A sale badge is not proof of a bargain. These six checks can help you separate a useful discount from a purchase you would not otherwise make.
1. Start with a list of things you already need
Write down planned purchases before browsing. That gives you a clear reason to consider an item and makes it easier to ignore products that look tempting only because they are on sale. Kiplinger recommends planning purchases and avoiding impulse buys (Kiplinger).

2. How do I check Amazon price history?
Open the product page and look for Amazon’s Price History feature, if it is available for that item. Amazon says the feature provides up to 365 days of pricing insights for hundreds of millions of products; that is Amazon’s description of its own feature, not a guarantee that every product has a complete history (Amazon).
Consumer Reports also points shoppers to Keepa and CamelCamelCamel for Amazon price history (Consumer Reports). Check coverage for the specific item and compare the dates and prices shown. A missing or short history does not establish that the current price is unusually low.

3. Compare today’s price with the item’s past prices
Look at the actual price trend rather than relying on a crossed-out price, discount badge, or countdown. Consumer Reports warns that a retailer may lower a price before Prime Day and then restore that same price during the event while presenting it as a discount (Consumer Reports).
Ask whether the current price is meaningfully below what the item has recently cost. A displayed percentage off may use a reference price that does not tell you whether the offer beats prices shoppers could already find.
4. Compare the exact product across current offers
When you find another offer, make sure it is for the same item—not merely something in the same category. Match the model number, size, capacity, color or configuration, and any included accessories. Then compare the total price and terms:
- Item price plus shipping or other unavoidable charges
- Seller and delivery estimate
- Return window and conditions
- Whether the listing is for the exact variant you intended to buy
Consumer Reports describes discounts across a range of categories, but a category-wide comparison cannot establish that two specific listings are equivalent (Consumer Reports).
5. Read the product details and reviews before paying
Confirm the listing’s model and variant against the product you planned to purchase. Read the specifications and reviews with that match in mind; do not assume that similar names mean identical features or that reviews for one configuration apply to another. Urgency messaging is not a substitute for checking what is actually in the listing.
6. Set a buy price—and walk away if it is not met
Decide in advance what the item is worth to you, based on its features and the prices you have seen. Compare that amount with the checkout total, including shipping and any membership cost that is relevant to accessing the offer. If the price does not meet your limit, wait or skip it. A discount on something you did not plan to buy is not savings.

Should I buy now or wait?
Use your planned purchase, price history, and buy price to make the decision—not the event label. No cited source establishes that Prime Day always has the lowest annual price or that a particular offer is a good deal. Event dates also change: Consumer Reports says Prime Day 2026 ran June 23–26 and Prime Big Deal Days 2026 ran October 6–7 (Consumer Reports; Consumer Reports). Treat those dates as past events, not as a schedule for a future sale.
