Why Highly Educated Workers Are Automating Tasks—and What It Means for Their Jobs

Some highly educated workers are adopting generative AI at work and expect it to save time. But the evidence does not show that “the smartest people” are collectively making their jobs obsolete—or that workers broadly love the change. It points to something more complicated: AI is changing tasks, sometimes speeding up work, while job losses, measurable productivity gains and worker enthusiasm remain far from universal.

What the numbers say about who is using AI at work

A 2025 survey of U.S. workers, reported by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in 2026, found higher recent generative-AI use among workers with more formal education. Education is not a measure of who is “smartest,” however, and these figures describe use by education group—not a global ranking of workers or proof that AI has displaced them.

Education group Used generative AI in the prior month
Graduate degree 43% of U.S. workers in this group, Federal Reserve survey of 2025 reported in 2026
Bachelor’s degree 34% of U.S. workers in this group, Federal Reserve survey of 2025 reported in 2026
High school degree or less 10% of U.S. workers in this group, Federal Reserve survey of 2025 reported in 2026

The same Federal Reserve report found that 25% of workers had used AI at work in the prior month, while 44% agreed that generative AI would save time in their job. The larger share expecting time savings signals perceived potential, not verified productivity: expecting to save time is different from having done so, and time saved is not automatically converted into more output, higher pay or a shorter workday.

Is AI taking jobs or changing tasks?

For most of the evidence available, the more useful question is what happens to particular tasks—not whether an entire occupation vanishes. AI can automate some duties, create others, or change how workers carry out the same job. The OECD’s 2023 report, based on a 2022 worker survey, found that university-educated AI users were more likely than users without university education to report both task automation and task creation. Managers and professionals were among workers likely to report AI-created tasks in the sectors studied.

That distinction matters. If AI handles one routine activity, a worker may spend more time on review, communication or another responsibility. Whether this makes the worker more valuable depends on whether the organization needs those other tasks, whether the worker can take them on, and who benefits from the time released. Task automation alone does not establish that a job has become obsolete.

Task replacement is more commonly reported than employment change in one firm survey

An empirical study based on a U.S. Census Bureau business survey reported that about 27% of AI-using firms had replaced tasks, while about 5% reported employment change. These are estimates from the 2023–24 survey reported in an Economics Letters paper published in 2024. They are not a current universal rate, a forecast, or a count of workers displaced; they illustrate that firms can change work without reporting an employment change.

TRALT Office Chair Ergonomic Desk Chair with Lumbar Support Black, 1
  • High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
  • Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
  • Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
  • Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
  • Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching

Why workers may welcome AI and still worry about it

The Federal Reserve report found that workers who used generative AI were more likely to report benefits and to believe it could improve their careers. That pattern is consistent with users seeing ways the technology helps them, but it does not prove that using AI caused more positive views: people who choose to use it may differ from those who do not.

There is also a difference between welcoming help with a task and welcoming the conditions that follow. In the OECD’s 2022 worker survey, reported in 2023, many AI users in finance and manufacturing said AI had increased their work pace. Some also reported more control over the order of their tasks, while others reported less. A worker might value relief from repetitive work yet dislike a faster workload or reduced autonomy.

The OECD did not ask whether workers felt a faster pace meant excessive workload or outweighed the positive effects. These responses therefore show reported changes in pace and task control, not whether workers enjoyed them overall.

Time savings are not yet the same as measured productivity

The International Labour Organization’s review, published June 1, 2026, draws on experiments, firm-level data, platform studies, and representative worker and firm surveys in Australia, Denmark, Germany, Korea, Kuwait, the United Kingdom and the United States. It finds that productivity gains are real but uneven and often unverified. In the evidence it reviewed, worker-reported time savings of a few percent of working hours had not yet translated into higher measured output, earnings or employment.

That is not proof that AI never improves productivity. It is a reason to distinguish what workers say they save from what organizations have measured—and to ask what happens to the saved time. It may be used for more work, for different work, or in ways that do not show up as higher output or earnings.

How serious is the risk of replacement?

In the Federal Reserve’s 2025 U.S. worker survey, reported in 2026, 20% of workers agreed that AI would replace their job. That is a measure of concern, not a count of jobs actually lost. A worker’s exposure to AI, an employer’s adoption of AI, automation of a task and elimination of a position are different stages; evidence for one does not establish the next.

Workers’ concern is not just hypothetical sentiment. An IZA Institute of Labor Economics survey experiment with almost 6,000 participants, described in a 2024 discussion paper and with journal publication reported in 2025, found that respondents were willing to accept a salary reduction equivalent to almost 20% of median annual gross wage in exchange for a 10-percentage-point lower automation risk. This was a stated preference in an experiment, not observed wage behavior—and it does not show that workers enjoy automation.

Labor economics describes competing effects. Automation can lower costs and raise productivity, but it can also displace workers from tasks and reduce their employment opportunities. The balance depends on which tasks are automated, whether new tasks emerge, how widely firms adopt the technology, how organizations redesign work and how gains are shared. An Annual Review of Economics framework discussed in 2024 emphasizes that there is no single outcome implied by the technology alone.

What to watch in your own workplace

For workers trying to judge whether automation is helping or putting a role at risk, look beyond whether a tool can perform a task. The practical signs are what the employer does with that capability and how the work changes.

  • Which tasks change? Note whether AI takes on repetitive work, supports complex or judgment-heavy work, or creates new responsibilities such as checking outputs.
  • What changes for the role? Distinguish task automation or task creation from reduced hours, changed staffing or actual job loss.
  • Who captures the time? Ask whether saved time goes to higher-value work, additional workload, shorter hours or some other outcome.
  • How do pace and control shift? A faster workflow is not necessarily a better one if workload rises or workers lose influence over how they sequence tasks.
  • Can workers move into the new work? Training and organizational design affect whether employees can take on tasks that AI does not handle.
  • What is measured? Separate self-reported time savings from verified changes in output, earnings or employment.

These are not just individual questions. They are also tests of whether an employer is using automation to augment workers, intensify work or reduce the need for particular roles.
