Bluehost is the easier choice for a beginner building a conventional WordPress site; AWS is the better fit when you want control over a virtual server or plan to use other AWS services. For a typical website hosted on AWS, start by evaluating Lightsail, not EC2: Lightsail is the simpler VPS-style option, while EC2 offers more flexible compute.
How the services differ
Bluehost sells shared and WordPress hosting plans with site features bundled into a hosting-specific setup. AWS offers cloud infrastructure rather than one equivalent, packaged web-hosting plan. Its Lightsail service provides virtual private server instances and related building blocks; EC2 provides more flexible compute capacity.

| Decision | Bluehost | AWS Lightsail or EC2 |
|---|---|---|
| Service model | Shared and WordPress hosting plans with bundled features. | Lightsail is a VPS-oriented offering; EC2 is flexible cloud compute. |
| Setup and control | The Starter plan lists managed WordPress updates and a migration tool. | AWS’s WordPress tutorial covers launching an instance, configuring a custom domain and HTTPS, and SSH access. |
| Cost framing | Starter was listed at $3.99 per month for a 36-month term, renewing at $9.99 per month, when checked October 7, 2026. | Lightsail describes monthly plans with specified machine configurations and transfer allowances. A workload-specific, like-for-like total is not established here. |
| Best suited to | Owners who want a packaged hosting experience without managing a virtual server. | Owners who want server control, can handle setup and maintenance, or expect to use other AWS services. |
What Bluehost Starter includes—and what its price means
When checked on October 7, 2026, Bluehost’s pricing page listed Starter at $3.99 per month with a 36-month term and a renewal price of $9.99 per month. Treat this as the offer shown on that date, not a guaranteed future rate or a verified September 2026 price. Confirm the current term, renewal price, and plan details before purchasing.

The same Starter listing included 10 websites, 10 GB of NVMe storage, managed WordPress updates, a migration tool, a free CDN, and 24/7 chat support. Phone support was not included at that tier. Bluehost also advertised a 99.99% uptime SLA; that is the provider’s stated service commitment, not an independently measured uptime result. See Bluehost’s plan details.
The introductory monthly figure is tied to a three-year commitment, so compare the total commitment and renewal period—not just the displayed monthly rate—with your budget and plans for the site.
When AWS Lightsail is the more practical AWS choice
Lightsail is the closer AWS fit for a straightforward website project because it packages VPS-oriented components such as virtual instances, storage, backups, data transfer, DNS, static IPs, and load balancers. AWS describes Lightsail as “the easiest way to get started with Amazon Web Services (AWS)”; that is AWS’s own characterization. Read AWS’s Lightsail overview.

AWS also provides a WordPress launch tutorial that walks through setting up an instance, a custom domain, HTTPS, and SSH access. That route gives you server control, but also means taking responsibility for setup, updates, and operational choices. Follow the AWS WordPress tutorial.

EC2 is worth considering when a workload needs the flexibility of AWS compute beyond a simple VPS. AWS frames EC2 as more flexible compute and Lightsail as an easier-to-use VPS offering with a predictable monthly price. An ordinary blog does not, by itself, make EC2 necessary. Compare Lightsail and EC2 as AWS presents them.
How to compare the actual costs
Bluehost’s listed price is tied to a specified term and renewal rate. AWS Lightsail costs depend on the configuration and the components your site uses. Before comparing bills, define the Lightsail instance configuration, expected data-transfer needs, backup requirements, and any additional services. The available plan descriptions do not establish a total for a particular workload, so a single AWS monthly figure would not be a reliable comparison.
Which host should you choose?
Choose Bluehost for a conventional WordPress site
Pick Bluehost if you value hosting-specific onboarding and want managed WordPress updates, migration assistance, and chat support listed with the plan rather than taking on virtual-server operations. Check the renewal price and multi-year commitment before signing up.

Choose Lightsail if you want a VPS
Pick AWS Lightsail if you are comfortable managing a server and want a VPS-oriented entry point into AWS, or expect to connect the site to other AWS services. Use AWS’s WordPress tutorial to understand the setup and ongoing responsibilities before committing.

Consider EC2 for broader compute needs
Consider EC2 when you have a reason to use its greater compute flexibility; it is not the default recommendation for a beginner’s ordinary website.

Does AWS or Bluehost perform better?
The available sources do not establish a performance winner. There is no matched AWS-versus-Bluehost test here. Bluehost’s displayed monthly visit allowances are provider claims; a September 2026 TechRadar review said those figures were difficult to corroborate and may function as safety-net limits. They should not be treated as independently tested capacity. Read TechRadar’s Bluehost review.
