For production use, the key choices are how the agent connects, which IAM permissions it receives, and how the team monitors its actions. Documentation search and skill discovery do not require AWS credentials; API operations and scripts do.
What the AWS Agent Toolkit includes
AWS describes four components that work together: the AWS MCP Server, agent skills, plugins, and rules files. The managed server gives compatible agents a way to access AWS through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Skills package task-specific instructions and reference materials; they can be discovered at runtime through the server or installed locally. Plugins bundle server configuration with a selected set of skills for a one-install setup. Rules files give agents persistent, project-level instructions and guardrails. Amazon Web Services’ Agent Toolkit overview explains the components.

The toolkit is intended to help coding agents build, deploy, and manage AWS applications using current documentation and guided procedures. AWS lists Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Kiro as compatible MCP clients. Plugin support is described for Claude Code and Codex; Kiro connects directly and does not require a plugin. Client support and setup routes can change, so consult the current AWS quick-start for the client you use.
Choose a connection and setup path
There is no universal setup route: choose based on the client’s capabilities and how your organization manages configuration and credentials.

| Route | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Install a plugin | A supported client where you want bundled server configuration and selected skills. | AWS calls this the fastest setup path for supported clients. The quick-start gives Codex instructions to add the AWS marketplace and install the aws-core plugin, and provides a separate command for Claude Code. Check the current quick-start for exact client steps. |
| Configure MCP directly | A client that supports remote MCP connections, including Kiro or another compatible client. | Kiro’s documented route is direct MCP configuration, with skills installed separately. Other compatible clients can also use direct server configuration. |
| Use the AWS CLI setup wizard | A team that prefers CLI-managed setup and skill operations. | AWS’s quick-start states AWS CLI 2.35.0 or later as the prerequisite for the wizard. The CLI reference search result showed version 2.37.9 at research time and commands including add-skill, check-skill-updates, list-available-skills, and update-skill; verify current versions and command syntax in the AWS CLI command reference. |
Before rollout, decide where client configuration will live, how credentials will be provided, and whether skills should be installed locally or discovered as needed. These choices affect deployment and maintenance, but do not change the principle that AWS permissions come from the identity used for the operation.
Separate documentation discovery from AWS operations
AWS says credentials are not needed to search documentation or discover skills. Credentials and authorization are needed when an agent invokes tools that make AWS API calls or run scripts. This distinction lets a team use the toolkit for read-only guidance without automatically granting access to its accounts. AWS’s authentication documentation describes the credential requirement.

AWS’s quick-start illustrates the natural-language interface with prompts such as “What AWS Regions are available?”, “What AWS services should I use to build a serverless API?”, and “Help me troubleshoot why my CloudFormation deployment failed.” These are AWS documentation examples, not guarantees that every prompt is answered solely from documentation: a request that triggers an API operation or script requires credentials and must be authorized.

Choose an authentication method
AWS documents two routes: SigV4 credentials through the MCP Proxy for AWS, or OAuth 2.1 through AWS Sign-in for compatible clients. The right choice depends on client support, interactive versus headless use, and how the organization handles tokens.

| Method | How it works | Documented token handling |
|---|---|---|
| SigV4 through the MCP Proxy for AWS | Requests are signed using the AWS identity credentials available to the proxy path. | Token lifetimes are not applicable in the same way as the documented OAuth flow; configure and protect the underlying credentials according to your organization’s AWS identity practices. |
| OAuth 2.1 through AWS Sign-in | Compatible clients authenticate through AWS Sign-in. | AWS documents one-hour access tokens. For interactive access, refresh tokens last up to 12 hours. For client-credentials access, access tokens last one hour and AWS Sign-in does not issue a refresh token. These are values in AWS’s documented guide at research time; check the live OAuth setup guide for current details. |
For a headless workflow, confirm that the chosen client and authentication flow support the required token renewal behavior; do not assume the interactive refresh-token flow applies to client credentials.
Constrain actions with IAM
The server uses the customer’s existing identity and permissions rather than a separate set of MCP-specific IAM actions. In the documented SigV4 path, the server authenticates a request, adds the global context keys aws:ViaAWSMCPService and aws:CalledViaAWSMCP, forwards it, and the target AWS service authorizes it under the caller’s existing IAM policies. AWS describes the server as a stateless proxy whose operations are governed by the IAM identity. See the AWS IAM guidance for the Agent Toolkit.

Build the boundary around the tasks the agent must perform, not a broad account-wide role. As Amazon Web Services puts it in the Agent Toolkit for AWS user guide, “We recommend scoping down IAM roles to the minimum permissions that your agent needs to perform its task.” The documented context keys can help policies distinguish server-mediated actions from direct API calls; teams can use them in IAM policies or service control policies for additional controls.

- Identify the specific AWS services and actions the agent needs for its assigned tasks.
- Grant only those permissions to the identity used by the agent, and keep production and development boundaries explicit.
- Consider the documented context keys where policy should treat MCP-mediated calls differently from direct calls.
- Test that required tasks succeed and unrelated or disallowed actions fail before broad deployment.
Monitor activity and retain an audit trail
AWS says the MCP Server automatically publishes metrics to CloudWatch at no additional cost. Metrics support service and activity monitoring. CloudTrail captures API calls and related events, which can help identify the users or accounts making calls, source IP addresses, and when calls occurred. CloudTrail therefore serves a different purpose: audit visibility into API events. Review AWS’s monitoring and logging documentation for metric details and your account’s logging configuration.

In practice, use CloudWatch to observe service activity and CloudTrail to investigate API events. Confirm the relevant account-level CloudTrail configuration and retention meet your organization’s audit needs; the existence of the toolkit’s metrics does not itself establish that every account has the logging setup it requires.
Understand the cost boundary
AWS states that the Agent Toolkit is available at no additional charge. That does not make agent-driven infrastructure free: AWS resources the agent provisions or interacts with are billed at standard AWS rates, with actual spend depending on the services and usage. See AWS’s pricing information.
