Automatic content recognition (ACR) identifies media by analyzing samples of its audio or video and matching a resulting fingerprint to known content. Some systems instead—or as well—detect a watermark embedded in the media. On a smart TV, ACR can support viewing features, measurement, or advertising; in broadcast standards, it can help a receiver recover related content. Those are different applications, and what a particular device collects or shares depends on its implementation.
How automatic content recognition works
With fingerprinting, a device or service samples or processes incoming audio or video and derives a compact signature. It compares that signature with a reference database or recognition service; a match can identify a program, advertisement, or other media. The process is sometimes likened to music-recognition apps, but exactly what is sampled, how often, and where matching occurs varies by product.

Watermarking works differently. Identifying information is embedded in the media signal before it reaches the receiving device, which detects that information rather than deriving a fingerprint from the content. Both methods recognize content, but they are not interchangeable descriptions of how a system operates. ATSC A/336 allows either watermarking or fingerprinting for its specified content-recovery scenario.

Smart TVs
Some smart-TV platforms use ACR to identify viewed content. Depending on the service and user choices, related information may support viewing history, recommendations, audience analysis, measurement, or advertising. It is not safe to assume that every system captures screenshots or sends raw audio or video: for example, LG describes its ACR as extracting audio fingerprints through the TV’s internal audio processor rather than collecting screenshots or screen recordings. That is LG’s description of its service, not a universal rule.

Samsung says its optional ACR generates unique signatures and that associated information may include viewing history, TV identifiers, and IP address. LG describes ACR as optional and off by default, with settings and applicable agreements affecting its use; it also says interest-based and cross-device advertising require separate applicable consent. These statements describe the manufacturers’ own services. Settings, defaults, agreements, and data practices can vary by model and market. See Samsung’s ACR information and settings guidance and LG’s privacy information.
Broadcast content recovery
ACR also appears in a standards-defined broadcast use that is distinct from smart-TV viewing analytics or advertising. ATSC A/336 describes a receiver that gets uncompressed audio and video over HDMI from a set-top box but lacks the full broadcast signaling or alternate choices. The receiver can identify the content through a watermark or fingerprint, then use broadband to retrieve associated content. The ATSC page lists A/336:2026-04, approved April 14, 2026, as the current version and says it is referenced by A/300:2026-04. This describes a specific technical standard, not what every TV does. Read the ATSC A/336 standard page.

What ACR can mean for privacy
ACR can make viewing activity visible to a TV platform or a related service. To understand the implications for a particular set, check what it samples, which identifiers are associated with recognition, where information is sent, how long it is retained, and whether it is used or shared for measurement or advertising. Manufacturer disclosures and controls are specific to products, markets, and agreements.
A 2024 peer-reviewed study audited ACR clients and servers on tested Samsung and LG TVs in UK and US setups. It reported ACR activity across tested viewing modes, differences between the two markets, and that opting out stopped traffic to ACR servers in its test. That finding is limited to the devices and conditions studied; it does not establish that opting out stops all data collection on every TV. Read the 2024 study.

At FTC PrivacyCon in 2018, Consumer Reports policy counsel described a five-model assessment in which tested smart TVs used ACR and other methods to recognize viewed content. The presentation also discussed possible targeted advertising on other devices in a home network. It reported that 43% of respondents in a Consumer Reports reader poll did not know their smart TVs transmitted data to manufacturers and business partners. That is a result from the poll described at the event, not a representative estimate of all TV owners. See the FTC PrivacyCon 2018 materials.
How to assess ACR on your TV
There is no single ACR setting or menu path across brands and models. Check the privacy notice and settings on the specific TV, and review any applicable viewing, data, or advertising agreements. Consider these questions:

- Does the system use audio fingerprinting, video fingerprinting, watermark detection, or a combination?
- Which sources can it recognize: built-in apps, broadcast, HDMI inputs, or other content?
- What purpose is stated, such as recommendations, measurement, content recovery, or advertising?
- What information and identifiers are collected, who receives them, and how is the information retained or reused?
- Is ACR enabled by default, and does turning it off also require withdrawing from a separate agreement?
- Do the policy and controls apply to your TV model, software version, and country?
Turning off ACR is not the same as disabling every connected-TV service or data flow. Treat the setting as a control over the ACR feature described by that manufacturer, and consult the device’s current privacy information for other services.

ACR is a category, not one universal feature
The term describes a family of content-recognition techniques, not one standardized consumer product or uniform privacy practice. Fingerprinting and watermarking work differently; smart-TV analytics and ATSC content recovery serve different purposes. ACR’s coverage, settings, and data handling therefore need to be evaluated for the specific implementation rather than inferred from the label alone.
