Backlight Bleed: What to Expect and How to Respond

Backlight bleed is usually a panel-related issue, not something that fades with time. Learn how to assess it in normal lighting and what to do if it disrupts everyday use.

Usually, no: backlight bleed is a physical light-uniformity issue, so you should not expect it to disappear on its own. Lowering screen brightness or increasing room light can make it less noticeable, but those steps do not repair the panel. If the bright areas are distracting during ordinary use, ask the seller or manufacturer to assess your specific display.

Why backlight bleed usually does not go away

LCD panels use multiple layers, and small alignment differences or pressure in the assembly can let more light through in particular areas. Intel’s support article for its X15 NUC laptop says, “Backlight bleeding cannot be completely eliminated.” That statement is specific to the product covered by Intel’s article; it is not a measured claim about every display. Acer also describes panel structure and alignment as contributing factors and says the effect cannot be eliminated completely.

Because the issue is associated with the panel or its assembly, there is no basis to count on time alone fixing it. Official support guidance recommends reducing its visibility, not waiting for it to resolve.

Check whether you are seeing IPS glow or backlight bleed

IPS glow and backlight bleed can look similar, especially on a dark screen, but they are not interchangeable terms. Lenovo’s guidance for specified Lenovo/Idea IPS systems describes IPS glow as angle-dependent: it may change or disappear when you look at the screen perpendicularly. Lenovo contrasts this with backlight bleed, which it says remains visible across viewing angles. That guidance is specific to the systems it covers and is not a universal acceptance rule for every monitor or laptop.

  • CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  • View the display from your normal seating position, then look straight at it. A glow that changes substantially with angle may be IPS glow.
  • Check whether the bright area remains visible across angles and during the content you normally use.
  • Do not judge the display solely from a full-black test image in a dark room; that setup can make light leakage look more prominent than it does in ordinary use.

How to make backlight bleed less noticeable

These steps can improve perceived comfort, but they do not remove a physical panel issue:

  • Reduce screen brightness. A less intense backlight can make bright patches less conspicuous.
  • Increase ambient light. A brighter room reduces the contrast between the screen’s dark areas and any light leakage.
  • Try a lighter background or theme. The issue is most apparent against very dark content, so a lighter interface may be less distracting.

How to assess the display fairly

Use ordinary room lighting and your usual viewing position, rather than relying on a photograph of a black screen taken in darkness. ASUS recommends assessing LCD light leakage in lighting of at least 150 lux. Treat that as ASUS’s assessment guidance, not as a universal industry standard. Check whether the bright area is visible in normal content and whether it interferes with your usual tasks.

When to contact the seller or manufacturer

If the bright area remains distracting during normal use, contact the seller or the display maker with the exact model, purchase details, and photos taken under ordinary viewing conditions. Ask whether the specific unit qualifies for service, exchange, or return. Coverage and return options depend on the product, location, seller policy, and warranty; the cited support guidance does not establish a universal threshold for replacement.

Decide based on how the screen behaves at your normal viewing angle, whether the issue appears in ordinary lighting and real content, how much it affects your use, and the applicable return window or warranty. Do not assume that pressing or massaging the panel, opening it, or modifying it will fix the issue; the cited official guidance does not recommend those methods.
