For most travel and everyday wear, quartz is the practical choice if you want dependable timekeeping with little attention. An automatic suits someone who enjoys a self-winding mechanical movement and wears the same watch regularly, but is comfortable winding or resetting it after it stops and following its service guidance.
How quartz and automatic watches work
Quartz: a crystal keeps time
A quartz watch uses an electronically stimulated quartz crystal as its time base. Its circuit turns the crystal’s stable oscillations into regular impulses that move the hands, as Swatch’s technical explanation describes. Quartz watches use electrical power; the specific model may rely on a battery, solar charging, or another power arrangement.

Automatic: wrist motion winds a spring
An automatic watch is mechanical. A rotor turns with wrist motion and winds the mainspring, which stores energy to run the movement. Seiko explains the rotor-and-mainspring mechanism, while Swatch calls its automatic watch “a self winding mechanical watch.” If the watch is left unworn until its stored power runs out, it stops.
Which is more accurate?
Quartz is generally the more accurate option, but there is no single accuracy figure that applies to every quartz watch. Check the accuracy specification for the exact model. Mechanical watches’ daily rates can vary with use and environmental conditions; Grand Seiko’s mechanical-watch instructions give guidance for its movements, not a guarantee for all automatic watches. Longines also explains why automatic-watch accuracy should be understood in relation to the particular watch: Longines on automatic-watch accuracy.

What happens when you take the watch off?
Quartz
Quartz does not rely on wrist movement to wind a mechanical mainspring, so taking it off does not create that particular risk of the watch stopping. Its battery or charging system and condition still matter. For example, Patek Philippe says its quartz watches have a battery life of two to three years; that is the maker’s guidance, not a universal replacement interval. See Patek Philippe’s care recommendations and follow the instructions for the watch you own.
Automatic
An automatic can stop if it remains unworn longer than its model-specific power reserve. Patek Philippe states that its self-winding movements have a reserve of 38–48 hours, except for some specific models; Victorinox likewise gives 38–48 hours for its automatic watches, depending on model. These are maker-specific examples, not category-wide promises. Once stopped, the watch can be wound and reset according to its instructions. That is a normal convenience trade-off, not a defect.

Travel and daily use: choose for your habits
| What matters to you | Quartz | Automatic |
|---|---|---|
| Leave the watch off for several days | Does not need wrist motion to keep a mainspring wound; check the model’s battery or charging system. | May stop when unworn beyond its reserve; check the model’s stated reserve and restarting instructions. |
| Minimize timekeeping attention | Usually the easier fit if accuracy and low attention are priorities. | Requires regular wear or winding, and may need resetting after it stops. |
| Enjoy the mechanics | Uses an electronic time base rather than a self-winding mechanical movement. | Offers a rotor-wound mechanical movement for people who value that mechanism. |
| Plan upkeep | Battery and service guidance depend on the maker and model. | Power reserve and service guidance depend on the maker and model. |
Choose quartz if you rotate among watches, expect to leave one unworn during a trip, or want accurate timekeeping without regularly winding and resetting it. Choose an automatic if you expect to wear it consistently, value its mechanical movement, and accept the reserve and service routine for that specific model.
Check the actual watch, not just its movement type
Neither movement makes a watch automatically travel-ready. For a particular model, compare its stated water resistance, shock performance, legibility, time-zone functions, size, strap, and magnetic resistance. Magnetic resistance is a feature to verify rather than assume: ISO 764:2020 applies to magnetic-resistant watches designed to withstand daily magnetic fields, but the standard’s existence does not establish that a particular watch complies.

Keep watches away from strong magnetic sources as directed by their makers. Seiko India Support advises keeping its watches 10–15 cm from listed everyday magnetic devices; that is Seiko guidance, not a universal safe-distance rule. See Seiko’s mechanical-watch guidance and check the selected model’s specifications.

Published maintenance figures vary, so use them as examples of individual manufacturers’ advice rather than applying them to every watch. Victorinox says its automatic watches reach a full wind with 8–10 hours of wear per day, depending on the watch, and recommends a complete overhaul of its mechanical movements every 4–6 years. Patek Philippe recommends service through its official network every eight to ten years for its quartz and mechanical watches. Consult the relevant maker’s current instructions for your exact model; the figures above are not interchangeable service rules.
