Short answer: A prerecorded YouTube video is not an HLS or CMAF input just because it was published on YouTube. In MediaPackage v2, HLS and CMAF are live-ingest formats chosen to match what an upstream encoder sends. For recorded content, AWS’s documented classic MediaPackage VOD workflow uses source assets in Amazon S3. The AWS pages reviewed do not document direct ingestion from a YouTube playback URL.
First decide whether your source is live or prerecorded
“Input type” refers to how a MediaPackage v2 live channel receives media, not the website where a video was published. A YouTube URL identifies a playback source; it does not tell you which MediaPackage ingest type to select.

A recorded video being replayed by an encoder as a live event is a different case from packaging a VOD asset: MediaPackage receives the encoder’s supported live ingest, not a special “prerecorded YouTube” format.

If you are configuring a MediaPackage v2 live channel
Choose HLS or CMAF from the encoder output
AWS documents HLS and CMAF as live inputs pushed from an external source or encoder over HTTPS. For HLS, the encoder must produce HLS with TS streams and send them using HTTP PUT. For CMAF, the encoder must follow the DASH-IF Live Media Ingest Protocol. The fact that your program was previously available on YouTube does not determine this selection; the encoder’s output does.

MediaPackage v2 also lists MULTIVIEW in its API, but that is a channel mode that composites other channels and has no ingest of its own. It is not an alternative format for a video file or YouTube URL.
Check the input constraints before creating the channel
- Live input media must be unencrypted.
- The channel must include at least one video track; audio and video tracks may be muxed or unmuxed.
- A channel policy is required when sources are outside your AWS account.
- In the v2 API,
InputTypeis immutable after channel creation. If omitted, it defaults to HLS. Specify and verify the correct value before creating the channel.
For prerecorded material, use the documented VOD route
AWS’s classic MediaPackage documentation distinguishes VOD from live input: the VOD source resides in an Amazon S3 bucket, and the documented source formats include HLS and MP4 with a SMIL manifest. Follow that asset-based workflow for recorded material rather than trying to choose HLS or CMAF based on its YouTube origin.

The AWS pages reviewed here do not establish a direct YouTube URL ingestion path. That is a documentation limit, not proof that AWS categorically prohibits every possible intermediary workflow. If you do not have the original recording, obtain an authorized source asset or arrange for an encoder to deliver a supported live stream.
