 40.2MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor and 20 Film Simulation modes, including REALA ACE. The Film Simulation modes are in-camera image-style options; they are not a substitute for choosing the right lens setup or camera system. Megapixels alone also do not establish overall image quality.

Nikon Z fc: an SLR-inspired look with lens choice
If you like the appearance of a classic SLR but want an interchangeable-lens mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z fc offers a different balance. Nikon describes it as a contemporary camera shaped by heritage cues, rather than a straightforward replica of a film body. Its APS-C sensor and Nikon Z DX mount give you the option to choose compatible lenses for different subjects and framing needs. See Nikon’s Z fc design account for the company’s design rationale.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA Nikon Z fc product designer explains the approach this way: “When we say we focused on the iconic cameras of the past, it is not simply about tracing the outer shapes of those cameras again. Bringing it back to a camera that fits today’s world is what’s important.” The quotation expresses Nikon’s design intent; it is not an independent assessment of the camera’s performance.

Compare the choices that affect your photography
| What to consider | Fujifilm X100VI | Nikon Z fc |
|---|---|---|
| Design approach | Film-camera-inspired top-plate controls, according to Fujifilm. | SLR-inspired heritage cues in a contemporary mirrorless design, according to Nikon. |
| Lens flexibility | Fixed 23mm f/2 lens; 35mm-format equivalent field of view of 35mm. | Interchangeable Nikon Z DX lens system. |
| Finder | Hybrid finder switches between optical and electronic viewing. | Not stated in the cited product and design sources. |
| Sensor details established here | 40.2MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, listed by Fujifilm. | APS-C sensor, listed in Digital Camera World’s 2026 comparison guide. |
The table reflects the cited sources, not a hands-on test or a complete specification comparison. It does not establish which camera has better autofocus, video, stabilization or overall image quality. Check current manufacturer specifications for those needs before choosing.
How to decide which design fits you
- Start with the pictures you make. Everyday photography with one familiar field of view can suit a fixed-lens camera. Portraits, distant subjects, varied travel scenes or changing creative needs may make interchangeable lenses more valuable.
- Choose controls you will actually use. If direct access to exposure settings appeals to you, look for dedicated dials and consider whether their layout makes sense for your shooting habits. A vintage appearance is not a substitute for comfortable operation.
- Think about how you compose. Decide whether an optical, electronic or hybrid finder fits your preferences, and check screen movement and viewing positions on the exact model you are considering. The sources cited here establish the X100VI’s hybrid finder but do not provide comparable screen details for both cameras.
- Consider the whole system. With an interchangeable-lens camera, evaluate the compatible lenses you are likely to want, as well as their cost and size. With a fixed-lens camera, make sure its built-in focal length works for the subjects you photograph most.
- Check capability beyond the styling. Compare autofocus, video, stabilization, sensor format and handling against your actual needs. A retro look and a high megapixel count cannot answer those questions on their own.
So, what is the best-looking camera?
That depends on what you find appealing—and what makes you want to take pictures. The X100VI is a compelling choice if you like film-inspired dials, a hybrid finder and the simplicity of a fixed 35mm-equivalent view. The Z fc is worth considering if you prefer an SLR-inspired shape but want interchangeable lenses. Neither design is a universal winner; the better fit is the one whose controls, finder and lens options match the way you shoot.
