Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can look up a public IP address for free to see an approximate network location and which organization or provider the address block is registered to. You cannot use an ordinary lookup to follow someone live, confirm their exact home, or reliably identify the person behind the address.
How do I track an IP address for free?
Here, “track” means checking an address’s registration and approximate geolocation—not monitoring a person in real time. Start only with an IP address you are authorized to inspect, such as one recorded in a service’s security log. A person’s name or username is not enough to discover their IP address.

- Get the address from a legitimate record. Note the IP shown in the relevant service log and preserve the record if you may need to report suspicious activity.
- Check whether it is public. Private and special-use addresses—including common addresses used inside home networks—are not public subscriber addresses that can locate an external person. See IANA’s IPv4 Special-Purpose Address Registry and IPv6 Special-Purpose Address Registry.
- Use an IP geolocation lookup for rough context. Treat its location as an estimate associated with an address or network, not proof that a person was physically there. A map pin does not establish a street address.
- Check the assignment record with ICANN RDAP Lookup. Enter the address in ICANN’s RDAP Lookup Tool. It routes the query to the relevant Regional Internet Registry and can show the organization or network operator associated with the address block.
- Interpret both results cautiously. Dynamic assignment, mobile carrier-grade NAT, VPNs, and residential proxies can make the visible IP differ from the device or person responsible for activity. Email header addresses can also be forged or spoofed.
- If you suspect abuse, report it rather than confronting someone. Preserve the relevant service log and contact the service provider or appropriate reporting channel. If you suspect residential-proxy victimization, secure affected accounts and report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
How do I look up an IP address—and which lookup should I use?
Geolocation and RDAP answer different questions. A geolocation database estimates where an address or network may be associated; RDAP checks registration and assignment records. Neither is a people-search service.
| Lookup | What it can establish | Main limit | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP geolocation database or website | An approximate geographic estimate for an IP address or network | Not a verified person location; an estimate can be coarse or wrong | Quick context |
| ICANN RDAP Lookup | Registry and network assignment records from the relevant Regional Internet Registry | Identifies an organization or network allocation, not the end user | Finding the responsible network operator |
For the official registration-record route, use ICANN RDAP Lookup. A consumer geolocation result is not equivalent to an ISP’s subscriber records or law-enforcement access to them.

Can I find someone’s exact location from their IP address?
No. A free IP lookup may provide a rough geographic estimate, but it does not verify a person’s physical presence or reveal their exact home. The U.S. Department of Justice’s May 2021 DOJ Journal of Federal Law and Practice explains that most IP addresses are dynamically assigned and that an address alone provides, at best, a rough measure of a person’s location. More precise subscriber attribution requires additional ISP records tied to the relevant time.
Mobile connections can be especially difficult to attribute because carrier-grade NAT allows multiple users to share a public-facing address. VPNs and residential proxies can also put an intermediary’s address between the user and a website. The FBI’s March 12, 2026 public-service announcement on residential proxies warns that an IP associated with criminal activity may belong to the intermediary device rather than the person directing the activity.

Can an IP address identify who sent an email?
Not reliably on its own. An email header may contain network details, but IANA warns that headers can be fabricated and IP addresses can be spoofed. A header line or geolocation result alone is not proof of who sent a message. If an email is threatening, fraudulent, or otherwise abusive, preserve it and report it through the email provider or a suitable authority instead of accusing someone based on an IP lookup.

What should I do if an IP lookup points to suspicious activity?
- Keep the original service log or message and note when the activity occurred; the timing may matter for a provider’s records.
- Report the activity to the service provider responsible for the account or system where it occurred.
- If you suspect a device has been used as a residential proxy, follow the FBI’s advice: exercise caution with free VPN applications, avoid suspicious downloads, keep devices updated, secure affected accounts, and change passwords after compromise. Report suspected residential-proxy victimization to IC3.
- Do not confront or retaliate against a person based only on an IP result. The address may point to a network operator, a shared connection, or an intermediary rather than the person responsible.
