A dependable automatic WordPress backup covers both the site’s files and its database, keeps recent copies somewhere beyond the web server, and gives you a restore route you understand before you need it. Start by checking what your host already provides; add a plugin only if the host’s coverage, schedule, retention, or restore options do not meet your needs.
What a complete WordPress backup must include
A typical WordPress site backup has two separate parts: the database and the files. Downloading the site directory alone usually does not capture the database, where posts, comments, links, and other site data are stored. The WordPress handbook explains the distinction and the usual backup and restore sequence in its backup guide.

Database
Back up the database as well as the files. A database export may be saved in formats such as .sql, .gz, or .bz2; restoring the site’s data requires importing that export.
Files
Files include WordPress core, themes, plugins, uploads, configuration, and custom code. Pay particular attention to wp-content and wp-config.php. WordPress also identifies .htaccess and other files in the WordPress directory as relevant to file backups; see its file backup guide. A backup tool may exclude caches or temporary directories, or handle core files differently, so confirm its actual scope rather than assuming it captures everything.

How often should you back up?
Choose a schedule based on how often the site changes and how much recent data you can afford to lose. The WordPress handbook suggests weekly database backups for smaller sites with fewer posts and daily backups for high-activity sites. These are starting points, not a universal service-level rule. The handbook frames the decision around publishing frequency and how the owner would feel about losing recent posts; its guidance was last updated June 4, 2026.
Match the interval to site activity
- Less active site: A weekly database backup may be a reasonable starting schedule when updates are infrequent and losing several days of changes would be acceptable.
- Frequently updated site: Consider daily backups when posts and other database changes happen often.
- Store, membership, or booking site: Database changes can include orders, registrations, bookings, and account updates—not just published posts. Decide how much transaction or user data could be lost between snapshots, then choose a tool and cadence that address that risk. The official weekly/daily suggestions do not establish one universal schedule for these sites.
Check your host’s backup and restore options first
Many hosting control panels have backup settings, but the available controls vary by provider. Learn WordPress demonstrates host controls for on-demand backups and restores while noting that interfaces differ in its backups lesson.

- Whether they run on a schedule, and how often the schedule can run.
- How many restore points are retained and where copies are stored.
- Whether you can start a restore yourself or must contact support.
- Whether the restore process can be used if you cannot sign in to WordPress.
If the host covers both parts of the site, retains enough history, and offers a clear restore path, its system may be all you need. If not, a backup plugin is one way to fill the gaps.

Choose a backup method and verify its limits
A host backup system and a plugin are different routes to the same goal. Learn WordPress’s plugin example lets users select database and file coverage, set a schedule and retention count, and choose a storage destination. Before relying on either method, check what the current plan and software version actually include.
What to compare
- Coverage: Does it include the database and the files you need, including uploads, configuration, themes, and plugins?
- Schedule: How frequently can it run, and is that frequent enough for the site’s changing data?
- Retention and destination: How many copies are kept, and are they stored independently of the web server?
- Restore access: Can you restore without access to
wp-admin, and is the process clear? - Compatibility: Does it support your WordPress setup, including multisite or WooCommerce if applicable?
- Limits: Check storage allowances, retention restrictions, feature tiers, and any restore limitations for your host or plugin plan.
Plugin examples and current listing claims
The WordPress.org UpdraftPlus listing describes manual and scheduled backups and names destinations including Dropbox, Google Drive, and Amazon S3-compatible storage. It identifies some other destinations as paid-version options. Verify the current plugin version, compatibility, feature tier, and destination support before configuring it.

The WordPress.org Jetpack VaultPress Backup listing describes cloud backups and one-click restores. The listing says use requires a paid Jetpack plan that includes Backup, describes daily and real-time plan behavior, and states that the plugin does not currently support WordPress multisite. These are statements from the product listing, not independent comparative test results.
Set retention and keep a copy off the server
The WordPress handbook recommends keeping 3–5 recent backups in different locations, such as a host copy, a cloud-storage copy, and one downloaded to a local computer. It also recommends occasionally making a manual copy of automatic backups to check that the process is working. See the handbook’s backup recommendations.
At least one copy outside the web server is a practical safeguard: a server outage or compromised hosting account could make an on-server backup unavailable along with the site. A downloaded copy on an external drive is an optional additional location, not a requirement if your existing off-site storage meets your needs. Keep credentials and access to backup storage secure, and confirm that the copy is complete and usable.
Know how you would restore the site
Backups are useful only if you can restore them. WordPress’s typical sequence is to back up the database first and then the files; for restoration, restore the files first and then import the database. If database credentials change during a migration, wp-config.php may need to be updated. The exact controls and steps depend on your host or backup tool.

- Confirm both parts are available: Identify the corresponding file backup and database export for the restore point you intend to use.
- Test the recovery path where practical: Use a staging environment or follow the provider’s instructions to verify that the backup can be restored. WordPress’s cited guidance does not set a universal test interval or exact test procedure.
- Keep access outside the site: Make sure you know how to reach the backup and restore controls if WordPress itself or its administration area is unavailable.
