If you already use Playwright, start with its built-in screenshot assertions; if your UI is organized as Storybook stories, evaluate Loki. BackstopJS remains a useful scenario-based option, but its repository README currently asks for a new maintainer. Choose according to what you need to capture, how your team reviews and approves baseline changes, and whether you can keep rendering environments consistent.
What a BackstopJS alternative needs to replace
Visual regression testing captures a rendered page or component and compares it with an approved reference image. The point is to surface unintended visual changes for review—not to treat every pixel difference as a defect. A replacement may need to provide browser capture, comparison, baseline storage, a review process, and integration with your tests or CI. Decide which of these your team needs before switching tools.
Best-fit alternatives at a glance
| Option | Best fit | Workflow | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test screenshot assertions | Teams already using Playwright for browser tests | toHaveScreenshot() creates reference screenshots on its first run and compares later runs against them. References can be reviewed and committed to version control. |
Visual coverage depends on the tests your team writes and maintains. Rendering can vary across environments. Playwright screenshot assertions. |
| Loki | Component libraries whose UI is represented in Storybook | Storybook-centered visual regression testing. | A component-and-story workflow may be less natural for broad sets of arbitrary page scenarios. Check current compatibility and maintenance before adopting. Loki project site. |
| BackstopJS | Teams that want configurable page scenarios and visual reports | Configure URLs, viewports, selectors, cookies, readiness conditions, and interactions; run captures, inspect a report, and approve changed references. | It is a standalone scenario/reporting workflow. The BackstopJS repository README currently asks for a new maintainer; that is a maintenance signal, not proof the project is abandoned. BackstopJS repository. |
| reg-suit | Teams exploring comparison and reporting around an existing capture workflow | Described in available material as image comparison and reporting integration, rather than a replacement for browser capture. | Its current official documentation and maintenance status have not been established here; verify both before making it a shortlist choice. UI Verify material. |
| Hosted services such as Argos, Chromatic, or Percy | Teams open to managed review workflows | Vendor-managed capture or review models vary. | These are not self-hosted replacements. Confirm current deployment options and terms with each provider. Argos, Chromatic, Percy. |
There is no evidence here for a general speed or cost winner. Compare tools against your own application and CI setup rather than assuming one is faster or cheaper.
Choose by workflow, not by feature count
Choose Playwright when browser tests are already part of your suite
Playwright can handle the browser interaction, screenshot assertion, and reference-image workflow in the same test framework. That reduces the need to maintain a separate scenario system, but the team must still decide which pages, states, and interactions deserve visual coverage.
#1 Best Overall

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Loki when Storybook is your testing surface
If components and their states are already represented as stories, a Storybook-oriented workflow can align visual checks with how the library is developed. If the core need is a catalogue of full-page URLs, selectors, and interactions, validate that the story-based model fits before migrating.
Keep BackstopJS in consideration for page scenarios
BackstopJS describes a three-command workflow: initialize configuration, run tests to compare captures with references, and approve screenshots to update the reference set. Its configuration can describe URLs, viewport sizes, selectors, cookies, readiness conditions, and user interactions. The README also lists an in-browser report, Docker rendering, and Playwright/Puppeteer interaction scripts. The repository currently states, “BackstopJS needs a new maintainer/owner.” Check the project README when making a decision, because the notice may change.
Treat reg-suit as a lead to validate
reg-suit may be worth investigating if capture already happens elsewhere and you need comparison or reporting around it. The available material does not establish its current official documentation or maintenance state, so do not treat it as a verified drop-in BackstopJS replacement without checking the project directly.

Use hosted review tools only if self-hosting is flexible
Argos, Chromatic, and Percy are adjacent options for teams willing to use managed review tooling. A requirement that screenshots and review remain self-hosted rules them out unless the provider confirms a deployment model that satisfies that requirement.
What to verify before migrating
- Capture scope: Are you testing arbitrary pages and user flows, or component stories and states?
- Test integration: Can checks run in your current test framework and CI pipeline without duplicating browser setup?
- Baseline ownership: Where do reference images live, who reviews changes, and how are approved updates recorded?
- Rendering repeatability: Can baseline generation and CI use the same OS, browser version, settings, and execution mode?
- Maintenance and compatibility: Check project notices, releases, and compatibility with your current browser, framework, and Storybook versions.
- Failure handling: Decide how to investigate a genuine visual change versus noise caused by fonts, animation, dynamic content, or environment differences.
Playwright example: add a screenshot assertion
For a Playwright Test project, a minimal visual assertion looks like this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Run the test once to generate its reference screenshot, then review and commit that reference with the test changes. Later runs compare a new screenshot against the committed baseline. See the Playwright documentation for snapshot options, including comparison thresholds and stylesheets that can hide volatile content.

Keep the baseline environment stable
Playwright warns that screenshots can differ with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare references in a consistent environment; pin the browser and test environment where practical. Do not update reference screenshots automatically without reviewing what changed.
Control known sources of noise
- Wait for the page state your test intends to verify before capturing.
- Use Playwright’s documented stylesheet option to hide content that is genuinely volatile, rather than masking broad regions that could contain regressions.
- Set a diff threshold deliberately. A more permissive threshold can reduce noise but may also conceal small visual changes.
- When a diff appears, inspect the image and the environment before accepting a new baseline.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-off website capture or a capture step outside your test suite, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and an MCP server. This one-call example saves a WebP response:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting visual test failures
A screenshot differs on CI but not locally
Compare the CI and local OS, browser version, browser settings, headless mode, and hardware conditions. Rendering differences can result from the environment itself; align environments before changing the reference.
The baseline changed unexpectedly
Check whether the page content, browser, dependencies, or screenshot settings changed. Review the actual diff before approving a new screenshot, and keep the baseline update with the code change that explains it.
A test captures the wrong state
Make the test wait for the intended state—such as a selector or completed interaction—before taking the screenshot. A capture taken before fonts, data, or UI transitions settle can create misleading differences.

Small harmless differences keep failing
First stabilize the environment and remove known volatile content with a narrow stylesheet rule. If noise remains, consider a documented diff threshold, understanding that loosening it can make small regressions less visible.
Frequently asked questions
Can Playwright replace BackstopJS for full-page scenarios?
It can provide browser capture and screenshot assertions, but you need to author the tests and scenario coverage that suit your pages. Whether it replaces BackstopJS’s workflow depends on how much you rely on its scenario configuration and report-and-approve process.
Is BackstopJS abandoned?
The repository README currently requests a new maintainer or owner. That notice alone does not establish that the project is abandoned; check the repository for its current status before adopting or migrating.
