AWS Elemental MediaStore End of Support: What to Use Instead

MediaStore is no longer available. AWS recommends S3 for simple live-video origins and MediaPackage for advanced packaging, failover, and low-latency needs.

AWS Elemental MediaStore is no longer available. For a simple live-video origin, AWS recommends Amazon S3; for workflows that need DRM, ad insertion, cross-region failover, or specific low-latency requirements, it points to AWS Elemental MediaPackage. Which one fits depends on what MediaStore did in your architecture—not on a one-for-one replacement rule.

AWS lists November 12, 2025 as MediaStore’s end-of-support date in its General Reference. Its discontinuation announcement says customers could use the service until November 13, 2025, after which its capabilities would no longer be available. The dates reflect different wording in the two AWS sources; either way, the deadline has passed.

Choose the replacement by workflow

MediaStore could act as a live-video origin, but AWS’s recommended destination depends on the origin’s job and the processing your viewers or downstream systems require. Amazon S3 is the suggested destination for a simple origin workflow. MediaPackage is the better direction when the workflow needs advanced packaging or the specific failover and latency capabilities AWS identifies.

What your workflow needs AWS direction What to validate before migrating
Simple live-video origin without advanced packaging needs Amazon S3 Confirm origin behavior, request patterns, latency targets, and how delivery is arranged for your workload.
DRM or ad insertion that requires repackaging AWS Elemental MediaPackage Map the required DRM, ad, output-format, and player behavior to the MediaPackage configuration you intend to use.
Cross-region failover or specific low-latency requirements AWS Elemental MediaPackage Check current feature availability and regional details against the actual recovery and latency targets.
Persistent objects that must be retained Copy to a chosen storage target, such as Amazon S3 Determine what must be retained and whether it remains accessible after shutdown; do not assume the former MediaStore APIs still work.

AWS’s November 2024 discontinuation announcement describes S3 as a lower-cost option for live-video origination than MediaStore, but it gives no numeric comparison or workload assumptions. Treat that as AWS’s general positioning, not a guaranteed saving for your bill. AWS also cites S3 strong read-after-write consistency, implemented in 2020, and improved tail-latency performance as reasons S3 became more suitable for live-video origination; those are AWS’s statements, not an independent benchmark.

Understand the difference between an origin and a packaging service

S3 is object storage. In a simple origin design, it can hold the media objects an origin workflow serves. MediaPackage is a video packaging service intended for workflows that need capabilities such as repackaging. Those roles overlap in a delivery architecture, but they are not interchangeable in every design.

AWS’s MediaLive guidance described MediaStore as the simpler option when repackaging was unnecessary. Since MediaStore has shut down, that comparison is useful only for understanding the workflow distinction; it is not a current availability recommendation. If your former MediaStore setup did no more than serve objects, assess S3. If downstream systems depend on packaging, DRM, advertising insertion, or particular failover and latency behavior, assess MediaPackage and validate the exact requirements before selecting a design.

AWS’s own decision rule, stated by Dan Gehred, Sr. Industry Product Marketing Manager for Media & Entertainment, in the AWS for M&E Blog on November 12, 2024, was: “If you have a simple live video streaming workflow, you can migrate to Amazon S3. For advanced workflows that require cross-region failover or specific low-latency requirements, you will need to migrate to AWS Elemental MediaPackage.” Use that as a starting point, then test against your system’s real outputs, players, and operational targets.

Separate live-origin objects from data you must keep

Do not assume every object that passed through MediaStore needs a permanent copy. AWS notes that live-origin data is often transient: an encoder may delete it after a configured period, or a lifecycle policy may remove it. First identify whether your former origin held only temporary live segments or also contained persistent assets, archives, or other records your organization must retain.

If the data is persistent

AWS’s discontinuation announcement said customers could use MediaStore List and Get APIs to copy persistent data to a storage target such as S3. That guidance describes the announced migration approach; it does not establish that those APIs remain accessible now that the shutdown date has passed.

If you missed the shutdown window

AWS advised customers who could not retrieve data before the deadline, or who had other questions, to contact AWS Support through their AWS account. The announcement does not promise that post-shutdown retrieval will be possible. Contact Support promptly, identify the account and affected container or data, and ask what access—if any—is still available before planning around recovery.

Plan the migration around the actual delivery path

Before changing production traffic, document what the MediaStore origin supplied and what consumes it. The replacement decision should follow those dependencies, rather than a product-name mapping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory the former role. Record whether MediaStore served live segments only, persistent objects, or both; identify encoders, origin requests, delivery layers, players, and downstream processing.
  2. Write down requirements that affect the destination. Include DRM, ad insertion, output formats, cross-region failover, latency targets, retention, and the regions in which the workflow must operate.
  3. Select a candidate architecture. Evaluate S3 for a simple origin. Evaluate MediaPackage where repackaging or the advanced needs AWS identifies are part of the workflow. A design can involve more than one service; do not presume a single destination covers every role.
  4. Validate current service details. Check the current AWS documentation and region-specific feature availability for your design. The recommendation to use S3 or MediaPackage does not by itself confirm that a particular configuration meets your operational targets.
  5. Test before relying on the new path. Verify that the origin serves the expected objects and formats, that players behave as required, and that the operational and recovery procedures meet your team’s acceptance criteria.
  6. Handle retained data separately. Reconcile the persistent objects that must be preserved with the data actually available to retrieve. If former MediaStore access is unavailable, ask AWS Support rather than assuming a copy operation can still be run.

Do not confuse MediaStore migration with MediaPackage v1-to-v2 migration

MediaPackage v2 uses distinct resource identifiers from v1. AWS’s v2 user guide says there is no automated process to migrate MediaPackage v1 resources to v2. This is a separate caveat for teams considering MediaPackage: choosing it as a MediaStore replacement does not automatically convert existing MediaPackage v1 resources, and the v1-to-v2 statement is not an automatic MediaStore conversion method.

What the broadcaster 5 case study can—and cannot—tell you

An AWS case study published June 29, 2026 describes broadcaster 5 moving from a dual-pipeline arrangement to MediaPackage v2. It documents a complex, customer-specific migration and capabilities including DVB-DASH and accessibility signaling. It is evidence that MediaPackage v2 can be part of an advanced broadcast workflow, not a universal migration recipe for MediaStore users. Your output formats, player requirements, pipeline design, and regional needs determine whether that pattern is relevant.

Where StreamNeo fits

StreamNeo is not a replacement for MediaStore, S3, or MediaPackage, and it is not a general broadcast origin or packaging service. It serves a different use case: keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos, with looping handled in the cloud. If that is the problem you are solving separately, see StreamNeo. To try that YouTube workflow, start a free first day with no card.
