Upgrading safely requires Catalog code changes, a registered workspace-serialization provider, and an idempotency review for every Scaffolder action if recovery is enabled.
What changed in Backstage 1.55
The release combines two significant upgrade areas: a breaking cleanup in the Catalog backend and a new recovery model for Scaffolder workers. Recovery is disabled unless you configure it, and the old experimental recovery settings remain available as fallbacks during migration.

Catalog APIs and configuration removed
Relations now use targetRef
Backstage 1.55.0 removes catalog.enableRelationsCompatibility and its compatibility layer. Entity relations are returned in the standard format with a targetRef value. Integrations, processors or frontend code that still read the old target field must be updated to consume targetRef.
Deprecated processors moved out of core exports
The deprecated CodeOwnersProcessor and AnnotateScmSlugEntityProcessor exports are no longer available from the former locations. Replace them with the maintained community backend modules:

Install each module your catalog still needs and register it in the backend using the module’s current integration instructions. Leaving an old import in place will cause the backend build or startup to fail.
Stitching strategy setting removed
Delete the deprecated catalog.stitchingStrategy.mode configuration. Keeping obsolete compatibility keys in configuration can make an upgrade appear partially successful while the intended behavior is no longer being selected.

How Scaffolder task recovery works
The new scaffolder.taskRecovery configuration enables automatic recovery for tasks that crash or time out. A recovered task resumes from its last completed step rather than starting over. Completed step outputs are persisted, and task secrets are retained until the task reaches a terminal state so the recovery attempt can continue.
Recovery applies to every Scaffolder task once enabled. Actions therefore need to be safe when invoked again. Make external operations idempotent—for example, use an existing resource’s stable identifier instead of blindly creating a duplicate—or add checkpoints that let an action detect work already completed.

Configuration migration from experimental flags
The new section consolidates three earlier settings: EXPERIMENTAL_recoverTasks, EXPERIMENTAL_workspaceSerialization and EXPERIMENTAL_recoverTasksTimeout. Those flags remain supported as fallbacks, so an existing installation can continue operating while you move to the scaffolder.taskRecovery configuration. They do not, however, change the default: recovery remains off until explicitly configured.
Before switching it on, inventory custom actions that create repositories, tickets, cloud resources, database records or other externally visible effects. Verify that a retry can recognize an already completed operation, or store a checkpoint before proceeding to the next irreversible step.

Workspace serialization requires a provider
Task recovery depends on serialized workspaces. Backstage 1.55 requires a separately installed and registered workspace provider; merely adding a provider name to configuration is not enough. The Scaffolder rejects a configured provider that has not been installed and registered.

For development environments, Backstage documents @backstage/plugin-scaffolder-backend-module-workspace-database. It has a 50 MB workspace limit and is not recommended for production. On its first startup, it migrates existing database workspace snapshots from the legacy task storage.
Production option: external storage
Production deployments should use an external provider such as @backstage/plugin-scaffolder-backend-module-gcp, or another provider suited to your storage, retention and availability requirements. Install the module, register its backend provider, then reference that registered provider in the Scaffolder configuration before enabling recovery.
Other upgrade action: move Sentry configuration
If a custom action currently sets a Sentry apiBaseUrl, move that value to scaffolder.sentry.apiBaseUrl. Keeping the setting at the action level can leave error reporting misconfigured after the upgrade.
Worker reliability improvements
The 1.55 changelog also describes resilience fixes in the Scaffolder worker:

- Repeated database claim failures now back off instead of hammering the database.
- Unexpected execution errors are contained rather than taking down the worker loop.
- Graceful shutdown stops new task claims so in-flight work can finish cleanly.
- A transient task-pickup error is retried instead of silently halting task processing.
Previously, a pickup failure could leave new tasks queued with no visible error or failing health check until an operator restarted the worker. These changes reduce that failure mode, but normal queue, database and provider monitoring is still necessary.
