If AWS Elemental MediaLive reports a nonzero DroppedFrames value, its encoder is dropping input frames because it cannot process them fast enough to keep up with real time. Check the metric for the affected pipeline and incident window, then compare the actual output settings with YouTube’s ingest guidance and Live Control Room health messages. Those signals describe different parts of the path; neither alone identifies the root cause.
What MediaLive’s DroppedFrames metric means
AWS defines DroppedFrames as the number of input frames dropped during a metric period. A value other than zero indicates that the encoder cannot process incoming video fast enough to keep up with real time. AWS recommends viewing the metric with the Sum statistic. The metric supports dimensions including Pipeline and Region, so inspect the affected pipeline rather than relying on an account-wide or mismatched view. AWS MediaLive metrics

A missing datapoint is not proof that the stream is healthy. AWS notes that a datapoint may be absent when a channel is stopped, initializing, waiting for initial input, paused, or not producing output. Confirm that the channel was actively producing output during the interval you are investigating. AWS MediaLive metrics

| Setting | What to verify | Guidance and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Codec and resolution | Confirm the output codec and resolution configured for the YouTube destination. | YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Select the bitrate row for the codec YouTube is ingesting; do not apply an H.264 rate to a different codec. YouTube encoder settings |
| Frame rate | Confirm the output frame rate is the intended one and that the bitrate comparison uses that same frame rate. | YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports up to 60 fps. YouTube encoder settings |
| Bitrate | Use the YouTube table row matching codec, resolution, and frame rate. | As published in YouTube Help guidance available on 2026-10-03: H.264 1080p30 has a recommended bitrate of 14 Mbps and minimum of 5 Mbps; H.264 1080p60 has a recommended bitrate of 17 Mbps and minimum of 6 Mbps. These are specific guidance rows, not universal targets. Check YouTube’s current table for the configured format. YouTube encoder settings |
| Rate control | Check whether MediaLive’s rate-control mode produces the output behavior you intend. | YouTube recommends CBR. MediaLive CBR matches its specified bitrate; VBR targets an average and permits short increases up to a maximum; QVBR varies bitrate to target quality within a maximum. If YouTube flags bitrate, first compare the configured behavior with its CBR recommendation, then monitor health after any change. YouTube encoder settings AWS CBR and VBR |
| Keyframe interval / GOP | Inspect MediaLive GOP size and its units, then calculate the resulting duration at the configured frame rate. | YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. AWS recommends closed GOP cadence 1 for streaming and warns that 0 breaks output segmenting. A frame count alone is not a duration: check the resulting cadence. YouTube encoder settings AWS encoding settings |
| Ingest protocol | Verify that the destination and configured protocol agree. | YouTube recommends RTMPS; its developer guide describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL. A cleartext RTMP connection will not work if the receiving destination expects RTMPS. YouTube encoder settings YouTube RTMPS guide |
Diagnose the incident in order
- Graph the right CloudWatch series. Select MediaLive
DroppedFrames, useSum, and filter to the active channel’sPipelinedimension in the relevant region. Mark the exact period when viewers or YouTube reported a problem. Check whether the metric rose then and whether the change is isolated to one pipeline. AWS MediaLive metrics - Compare the actual output configuration. For that same incident, check codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, rate-control mode, GOP duration, and protocol. Use the corresponding YouTube bitrate-table row rather than a generic bitrate figure. YouTube encoder settings
- Read YouTube’s Live Control Room health messages. Note whether YouTube reports low video output, or a problem with bitrate, frame rate, codec, or keyframe frequency. “Video output low” means YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming; it is an ingest-side observation, not a redefinition of MediaLive’s encoder metric. YouTube also recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube Live Streaming API stream health YouTube encoder settings
- Correlate output and network context without conflating metrics. MediaLive’s
NetworkOutcan provide context about the outgoing path, but it is not the same asDroppedFrames. The latter counts input frames the encoder drops because it cannot keep up. A nonzero value by itself does not establish a network fault. AWS MediaLive metrics
Use the timestamps and both platforms’ observations to narrow the investigation. Without the channel’s metrics, configuration, and incident times, these signals do not establish a particular channel’s root cause.
Common interpretation errors
- Assuming YouTube caused every dropped frame. MediaLive’s metric is encoder-side evidence about input frames; YouTube health messages describe what reaches YouTube. Check both at the same time.
- Treating a missing metric as zero. Check whether the channel was actually producing output during the selected interval.
- Using one bitrate for every stream. The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Match the exact output format to YouTube’s table.
- Entering a GOP frame count without checking its duration. The resulting interval depends on frame rate; compare duration with YouTube’s two-second recommendation and four-second maximum.
- Changing multiple settings before observing health. Where practical, make a targeted change and recheck the same metrics and YouTube health indicators so the result remains interpretable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live continuously rather than diagnose a MediaLive pipeline, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
