For most Windows 11 users, leave the standard recommended driver-update path enabled. Windows Update automatically installs recommended drivers, including network-adapter drivers. Optional driver updates are different: Windows does not install them automatically, so you can review and choose whether to install them.
How Windows 11 handles network driver updates
Windows Update regularly checks for updates and can install recommended drivers for connected hardware, including network adapters. Microsoft describes this as the normal driver-update path in its driver-update guidance. The updates come through participating hardware partners; available details and offers vary by provider, and a particular driver may not appear in Windows Update or on Microsoft.com.

This does not mean every available network driver is installed automatically. Optional drivers require your review and selection. Microsoft’s separate driver explainer applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2; the general recommendation to use Windows Update is not a guarantee that every update improves every adapter or network setup.

Review an optional network driver
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand the driver updates section if it appears. Check whether a listed driver matches your network adapter and the issue you are addressing.
- Select only the relevant driver, then choose Download and install.
- Restart Windows after installation, as Microsoft advises.
If no driver update is listed, that does not establish that a newer compatible driver exists or that Windows Update can offer it.
If a network problem starts after an update
If Wi-Fi or Ethernet stops working, becomes unstable, or otherwise behaves differently after a driver update, use Windows’ built-in recovery options before seeking a replacement adapter. Microsoft documents updating, reinstalling, and rolling back drivers through Device Manager in its Device Manager driver guidance.

- Roll back: In Device Manager, open the network adapter’s properties and use the driver rollback option if available. This returns to a recently installed driver; the option may not be available for every device or update.
- Reinstall: Device Manager can be used to uninstall the network adapter driver and then reinstall it. Make sure you have a way to restore network access if the adapter disconnects during the process.
- Find a compatible driver: If Windows Update does not offer a suitable driver, Microsoft recommends checking the hardware manufacturer’s official support site for a driver compatible with your installed Windows version.
Driver security and download sources
Windows Driver Policy relies on kernel Code Integrity and cryptographic signing. If Windows blocks a driver, Microsoft’s guidance is to check Windows Update for an updated driver or visit the manufacturer’s official support page. Avoid third-party driver-download sites: use Windows Update or the official support page for the PC or network-adapter manufacturer.

A specific compatibility problem can justify investigating a driver update or using rollback, but the general guidance does not establish that disabling automatic recommended driver updates prevents problems. For ordinary use, keep the recommended path enabled and treat optional network drivers as a deliberate choice. If a managed work or school PC has a different update policy, ask its administrator.
