For automating an existing Firefox session, start by asking whether the task can target Firefox’s exposed controls or must interact with what is visibly on screen. Use addressable UI elements when the target exposes them; use mouse and keyboard actions, images, or OCR when it does not. Choose a browser-automation approach only if it can attach to the session and browser state you need—this evidence does not establish which browser tools can do that. On Windows, Power Automate Desktop offers both UI-element and mouse/keyboard automation; AutoHotkey can send clicks to windows or controls; PyAutoGUI provides screen-coordinate mouse and keyboard control across major desktop platforms.
Choose based on what Firefox exposes
The practical distinction is not simply “browser automation versus mouse automation.” It is whether the target offers controls that a tool can identify, whether actions can be simulated, and whether the task truly requires physical mouse or keyboard input. The reader question concerns an existing Firefox session, but the available documentation does not establish that any particular browser-automation tool can attach to an already-open session. Verify that capability and the session requirements before choosing one.

- Addressable controls: Prefer UI elements or semantic selectors where the application exposes usable controls. This avoids fixed screen coordinates and image matching.
- Visible-only interface: If the application or remote desktop surface does not expose usable elements, use mouse and keyboard actions, image matching, or OCR as appropriate.
- Input constraints: Determine whether actions must physically move the pointer and operate the keyboard, or whether supported simulated actions are acceptable.
- Workflow preference: Choose a visual flow designer if you want to author a Windows desktop workflow without building it as a script; choose a scripting tool if code better suits the task.
How the main approaches differ
| Approach | Good fit | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Power Automate Desktop UI elements | Windows desktop flows where controls and windows can be identified. | Prefer selectors to fixed coordinates when usable elements are available. Some actions require the window in front; simulated execution is not supported for every UI element. Microsoft documents UI automation actions and physical and simulated desktop flows. |
| Power Automate Desktop mouse, keyboard, image, and OCR | Interfaces where ordinary UI elements cannot be accessed. | These methods rely more on visible presentation and input state than element selectors. Microsoft describes image or mouse/keyboard alternatives, and OCR where an image is not a practical reference. See the mouse and keyboard actions reference. |
| AutoHotkey ControlClick | Windows scripts that send mouse-button or wheel events to a window or control. | The function can specify a control identifier or position, but its documentation does not promise compatibility with every application. See the ControlClick reference. |
| PyAutoGUI | Python scripts for basic GUI interaction on Windows, macOS, and Linux. | Uses mouse and keyboard input with screen coordinates; also supports screenshots and image lookup. Its documented fail-safe raises an exception when the pointer reaches the screen’s upper-left corner. See the PyAutoGUI quickstart. |
| AutoIt | Windows scripts that need mouse movement and clicks. | The official function reference documents mouse click and related operations; the reviewed reference does not establish a broader comparative advantage. See the MouseClick reference. |
When to use UI elements instead of screen coordinates
If Firefox or the surface hosting it exposes usable UI elements, begin with those rather than fixed coordinates or image matching. Selectors identify controls by their properties instead of assuming a button will always appear at the same pixel location. That can make the automation less dependent on layout changes, although it does not guarantee that a workflow will remain reliable through every application change.
When elements cannot be accessed—for example, through an interface that presents only a remote or rendered surface—Microsoft points to image or mouse/keyboard approaches. OCR can help when there is no practical image reference. These techniques depend more heavily on what is visible: window placement, scaling, layout, and the current input state can affect whether an action reaches its target.

Physical versus simulated input in Power Automate Desktop
Power Automate Desktop distinguishes physical actions, which take control of the machine’s mouse and keyboard, from supported simulated actions, which execute programmatically. Simulation may avoid bringing the target window to the foreground, but it is not available for every UI element or action. Check the supported mode for the specific controls in the flow rather than assuming simulation applies throughout.
The physical and simulated flows documentation also states: “To prevent unauthorized access, Power Automate needs to run with the same or higher privileges as the applications it automates.” In practice, if the target application is elevated, run Power Automate Desktop with matching or higher privileges for relevant UI interactions.

Build safer mouse-and-keyboard automation
Power Automate Desktop’s mouse and keyboard actions include cursor movement, coordinates, click events, waits, and key sends. Use waits where the interface needs time to respond, and confirm the target state before sending input that depends on it. For PyAutoGUI, leave its documented fail-safe enabled unless you have a deliberate reason not to: moving the pointer to the upper-left corner triggers an exception that can stop the script. Its documentation also describes a configurable pause after calls.
Neither coordinates nor ControlClick should be treated as universally reliable. A control may not accept a particular event, and screen-based actions can miss when presentation or input state differs from what the automation expects. Prefer an element selector when the target exposes one; reserve visual and coordinate-based methods for cases where semantic access is unavailable or unsuitable.

A practical decision path for an existing Firefox session
- Confirm the session requirement. Decide whether the task must use the already-open Firefox session, including its current tabs, login state, or page state. Confirm that any browser-automation candidate can work with that session; the sources here do not verify a specific tool’s attachment capability.
- Check the target’s exposed controls. If the relevant controls are addressable, use UI elements or selectors. This is the best starting point for avoiding brittle screen coordinates.
- If controls are unavailable, choose a visual method. For a Windows visual flow, Power Automate Desktop can use images, mouse/keyboard actions, or OCR. For scripted desktop interaction, AutoHotkey ControlClick targets a window or control where accepted; PyAutoGUI uses screen coordinates and images across Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Check foreground and privilege requirements. Establish whether the window must be in front, whether simulated actions are supported for the chosen elements, and whether the automation needs matching or greater privileges than the target.
- Test recovery before unattended use. Check waits, focus changes, unexpected dialogs, and stop behavior. Keep PyAutoGUI’s fail-safe available so an operator can halt the script by moving the pointer to the upper-left corner.
