#1 Best Overall
Duolingo describes its courses as units built around communication goals, teaching vocabulary and grammar relevant to those goals. It also says redesigned major courses, including Spanish, align with CEFR goals and include speaking and listening lessons. These are Duolingo’s descriptions of its curriculum and features, not an independent comparison with Babbel. See how Duolingo says its courses work and its course update.
What should you compare before paying?
Calculate the full term and renewal cost
Babbel’s price varies with location, subscription duration, plan type, and purchase channel. The full renewal period is charged in advance, and subscriptions generally renew automatically unless cancelled; Babbel describes lifetime access as a one-time purchase. Check the live regional price and renewal period at Babbel’s pricing page and at checkout. Do not assume a price shown in another country, app store, or promotion applies to you.
Rank #2
Duolingo’s free access makes it possible to try the course without subscribing. If you consider Super or Max, compare the current local price and included features in the app or on Duolingo’s subscription page; features and availability can vary.
Match practice to your goals
- For a guided progression: Babbel’s structured course and explicit grammar guidance may suit learners who prefer a more lesson-led format.
- For low-cost habit building: Duolingo’s free access and gamified approach may suit learners who want to practice regularly without an initial subscription.
- For speaking and listening: Both describe relevant practice features, but their presence does not establish how much practice you personally need or which app develops those skills more effectively.
- For regional Spanish: Babbel explicitly lists Mexico and Spain varieties. If a particular dialect matters to you, verify the course’s current content before subscribing.
Can either app make you fluent?
Neither app’s feature descriptions establish that using it alone guarantees fluency or that it is universally more effective. Duolingo’s statement that its courses align with CEFR goals describes curriculum design, not a measured head-to-head outcome against Babbel. The sources cited here do not provide a directly comparable Spanish-learning study for the two apps.
