AWS EC2 for Streaming a 4K 60fps Playlist to YouTube Live

Choose an EC2 instance for 4K60 YouTube Live by testing the actual playlist, encoder, network and storage—not by relying on GPU family names alone.

There is no single EC2 instance size that can be recommended for every 4K 60fps playlist. Choose an instance only after confirming that its GPU and software support the encoder you plan to use, its network and storage performance suit the workload, and it can process your actual playlist in real time. AWS documents plausible GPU capabilities, but the available documentation does not establish a minimum instance size or guarantee this workload’s performance.

Start with YouTube’s live-stream settings

Size the encoder and outbound connection around YouTube’s live-ingest guidance—not its separate video-upload recommendations. YouTube Help’s live encoder page, accessed in 2026, recommends these video bitrates for 4K/2160p at 60 fps:

Codec Recommended bitrate Listed minimum
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps
H.265/HEVC or AV1 35 Mbps 10 Mbps

The minimums are not the recommended targets. These are YouTube’s platform settings, not measurements of what a particular EC2 instance can sustain. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1; its guidance recommends RTMPS. Configure the encoder for constant bitrate (CBR), 60 fps and a 2-second keyframe interval. Do not let the keyframe interval exceed 4 seconds. Verify the chosen encoder supports the codec and settings you select. For 4K, YouTube says the low-latency improvement is unavailable, so plan for normal latency.

Why a GPU-capable instance is a candidate, not an answer

A playlist-to-live pipeline can involve decoding the source files, scaling or filtering video, handling audio and encoding the output. The right balance of GPU, vCPU, memory and storage depends on the playlist’s format and the processing chain. A GPU family name alone does not prove that a specific instance will keep this pipeline at 60 fps.

AWS’s EC2 NVIDIA driver guide lists NVENC for video encoding and NVDEC for video decoding among supported APIs, and includes G4dn and G5 in its driver options. NVIDIA describes NVENC as a hardware encoder separate from graphics and CUDA cores. These documents support investigating GPU-backed EC2 configurations; they do not establish performance for your files, software, filters or chosen region.

Choose an instance by testing the whole pipeline

  1. Identify the playlist workload. Record the source resolution, frame rate, codecs, containers and audio formats. Note whether the workflow must scale, deinterlace, filter, mix audio or otherwise process the files. These details determine how much decoding and processing the instance must handle.
  2. Choose the output codec and target bitrate. Use YouTube’s 4K60 live recommendations above as the starting point. Confirm that your encoder implementation supports the chosen codec, CBR, 60 fps and keyframe interval.
  3. Check the exact EC2 size and regional availability. Review its GPU and driver compatibility, vCPU and memory, published network performance and EBS throughput. AWS’s accelerated-computing instance specifications list network bandwidth by size and advise choosing EBS throughput above application needs to avoid a storage bottleneck. Check current availability in your intended region before building around a type.
  4. Allow outbound network headroom. A 50 Mbps video stream sends at least that nominal video payload rate outbound, before operational headroom or other traffic. Compare the required bitrate with the selected size’s published network figures, but do not treat an “up to” figure as guaranteed sustained throughput to YouTube.
  5. Run the actual playlist and encoder together. Measure whether the complete decode/process/encode chain sustains real-time output at 60 fps. A short test using a simple file may miss bottlenecks exposed by more complex playlist items, filters or audio handling.
  6. Test the real ingest route and monitor YouTube. Send a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using the intended settings and route. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” It also says: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Use YouTube’s live encoder guidance when interpreting health warnings.

What to compare between EC2 candidates

  • Encoder path: Confirm the instance, operating system, driver and streaming software expose the hardware codec you plan to use. A listed NVENC/NVDEC API is not proof that every software build will use it.
  • Measured processing rate: Compare sustained real-time performance with your actual playlist and filters, not just a theoretical GPU capability.
  • Network behavior: Review the selected size’s documented network performance and test sustained outbound delivery to the intended YouTube ingest route.
  • Storage and resources: Check EBS throughput along with memory and vCPU needs. Slow reads or CPU-heavy processing can bottleneck a pipeline even when a GPU is present.
  • Operational fit: Confirm the size is available in your target region and calculate the current full-run cost for the duration you need. No universal size, regional price or exact total cost is established here.

Common problems and what to check

  • The stream drops frames or falls behind: Check whether decoding, filters or encoding can keep pace with real time; then inspect outbound stability and storage throughput. Test the same playlist rather than relying on a short sample.
  • YouTube reports unstable stream health: Check the configured bitrate, CBR mode, keyframe interval and ingest route. Compare the actual outbound connection with the selected target bitrate and allow headroom.
  • Hardware encoding is unavailable: Verify the exact instance type, operating system, installed NVIDIA driver and software build. AWS lists supported APIs and driver options, but the software must actually expose and use the encoder.
  • Some playlist items fail while others work: Compare their codecs, containers, frame rates, audio formats and processing requirements. The source files and pipeline—not only the output resolution—affect performance.

Costs and what cannot be inferred from instance names

EC2 cost depends on the selected type, region, runtime and associated storage and data transfer. Since the workload, region and run duration are not specified, a precise instance recommendation or total cost would be misleading. Compare current regional pricing for the candidates that pass your end-to-end test; a low hourly rate is not useful if the configuration cannot sustain the stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded playlist videos rather than manage an EC2 encoder, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not a camera encoder. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
