AWS has released Strands Decider 2B, an open-source model for choosing among options an application supplies—for example, which tool an AI agent should call. Unlike a chatbot, it returns a decision or option scores rather than an unrestricted answer. Its clearest difference from TypeSafe AI’s hosted Jev is that AWS says developers can inspect, modify, and run Strands locally. The available launch comparisons do not show that it beats Jev overall.
What Strands Decider does
A decision model evaluates a bounded question against choices provided by the application. AWS’s examples include classifying text, routing a request, selecting a tool, evaluating an output, and assigning a policy category. One example asks: “Is the string ‘turn on the lights’ about the coffee machine? Yes or no.” Another asks which language the phrase “sihamba ngokushesha” is in, with English, Zulu, and Dutch as the options. AWS says the model can also answer multiple questions about the same prompt efficiently. AWS’s Strands Decider documentation describes this as a workflow component for defined choices, not general text generation.

That makes it potentially useful at a particular decision point inside a larger system. A generative model might interpret a complicated request or write a response; a decider can handle a narrower choice the application knows how to act on. AWS says this model class is significantly worse at complex problems than reasoning models and is not suitable for coding, chatbots, or document summarization.
How AWS built and released it
The Strands Agents team announced the model on October 1, 2026. Strands Decider 2B starts from Qwen3.5-2B. AWS says it removes the base model’s language-model head and replaces it with a pointer head that scores answer options against a representation of the question. The team fine-tunes the model’s torso with a rank-16 LoRA adapter; the pointer head has just over one million parameters. AWS says the release includes model weights, code, training data, and scripts. The launch post and documentation identify the published checkpoint as version 19, following earlier design iterations.

AWS says the model can run on a local CPU or GPU. Its example places a decider in Strands’ agent-intervention mechanism before a tool call. The model assesses whether proposed tool arguments are grounded in what the user said and whether clarification should come first. The questions and thresholds in the example were manually selected: the model supplies a judgment, while the developer sets the policy and decides what action follows. This is a possible safeguard component, not a blanket guarantee that tool use is safe.
What the launch benchmarks show—and don’t
AWS reports that Strands Decider ranked third among 33 models in the 2B class on JevBench’s public set, and first among 30 after excluding models slightly above 2B parameters. Those are AWS’s results on that benchmark set, not a general ranking across decision tasks. AWS also reports median latency of about 115 milliseconds on its cited local hardware and about 153 milliseconds for small tasks on an M3 MacBook. Its latency graph uses an RTX 3090 for measurements of an earlier checkpoint, v18; AWS says latency grows approximately linearly with task size. Actual results can vary with hardware, input size, workload, and model version. AWS’s post provides the launch figures and test context.

VentureBeat’s reading of AWS’s chart puts version 19 at roughly 72% accuracy and a 0.35 Brier score; Mapika’s similarly sized model appears at roughly 76% accuracy and 0.32. A Brier score measures the calibration of probabilistic predictions, not accuracy, and lower values indicate better calibration. The chart does not include Jev, so it cannot establish a Strands-versus-Jev winner. VentureBeat also notes that Jev’s hosted latency and Strands’ local latency were measured under different conditions, and that AWS did not provide a general self-hosting cost estimate. VentureBeat’s analysis discusses these limits.

A fair comparison would need the same tasks, candidate sets, hardware or service conditions, and measurement methods. It would also need to consider accuracy, calibration, latency, and total operating cost—including compute and maintenance—not just whether weights are downloadable.

Strands and Jev address a similar role: making a defined choice within an application workflow. But the deployment models differ. AWS releases Strands’ weights and development materials for local use and modification; TypeSafe AI’s Jev is accessed as a hosted API. That gives Strands a clear advantage in inspectability and the option of self-hosting, while also leaving the operator responsible for running and maintaining it. The cited evidence does not establish which model is more accurate, faster under equivalent conditions, or cheaper overall.
The title’s “flood” describes a developing field rather than a measured market count. TechCrunch reported that AWS distinguished engineer Marc Brooker began the project after encountering Jev and building his own version, which AWS later cleaned up and released through Strands Labs. Brooker described the intended role as deciding “what is the next thing for me to do here, based on where I am?” TechCrunch refers broadly to dozens of similar models, but the cited coverage does not provide a formal census or industry-wide market-size estimate.

A September 30, 2026 arXiv preprint studies Jev for recommendation reranking across Amazon Reviews domains and candidate-set sizes. Its abstract reports strong recommendation effectiveness against the study’s tested baselines and more gradual latency growth than pointwise Qwen rerankers, while noting slower serving than recommendation-specific models. That is evidence about one recommendation task, not a direct comparison with Strands or a verdict on every use of decision models.

When Strands Decider may fit
- Consider it when an application must choose from a defined set of answers, route a request, select a tool, or evaluate whether a proposed action is grounded in supplied information.
- Consider local deployment if inspecting or modifying the model and controlling where it runs are important, while accounting for the work of operating it.
- Use a more capable generative or reasoning model for open-ended conversation, complex reasoning, code generation, or summarization; AWS explicitly says Strands Decider is a poor fit for those tasks.
- Validate the decision in your own workflow. Benchmark performance does not choose the right thresholds or policy for an application, and the application remains responsible for what happens after a decision.
