How automated time tracking works
Unlike a conventional timer that starts and stops when you tell it to, an automated tracker can record activity such as active applications, windows, websites, or page titles while you work. You then review the captured timeline and decide what should become a time entry. Some products also automate timer behavior based on the active app or window; that is related to, but different from, reviewing a record of activity.

Background capture is a record of computer activity, not proof that every recorded minute was focused work. A tracker may capture an app or page without knowing which client, project, or task it belongs to. Expect to check and categorize entries yourself.

What to check before relying on automatic capture
Whether it captures activity or creates entries
Check what happens after the tracker records activity. In Toggl’s documented workflow, you review the activity timeline and select items to turn into entries; capture does not by itself mean the software has assigned the right project. Timely describes Memory capture through its desktop apps, but the cited platform information does not establish that captured activity is automatically categorized perfectly. Treat review and classification as part of the workflow.
Which details it records
Activity records may be more specific than an application name. Toggl’s Timeline documentation describes app and window activity. Timely says Memory records active-app page titles and timestamps. If you work with sensitive client, health, financial, or personal information, consider whether those details could appear in captured activity and check the product’s current controls and policies.

Whether your device is supported
Automatic capture may require a desktop app rather than a browser-only setup. Timely documents Memory desktop apps for Mac and Windows and says its standalone Chrome Memory extension is no longer maintained. Toggl’s cited materials describe desktop apps; verify current operating-system availability and any plan restrictions before adopting it.
How much manual review your work requires
Background recording can reduce reliance on remembering to start a timer, but it adds a review step. Decide whether you are willing to inspect activity, discard irrelevant records, and assign projects or tasks. For client billing, compare the resulting entries against calendars, project records, or other work documentation before submitting them; the vendor pages do not establish perfect classification or billing accuracy.

Privacy: understand capture, storage, and syncing
Privacy descriptions should be read as vendor statements, not independent audits. Toggl’s product page says activity is stored on the device and is not shared until you convert it into time entries. Its support documentation qualifies that description: Timeline data can be stored locally and synced to Toggl’s servers. Do not assume all activity always remains on your device; check current settings and policy language.
Timely’s privacy page says Memory records active-app page titles and timestamps and describes its approach as private by design. That is Timely’s own description, not independent verification. The cited information does not independently settle who can access captured details under every plan or configuration, so review current access controls and privacy terms for your intended use.

How to choose
- Choose a review-first workflow if your priority is reconstructing the day from a timeline and selecting which activity becomes time entries.
- Check desktop requirements first if you need capture on a specific operating system or expect a browser extension to do the work.
- Evaluate data sensitivity if app, window, or page titles could reveal information you do not want recorded or synced.
- Plan for categorization if accurate project reporting or client billing depends on assigning activity correctly.
