There is no universal cheaper or better VPS for a 24/7 YouTube playlist stream. Compare the exact server region, plan, outbound-transfer allowance, stream bitrate and whether the server only relays an encoded feed or also transcodes it. Lightsail bundles compute and transfer into monthly plans; Hetzner Cloud pricing varies by resource class and location, with public IPv4 listed separately in its documentation. Neither plan price guarantees an uninterrupted end-to-end broadcast.
Start by defining what the server will do
A “playlist stream” can describe two different workloads. In a relay setup, a process sends already encoded video and audio to YouTube without re-encoding. In a transcoding setup, the server decodes and re-encodes media, which can require substantially more CPU. You might also fetch media from elsewhere or loop a local file; those choices affect network traffic and storage.

- Relay: estimate continuous outbound video traffic and choose a plan with enough transfer, while testing the actual process and route.
- Transcode: assess CPU performance under the intended resolution, frame rate and codec. Do not assume a low-cost VPS can encode reliably just because it has a certain vCPU count.
- Local loop: check that the server has enough disk space for the playlist files and that the playlist process can recover after a failure.
AWS says that for highly configurable instances needing consistently high CPU performance for applications such as video encoding, it recommends Amazon EC2 rather than Lightsail. That is a reason to examine the workload carefully, not a guarantee that any particular EC2 instance will meet it. AWS Lightsail instance FAQ.

Compare the same server region, public-IP arrangement, storage, CPU and memory class, tax treatment, and expected traffic. A headline monthly price is not a complete cost estimate for a continuous broadcast.

YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. At that bitrate for 30 days (2,592,000 seconds), the calculation is 14 × 2,592,000 ÷ 8,000,000 = 4.536 decimal TB, or about 4.54 TB of video payload before protocol overhead and other traffic. This is a calculation, not a YouTube-published monthly usage figure. At a different steady bitrate, the estimate scales linearly. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Use your actual outgoing bitrate and planned runtime, then allow headroom for protocol overhead and any other server traffic. AWS counts inbound and outbound usage against the allowance, although its FAQ describes charges for excess outbound traffic. For Hetzner, check the allowance and overage terms for the precise product and location. A stream that fetches media from another server can also add inbound traffic; a local file loop has different network and storage needs.
Configure YouTube ingest and test the whole path
- Set the encoder for the intended output. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Choose a resolution and bitrate appropriate to the actual source and channel workflow; 14 Mbps is YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p30, not a universal bitrate for every output. - Use the correct ingest URL and stream key. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, copy the ingest details into the server-side encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, logs and screenshots, and rotate it if exposed. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Run a realistic test before relying on the stream. Include audio and video movement similar to the intended broadcast, then confirm YouTube receives a healthy signal and that the stream looks and sounds right. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream. During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” YouTube encoder settings and stream health guidance.
- Exercise recovery deliberately. Test what happens if the playlist process exits, the server restarts or the connection to YouTube drops. Configure process restart and reconnect behavior yourself, and verify recovery reaches a healthy YouTube ingest; an automatically restarted process is not by itself proof that the broadcast has recovered.
Include channel rules in the plan
Technical delivery does not establish that you have the right to stream the playlist or that it complies with YouTube’s policies. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules for reused content before building a continuous channel around recordings. A working encoder cannot prevent a rights claim, removal or other platform action.

Choose based on your workload, not a headline price
- Lightsail may fit if its bundled plan, region and transfer allowance suit a modest relay workload and you value AWS’s integrated environment. Confirm the region-specific allowance, especially in the listed half-allowance regions.
- Hetzner may fit if a suitable resource class and location meet your needs and its applicable traffic allowance works for the stream. Add public IPv4 where needed and confirm the current plan and traffic terms.
- Either needs validation for transcoding or a broadcast where interruption matters. Provider documentation does not establish a comparable playlist-stream benchmark, route-quality result or end-to-end availability guarantee for these two options.
For either VPS, total cost includes the selected server and any applicable transfer overage, IP, tax, storage or supporting services. Your own time administering the operating system, encoder and recovery setup is also part of the practical trade-off.
