To broadcast a French-language radio station on YouTube Live, send the station’s audio program through a computer or hardware encoder to an eligible, verified YouTube channel, and provide a suitable visual feed. Before you go live, test the encoder and upload connection, check the YouTube preview, and confirm that your music, recordings, performances, and visuals are cleared for online live and archived use in the relevant territories.
1. Check that the YouTube channel can livestream
YouTube’s current live-stream guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube also lists a minimum creator age of 16 and supports encoder-based streaming. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio before preparing a broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

For a continuous radio-style program, an encoder workflow lets you send the station’s program feed rather than relying on a webcam session. The documentation reviewed does not make encoder streaming mandatory for every channel or format; choose a route that fits your station’s program and account requirements.

2. Route the station audio to the encoder
Connect the station’s program output to the computer or hardware encoder that will send the stream. The correct connection depends on the station’s console, automation system, and available equipment. If the computer cannot accept the console’s output directly, a USB audio interface may provide the connection, but it is not a universal YouTube requirement. Confirm the signal path with your equipment documentation and check that the encoder receives a clean program feed.

3. Create the YouTube live event and choose visuals
In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream creation flow and select encoder streaming. Set the stream title, language, schedule, privacy, and other event details that apply to your broadcast. Use French as the program language where the relevant field is available.
An encoder broadcast is a video stream, even when the program is radio. Supply a visual component appropriate to the station—such as a cleared station image or other suitable visual presentation—and check it in the preview. YouTube’s reviewed setup guidance does not require one particular still image, visualization, or camera feed. Make sure you have permission to use the visual material as well as the audio.

4. Configure the encoder and verify upload capacity
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live-stream ingestion. Use it where your encoder supports it, and enter the stream details shown for the event in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio in its advanced settings. Treat that as YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that it is right for every station’s production chain. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Choose audio encoding supported by your encoder and follow YouTube’s current guidance for the event.
- Measure available upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube’s French-language live tips recommend planning 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate; this is guidance, not a universal guarantee.
- Test with representative station audio and the intended visual feed before the scheduled broadcast.
The cited YouTube Help pages do not state publication years for these figures. Check the current event and encoder guidance in YouTube Studio if the interface or recommended settings have changed.

5. Clear music, recording, performance, and visual rights
Language does not determine which broadcast rules apply: a French-language station may operate in one country and reach listeners elsewhere. Identify the station’s jurisdiction, the territories in which the stream will be available, and the repertoire and recordings it will use. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the broadcaster to have the rights needed for exploitation on Google services worldwide and to meet applicable legal and regulatory requirements in the territory of the live stream. A terrestrial broadcast licence or a YouTube account alone does not establish that online live and archived use is covered. Read YouTube’s terms of service and confirm the applicable permissions with the relevant rights holders or administrators.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. Even when a station believes it has a licence, a match can lead YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube says a rights owner may need to add a licensed channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived live streams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright issues. Resolve allowlisting questions with the rights holder or administrator before the broadcast.

6. Run a preflight and monitor the broadcast
Set up well before airtime so there is time to fix connection, audio, or event-setting problems. YouTube’s French-language live-stream tips recommend configuring the encoder in advance, checking the preview, confirming that the live player is reachable, and continuously monitoring audio and video. They also recommend checking playback on mobile as well as through the channel or player. See YouTube’s live-stream tips.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Start the encoder and confirm that YouTube receives the expected feed.
- Review the Studio preview for picture, audio level, and sync before starting the public broadcast.
- Check that the event and live player are reachable as intended, including from a mobile device.
- During the program, watch stream health and listen for silence, distortion, or interruptions.
- Decide in advance how the station will respond if its upload connection or encoder fails. YouTube recommends a backup encoder for larger setups; whether that is worthwhile depends on the station’s reliability needs.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | The channel may not be verified or may have a live-stream restriction. | Check channel eligibility and restrictions in YouTube Studio before the event. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | The encoder may be using the wrong event details, ingestion protocol, or input. | Confirm the event’s stream details, use RTMPS where supported, and verify that the selected audio input has signal. |
| The stream drops or becomes unstable | Upload capacity may be insufficient or fluctuating. | Check upload bandwidth rather than download speed, preserve the recommended headroom, and test under representative conditions. |
| The audio is silent, distorted, or unbalanced | The wrong source may be selected, or the incoming level may be unsuitable. | Check the station output, encoder input selection, meters, and a test listen before going live. |
| The live stream is interrupted after a music match | YouTube’s copyright matching may have identified third-party content, even if the station believes it is licensed. | Review the claim and contact the rights holder or administrator about the necessary channel allowlisting and permissions. |
| A claim appears on the archived broadcast | Content ID can claim archived live streams after they end. | Review the claim and confirm that the permissions cover the archived use as well as live transmission. |
