If you want the Avira icon gone, first decide whether you want to keep using Avira. Removing the app is different from hiding its menu bar icon: Avira’s support instructions explain how to uninstall Avira Security for Mac, but do not document a separate hide-icon setting. Apple’s menu bar controls apply to macOS items and Control Center icons, not necessarily an app-owned Avira icon.
Can you hide the Avira menu bar icon without uninstalling Avira?
Avira’s support instructions cited here do not establish whether a particular release offers an in-app option to hide its menu bar icon. Apple’s built-in menu bar instructions cover items added through System Settings and Control Center; they are not documented as a way to hide an app-owned Avira status icon.

If the icon is an Apple-provided control, open System Settings → Menu Bar and deselect the relevant item, or drag a Control Center item off the menu bar. If you are certain the icon belongs to Avira, these Apple controls may not apply. To remove Avira through the documented procedure, uninstall the app.

Avira’s standard instructions are to move the app from Applications to the Bin, let its uninstaller finish, and then empty the Bin. If Avira is open, quit it before starting; Apple recommends closing an app before uninstalling it.

- Open Applications: In Finder, choose Go → Applications from the menu bar.
- Start the removal: Drag Avira to the Bin. Avira says its uninstaller starts automatically.
- Finish the uninstaller: Click Finish when the application has been uninstalled.
- Erase the item: Empty the Bin to permanently erase the item.
Avira describes this as working like uninstalling any other application. Apple notes that an app’s own uninstaller is the best way to remove associated login items, extensions, or other data stored elsewhere.
What to do if Avira will not uninstall
Legacy Avira Antivirus for Mac: try the documented Terminal fallback
Avira documents this command for a rare case in which Avira Antivirus for Mac can no longer be conventionally uninstalled after an operating-system update. It is a fallback for that legacy product and failure condition, not the routine method for Avira Security for Mac.

- In Finder, choose Go → Utilities, then open Terminal.
- Run the following command:
/Applications/Utilities/Avira-Uninstall.app/Contents/MacOS/Avira-UninstallAvira says this removes Avira Antivirus for Mac completely. Do not use this command as a general-purpose removal method for a different Avira product or version.
Leftover antivirus files after a failed removal
Avira describes a separate cleanup remedy for cases where its uninstaller was moved to the Trash but the program did not uninstall correctly and antivirus files remain running. Its instructions use an attached Avira_Uninstaller.zip archive:

- Download and unpack the archive from Avira’s support article.
- Right-click
Avira.Uninstall.commandand choose Open. - Enter your credentials when Terminal opens.
This is a remedy for the described failed-removal situation, not an extra step in the standard uninstall.
If macOS says Avira is still in use
Make sure Avira is not open and try again. If macOS still reports that the app is in use, Apple advises restarting the Mac or starting it in Safe Mode before retrying.

What uninstalling Avira does not do
- It does not cancel a subscription. Apple says deleting or uninstalling an app does not cancel a subscription purchased with it. Manage any Avira subscription separately.
- It does not delete files you created. Apple says documents and other files created with an app are not removed simply by uninstalling that app.
When the instructions do not match your Mac
The Avira support pages cited here do not identify the Avira or macOS versions covered, and they do not confirm whether a current release has an option to hide its menu bar icon while keeping the app. If the interface differs, consult Avira support for your exact product version rather than improvising Terminal commands.
