To strengthen backend security, map the data and trust boundaries your service exposes, enforce authorization at every non-public endpoint, protect credentials, limit privileges, and keep checking controls in development and at runtime. No single checklist or scanner can secure every backend: prioritize measures according to your service’s data, architecture, exposure, and likely threats.
Start by mapping what needs protection
Before choosing controls, identify the sensitive data your service handles, which components and users can access it, and where data crosses a trust boundary. Inventory public endpoints and privileged operations, then consider how an attacker might misuse them: accessing another user’s records, invoking an operation without permission, exploiting unsafe input, or taking advantage of a misconfigured service or dependency.

The OWASP Top 10: 2025 is a useful orientation for common web application risk areas. Its categories cover broken access control, security misconfiguration, software supply-chain failures, cryptographic failures, injection, insecure design, authentication failures, software or data integrity failures, security logging and alerting failures, and mishandling exceptional conditions. They are categories for awareness, not a statistical ranking of risks to your particular backend.

OWASP describes the Top 10 as primarily an awareness document. Use it to start a risk conversation, not as a complete test standard or proof that an application is secure. Its Application Security Verification Standard (ASVS) is a better fit when a team needs verifiable security requirements.

Protect every non-public endpoint
For REST services, OWASP’s REST Security Cheat Sheet says, “Secure REST services must only provide HTTPS endpoints.” HTTPS protects traffic in transit; it does not decide whether a caller is entitled to use an endpoint.
Authentication establishes who or what is calling. Authorization determines what that identity can do. Enforce access control on the server at every non-public endpoint, including endpoints that read, change, or delete data. Check permission for the requested action and the specific object, not just whether the caller has signed in. A user who may read their own record should not gain access to another user’s record by changing an identifier in a request.
Do not put passwords, tokens, or API keys in URLs. URLs can be captured in logs, making credentials harder to keep confidential. Use an appropriate authenticated request mechanism instead, and make authorization decisions independently of whether a request arrived over HTTPS.

Manage passwords, tokens, and secrets as credentials
Credentials need controls throughout their lifecycle: creation, storage, use, rotation, and revocation. OWASP’s Secrets Management Cheat Sheet emphasizes restricting access, auditing and alerting on relevant activity, and preventing plaintext secrets from entering logs.
- Passwords: Hash them on the server with a suitable password-hashing approach; do not store plaintext passwords. Where practical, use a well-tested authentication service rather than building credential handling from scratch.
- Application secrets and tokens: Keep them out of source code, URLs, and logs. Grant access only to the workloads and people that need each credential, and scope credentials to the permissions they require.
- Lifecycle and oversight: Rotate credentials when appropriate and revoke those that are no longer needed or may have been exposed. Audit access and configure alerts for activity that warrants investigation.
These practices reduce the chance that a leaked credential becomes durable access. The right rotation schedule and authentication policy depend on the service and its threat model; one universal policy is not established by the cited guidance.
Validate inputs and make data access safe
Treat data crossing a trust boundary as untrusted, even when it comes from another internal service. Validate it against the type and constraints the operation expects, and encode output for its destination context. Prefer parameterized queries so user-controlled values are treated as data rather than executable query syntax.

For file uploads, constrain the types your application accepts and inspect file content or headers instead of trusting a filename extension. An extension alone does not establish what a file contains. These are examples from OWASP’s Secure Coding Practices Checklist, an archived repository, rather than a substitute for current framework-specific guidance.
Limit the damage a compromised component can cause
Apply least privilege to database roles, application services, CI jobs, and access to secrets. A component should have only the permissions it needs for its work; broad shared credentials make it harder to contain a compromise.
Include configuration and dependency changes in your security review. Security misconfiguration and software supply-chain failures are both categories in the OWASP Top 10: 2025, so deployment settings and the software entering your build are part of the attack surface, not administrative details separate from security.

Fail safely and make suspicious activity visible
Give clients useful but generic error responses. Do not return stack traces, internal implementation details, or sensitive data that could help an attacker. Keep detailed diagnostic information in appropriately protected operational records instead.
Record security-relevant events and sanitize untrusted content before putting it into logs. Never log plaintext secrets. Logging is useful only when someone can review the signals and respond to alerts; it helps with detection and investigation, but it does not prevent every attack.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerify controls continuously, without treating tools as proof
Build security checks into development and deployment: review code, test security behavior, and use appropriate static analysis, dependency, secret, and infrastructure-as-code scanning. Match checks to your architecture and risks rather than assuming one tool covers them all.

OWASP cautions that tools cannot comprehensively detect or protect against every Top 10 risk. Automated checks can help find certain defects, but they cannot establish that a design is sound, that business rules are correctly enforced, or that operations will respond effectively. Use ASVS when you need a structured set of verifiable requirements, alongside tests and review suited to your service.
Prioritize protections by risk and lifecycle
Security work applies before deployment and while a service is running. NIST Special Publication 800-228, Guidelines for API Protection for Cloud-Native Systems (2025), recommends identifying API lifecycle risks and selecting basic or advanced protections with attention to implementation tradeoffs. It does not prescribe one universal stack for every API.
- Address exposure and impact first. Identify publicly reachable endpoints, sensitive data, and operations with elevated privileges.
- Close fundamental access gaps. Use HTTPS for REST endpoints, enforce authorization at each non-public endpoint, and prevent credentials from leaking through URLs or logs.
- Reduce credential and component privileges. Restrict, audit, rotate, and revoke secrets; narrow service and database permissions to what each component requires.
- Integrate verification and runtime visibility. Add tests and appropriate automated checks before release, then ensure security-relevant events can be reviewed and acted upon in production.
- Reassess as the service changes. New endpoints, dependencies, data flows, and deployment settings can change risk; revisit protections when the architecture or exposure changes.
This staged approach reflects NIST’s risk-based guidance: the appropriate protection level depends on the API’s risks and the tradeoffs involved in implementing controls.
