AWS Secrets Manager is usually the simpler fit when applications are centered on AWS and scheduled rotation of stored credentials is enough. HashiCorp Vault is a stronger fit when teams need a shared secrets platform across environments or want to issue unique, short-lived credentials that expire under leases. The deciding questions are where your applications run, how credentials should be issued and retired, and who will operate the platform.
What is the core difference?
AWS Secrets Manager and Vault both help replace credentials embedded in application code with centrally managed secrets. Their emphasis differs: Secrets Manager is an AWS managed service for storing, retrieving, and rotating secrets; Vault is a broader secrets platform that can also generate credentials on demand and manage their lease-based lifecycle.

Secrets Manager covers database and application credentials, OAuth tokens, API keys, and other secrets. AWS describes runtime retrieval as an alternative to hard-coding credentials, and says the service can manage secrets for AWS, third-party services, and on-premises resources. It is therefore AWS-integrated, not limited to secrets used only by AWS resources. AWS Secrets Manager overview · AWS Secrets Manager FAQ

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Stored-secret rotation versus dynamic credentials
Rotation changes a credential that already exists; dynamic issuance creates a distinct credential for a request or client, often with an expiry. These approaches address different lifecycle needs.
AWS Secrets Manager: rotate a stored secret
Secrets Manager supports scheduled automatic rotation. Certain integrations offer managed rotation, while other secret types commonly use a Lambda rotation function. AWS best-practices documentation says rotation can be configured as often as every four hours; that is a documented configuration capability, not a recommendation that every workload rotate on that schedule. AWS describes single-user and alternating-user strategies. AWS Secrets Manager best practices · AWS secret rotation

- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
Rotation still requires an application to retrieve and use the current secret correctly. AWS recommends client-side caching components to retrieve secrets efficiently; applications should be designed to handle credential changes without relying indefinitely on an old value. Vault: issue credentials with leases
Vault can map roles to static database users and rotate their passwords on a configured period or schedule. For dynamic database credentials, it generates credentials on demand based on configured roles. Leases govern when those credentials expire, are revoked, or are rotated. Because clients can receive unique credentials, access can be more specifically attributed. Vault database secrets engine

Vault’s cloud secrets engines can issue provider identities or credentials tied to roles and leases, with rotation or revocation when leases expire. Official documentation describes engines for AWS, Azure, and GCP. Confirm support for the exact engine, authentication method, Vault version, and edition you plan to use. Vault secrets engines

Security, integration, and operating responsibility
Secrets Manager and AWS controls
Secrets Manager encrypts secrets at rest using KMS keys and sends retrieved values over TLS. IAM and resource policies control access; AWS recommends least privilege and monitoring through AWS services. Its integrations include CloudTrail, CloudWatch, and SNS for auditing, monitoring, and notifications. AWS Secrets Manager best practices · AWS Secrets Manager FAQ

- FIDO-ONLY FUNCTIONALITY: Supports FIDO2 (passkeys) and FIDO U2F protocols for passwordless and second-factor authentication. Does not support OTP, TOTP, Smart Card (PIV), or other advanced features - upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series for extended functionality
- SECURE AND CONVENIENT: Passwordless MFA login with the YubiKey Bio authenticator and biometric information using a fingerprint, with a PIN as a fallback. Simply plug in via USB and use your fingerprint to authenticate
- DEVICE & OS COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Works seamlessly with supported services like Google and Microsoft accounts, and major password managers. See the full compatibility list at "Works With YubiKey"
- DURABLE & RELIABLE: Resistant to tampering, water, and crushing. No batteries or network connectivity required, offering dependable authentication without any downtime. Securely manufactured in USA & Sweden

AWS guidance also distinguishes secrets from other sensitive material: it recommends IAM for AWS credentials, KMS for encryption keys, EC2 Instance Connect for SSH keys, and Certificate Manager for private keys and certificates. Choose a service based on the material and workflow rather than treating Secrets Manager as the default home for every sensitive value. AWS Secrets Manager overview
Vault and a broader secrets platform
Vault’s broader provider and database scope can reduce the need to maintain separate secrets workflows across environments. That flexibility comes with responsibility for selecting and configuring the relevant engines, authentication, policies, availability approach, and upgrades—or evaluating an appropriate managed offering. Compatibility and feature availability depend on the target environment and the Vault version and edition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare total cost
Do not choose a price winner from a service headline or a single unit rate. AWS describes usage-based billing with no minimum or setup fee, but the bill can also involve Lambda for rotation, customer-managed KMS keys, S3 log storage, SNS notifications, and additional CloudTrail copies. Rates and resulting totals depend on region and usage; check the current AWS Secrets Manager pricing page for your workload.
For either option, estimate the cost of the whole operating model, not just secret storage. Include retrieval volume, rotation or credential issuance, supporting infrastructure, monitoring, engineering time, availability requirements, and the selected Vault edition or service. The available product information does not provide a comparable Vault total or a workload-specific cost calculation, so a numeric winner cannot be established without those inputs.
Quick Recap
Choose with this checklist
- Choose AWS Secrets Manager if your applications are mainly on AWS, AWS IAM integration is central, and scheduled rotation of stored credentials meets the need.
- Evaluate Vault if you need a common secrets layer across cloud providers or databases, or if unique temporary credentials with lease-based expiry are important.
- Account for who configures, secures, monitors, and updates the chosen system—not only who stores the secret.
- Before committing, verify regional availability, current service limits and prices, and the precise engine, integration, version, and edition your design requires.
