Automobile safety systems are technologies and vehicle structures that help prevent crashes, reduce their severity, or protect people during and after a collision. Some help drivers maintain control or avoid hazards; others warn or intervene when a crash may be imminent; seat belts, airbags and structural features help protect occupants in a crash.
How automobile safety systems work across a crash
A useful way to understand these systems is to consider when they act: before a crash, as a collision becomes imminent, during impact, or after impact. The active-versus-passive distinction is another practical guide, not a complete engineering taxonomy. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) describes active systems as helping a driver avoid a crash and passive systems as reducing injuries during or after one (NHTSA: Introduction: Passive Versus Active).

| When | What the system does | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Before a crash | Helps the driver maintain control, see hazards, or avoid a collision | Anti-lock braking (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, tire-pressure monitoring, adaptive headlamps, and some driver-assistance features |
| When a crash may be imminent | Warns the driver or intervenes in vehicle control | Forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian automatic emergency braking |
| During impact | Restrains occupants or manages crash forces | Seat belts, belt pretensioners and load limiters, airbags, child restraints, safety cages, and crush zones |
| After impact | May help get crash information to emergency responders | Automatic crash notification that can transmit crash information and location |
A feature may contribute at more than one point in this sequence. Its actual function matters more than its marketing label.
Active systems: helping avoid a crash
Active safety covers systems intended to help avoid a crash. Some support braking, steering, traction, or visibility; others alert the driver to a hazard or take a limited action. A warning tells the driver to respond. An intervention feature, such as automatic emergency braking, may act on the vehicle. The available equipment and its behavior depend on the particular vehicle.

Driver assistance is not the same as self-driving
NHTSA describes Level 0 assistance as momentary, Level 1 as continuous assistance with either steering or acceleration and braking, and Level 2 as continuous assistance with both. At Levels 0–2, the driver remains fully engaged and responsible for driving. NHTSA says Level 3–5 technologies are not available for consumer purchase on today’s vehicles; this is NHTSA’s consumer-facing description, not a claim that vehicle technology or availability can never change. See NHTSA’s driver-assistance guidance for its descriptions and current information.
Electronic stability control has limits
ESC can help a driver maintain control, but it cannot keep a vehicle on the road if its speed is too high for the conditions. It does not cancel the need to drive at a safe speed or account for every road hazard (NHTSA: Car Safety Ratings).

Passive systems: protecting occupants in a crash
Seat belts, airbags and the vehicle’s structure work to reduce injury during a collision. Seat belts restrain occupants; pretensioners can tighten a belt in a crash, while load limiters manage the force placed on the occupant. Airbags provide additional protection, and the passenger compartment’s safety cage and crush zones are structural parts of occupant protection. NHTSA’s overview of vehicle safety features includes these kinds of equipment (NHTSA: Your Vehicle’s Safety Features).
Airbags supplement seat belts
Airbags are designed to work with seat belts, not replace them. Seating position also matters: NHTSA advises that children under 13 ride in the back seat and that a rear-facing child seat should never be placed in front of an active airbag. If an airbag has deployed, NHTSA advises having it replaced promptly through an authorized repair center before driving the vehicle again. Details are in NHTSA’s air-bag guidance.

Child restraints must suit the child and vehicle
A child restraint, including a car seat or booster seat, must be appropriate for the child and compatible with the vehicle. Follow both the restraint’s instructions and the vehicle owner’s manual for selection and installation. NHTSA provides further information in its glossary of highway safety terms and vehicle safety features overview.

There is no single equipment list that applies to every automobile. Feature names and availability can differ by manufacturer, model, trim, and model year; a feature may be standard on one version and optional or unavailable on another. Check the owner’s manual to understand what a system in your car does and how to use it. As NHTSA advises, “Be sure to review your vehicle’s owner’s manual for more information on your vehicle’s technology and safety features.” For ratings information, search the specific vehicle on NHTSA’s Car Safety Ratings site.

What the safety figures show—and what they do not
NHTSA reports that frontal airbags have saved more than 50,000 lives over a 30-year period; its statement does not specify calendar endpoints for that period (NHTSA: Vehicle Air Bags and Injury Prevention). NHTSA’s estimates for 2017 attribute 14,955 lives saved to seat belts and say 2,549 additional lives could have been saved if people had been wearing belts (NHTSA: Seat Belt Safety). These figures describe the reported benefits of particular protections; they are not a guarantee of an individual’s outcome or a ranking of every safety system.
