AWS vs Google Cloud for a 24/7 4K 60fps YouTube Live Channel

For a YouTube-only 24/7 4K60 channel, direct encoder ingest may be simpler than AWS or Google Cloud. Compare the workflows, bitrate limits, costs, and restart requirements before building a cloud pipeline.

For a YouTube-only channel, you may not need either AWS or Google Cloud. YouTube automatically transcodes a compatible incoming live feed for viewers, so a direct encoder-to-YouTube setup can avoid the added cost and operational work of a cloud video pipeline. Use AWS or Google Cloud when you have a specific need for cloud ingest, managed transcoding, controlled failover, or distribution beyond YouTube—not simply because the channel must stay live.

There is no evidence-based blanket cost winner for a 24/7 4K60 YouTube channel. The documented AWS cost examples use different, lower-resolution event profiles, while Google Cloud pricing depends on channel activity and input/output resolutions. Compare current regional estimates against the same workload before choosing.

First decide whether you need a cloud video pipeline

There are two different jobs that can be called “cloud streaming.” In a direct setup, an encoder sends a live feed to YouTube, and YouTube handles viewer-facing transcoding. In a cloud-processing setup, AWS or Google Cloud first ingests the feed, processes or packages it, and then publishes or distributes outputs. The second approach can address specific delivery requirements, but it is not automatically necessary for a stream whose only destination is YouTube.

  • Start with direct-to-YouTube if your encoder can produce a stable, compatible feed and YouTube is the only destination.
  • Evaluate Google Cloud Live Stream API if you want managed ingest and transcoding into outputs such as HLS or DASH, including primary and backup inputs.
  • Evaluate the cited AWS reference architecture if you need its managed ingest, packaging, and distribution workflow. Its components address a broader delivery pipeline, not just sending a feed to YouTube.

These are not automatically equivalent products. Google’s documented Live Stream API workflow focuses on managed ingest and transcoding; the AWS reference adds a CDN distribution stage. Decide what outputs and delivery paths the channel actually needs before comparing cloud bills.

What each option does

AWS: a multi-service live distribution architecture

AWS’s documented reference uses AWS Elemental MediaLive to ingest two feeds and create adaptive-bitrate HLS output. AWS Elemental MediaPackage ingests those outputs and packages HLS, DASH, and CMAF, while CloudFront serves the distribution. The design includes redundant inputs.

This is a plausible managed workflow, not proof that every component is required to publish to YouTube. The cited AWS material does not establish a 4K60 bitrate limit or a 24/7 price for this particular YouTube use case. Confirm service availability and rates for your region and configuration.

Google Cloud: managed ingest and transcoding

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API ingests a source stream, transcodes multiple renditions, and publishes outputs such as HLS or DASH. Its overview describes attaching primary and backup inputs. This can be useful when you need cloud-managed outputs, but the documented service should not be confused with YouTube’s own ingest endpoint.

Google Cloud recommends SRT for encoder-to-cloud input when the encoder supports it, citing packet recovery, forward error correction, multiple audio elementary streams, and higher bandwidth as advantages over RTMP. YouTube separately recommends RTMPS for its ingest. In a cloud-processing design, configure the encoder-to-cloud input and cloud-to-YouTube output as separate workflow legs; an SRT input to Google Cloud is not the same connection as an RTMPS output to YouTube.

Direct encoder to YouTube: the simpler baseline

YouTube’s live ingest guidance says incoming live streams are automatically transcoded into multiple viewer formats. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 in its encoder settings, recommends RTMPS, and supports up to 60fps. If YouTube is the sole audience destination, first test whether a compatible encoder can deliver the source feed reliably without a cloud processing layer.

Can Google Cloud handle a 4K60 workflow?

Google Cloud documents UHD input up to 2160p/60 at 50 Mbps and UHD output up to 2160p/60 at 25 Mbps. Its best-practices guidance recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 2160p60 input and 25 Mbps for H.264 2160p50/60 output. Those figures describe different sides of Google’s processing workflow: input and generated output.

YouTube’s own recommended H.264 bitrate for 4K/2160p at 60fps is 35 Mbps. Its listed AV1/H.265 range for that resolution and frame rate is 10–40 Mbps. Do not treat Google’s 25 Mbps UHD output figure as a YouTube requirement or as a contradiction of YouTube’s 35 Mbps H.264 ingest recommendation: one is Google’s documented output limit/recommendation, and the other is YouTube’s ingest guidance. If a cloud workflow will send a 4K60 output to YouTube, verify that the selected codec, bitrate, and output profile satisfy the destination’s current guidance.

How to compare the costs fairly

A 24/7 channel runs continuously, and a 4K60 profile can use different services and resources from the lower-resolution event examples in vendor planning guides. Cost also depends on region, active hours, input and output profiles, number of renditions, redundancy, and—when you distribute beyond YouTube—audience traffic and CDN egress.

Option or published example What the documented figure covers Can it price a 24/7 4K60 YouTube channel?
AWS planning-guide example: about $69.74 Amazon Web Services estimates approximately $69.74 for a one-hour live event with about 1,000 viewers using its SD-540p profile, under that guide’s assumptions; the documentation page does not state a year. No. It is a one-hour SD example, not a 4K60, always-on YouTube quote.
AWS planning-guide HD example A separate one-hour example uses about 10,000 viewers and an HD-1080p profile; the cited material does not supply a comparable 4K60, 24/7 YouTube price. No. Do not extrapolate it into a 4K60 channel estimate.
Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing Rates vary by input and output resolution and are based on how long each channel remains active. Google specifies a ten-minute minimum charge; after that, active durations round up to the nearest minute. Not without selecting the region, inputs, renditions, resolutions, and active duration in the current pricing calculation.

For a useful comparison, price the same number of running hours, input feeds, renditions, UHD profiles, redundancy choices, and regions. Include CloudFront or other delivery egress only where viewers actually receive a cloud-distributed output. Do not compare an AWS distribution design against Google processing alone, or either cloud bill against a direct-to-YouTube feed without accounting for the different services included.

Plan for 24/7 continuity, not just a successful start

Google’s quota guidance says a Live Stream API channel that remains in an active state for 24 hours may be restarted. A continuous channel therefore needs monitoring, automated recovery, and a tested way to resume publishing after a restart. Do not assume one API session is an unbroken perpetual process.

AWS’s cited reference architecture includes redundant inputs, but the reviewed AWS sources do not certify uninterrupted 24/7 operation for this specific YouTube use case. Neither architecture, by itself, establishes a zero-interruption guarantee. Define the acceptable interruption and recovery target, then test the full lifecycle—including source loss, cloud processing, output publishing, and recovery—before relying on it.

A practical decision process

  1. Write down the actual destination. If viewers watch only on YouTube, begin by testing a direct compatible encoder feed; YouTube performs viewer-facing transcoding.
  2. Specify the video profile. Record resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate for each workflow leg. For a direct H.264 2160p60 feed, use YouTube’s 35 Mbps recommendation as the starting reference. For Google Cloud processing, separately account for its documented 50 Mbps H.264 input recommendation and 25 Mbps output recommendation.
  3. List required outputs. If you need HLS/DASH renditions or distribution beyond YouTube, determine whether Google’s managed outputs or the AWS MediaLive–MediaPackage–CloudFront design better matches those requirements.
  4. Choose the failure design. Decide whether you need primary/backup inputs, what should happen after a source or publishing failure, and how you will monitor and restart the workflow. Include Google’s possible 24-hour active-state restart in the test plan.
  5. Build like-for-like regional estimates. Include running hours, each input and rendition, redundancy, and any audience delivery or CDN egress. Treat AWS’s SD and HD event examples as examples only, not forecasts for this channel.
  6. Run a sustained test before launch. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Check the actual ingest status, output profile, audio/video continuity, and recovery behavior rather than assuming the configured bitrate or backup path is working.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your 24/7 channel is built from uploaded recordings or a playlist rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to try first: it keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day with no card.

StreamNeo is not an AWS or Google Cloud transcoding/distribution stack: it plays uploaded videos to YouTube and does not go live from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud handles looping, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; the service also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card.

Monthly service: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free trial.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Buying cloud processing just to get viewer resolutions. YouTube automatically transcodes incoming live streams; first verify that direct ingest meets the channel’s needs.
  • Mixing up input and output bitrates. Google’s 50 Mbps input and 25 Mbps output figures apply to different legs. YouTube’s 35 Mbps H.264 recommendation is for its own 4K60 ingest.
  • Treating a one-hour AWS event estimate as a monthly bill. Its cited $69.74 example is an SD-540p event with about 1,000 viewers, not the target channel’s workload.
  • Assuming a stream session will run forever. Google documents a possible restart after 24 hours in active state; plan and test recovery.
  • Assuming redundant components guarantee zero downtime. Redundancy is a design element, not proof of uninterrupted service. Define and test a recovery target.
  • Sending SRT and RTMPS to the same endpoint. Google Cloud’s preferred SRT input and YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest are separate workflow connections when cloud processing is involved.

Copyright and channel eligibility still matter

Cloud hosting does not change YouTube’s rules. Before looping recordings, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies. A technically healthy 24/7 feed does not by itself establish that a channel or its reused content is eligible for monetization. Check YouTube’s current policy pages and the channel’s account status before building a continuous programming schedule.
