Neither mode is universally sharper or more reliable. The better choice depends on the subject, the camera and lens, and where you want focus to fall.
What is the difference between autofocus and manual focus?
With AF, the camera focuses on a subject. With MF, you turn the lens’s focus ring to set focus yourself. As Sony Electronics puts it in its α9-series support guidance, “Autofocus (AF) is the function of a camera to automatically focus on a subject.” The camera and lens determine which controls are available and how they behave, so check their manuals for model-specific instructions.

Some cameras also offer direct manual focus (DMF): AF first sets focus, then you can refine it manually. That makes DMF a useful middle ground when the camera gets close but does not select the exact detail you want.

Which focus mode should you use?
| Situation | Starting choice | Why and what to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Still subject | AF-S or single-shot AF | Focus is acquired and locked. If you recompose or the subject moves after focus locks, that focus may no longer be accurate. Names vary by camera system. |
| Subject moving toward, away from, or across the frame | AF-C or continuous AF, with tracking if available | Focus continues adjusting while active. Choose a suitable focus area, and check how your camera handles subject recognition and tracking. |
| Subject may move, but you are not sure | AF-A or automatic AF, where offered | Some cameras switch between single and continuous behavior based on detected movement. The feature and its behavior are system-specific. |
| Small close-up detail, or AF picks the wrong part | DMF to refine AF, or MF to place focus directly | Manual adjustment lets you target the intended plane of focus. Magnified viewing or focus peaking can help if your camera supports them. |
| Tripod scene or deliberate focus placement | MF, with magnification or peaking if available | Manual adjustment gives you direct control. Check focus at the intended aperture and working setup; peaking alone does not confirm that the detail you care about is sharp. |
How do AF-S, AF-C, and AF-A differ?
AF-S: focus once and lock
In Sony’s terminology, AF-S acquires focus and locks it. It is a sensible starting point for a subject that is not moving, but a locked focus can become stale if you or the subject shifts before the shot. Other manufacturers may use different labels or implementations.

AF-C: keep adjusting focus
Sony describes AF-C as continuing to focus while the shutter button is held halfway. Use continuous AF for moving subjects when your camera supports it. Tracking and focus-area settings can help keep the chosen subject under focus, but results depend on the scene and the specific camera.
AF-A: let the camera choose between behaviors
Where available, AF-A can switch between single and continuous focusing based on detected movement. This may suit an uncertain situation, but do not assume every camera offers it or makes the switch in the same way.

- This compact ruler allows you to determine if your lens is auto-focusing accurately as it should. It is an essential tool that is particularly useful when shooting with a shallow depth of field, where focusing should ideally be "spot on".
- You can use this ruler to determine how "off" the focusing is for a particular camera / lens combination and, on supported cameras, adjust the camera's auto-focus settings to resolve this
- On Nikon cameras, this feature is known as "AF Fine Tune". On Canon and Sony cameras, it's known as "AF Micro Adjustment". Please refer to your camera's instructions manual to see if this feature is present.

- Package Included: Lens Focus Calibration Card X 2
When does manual focus help most?
Close-ups and macro photography
At close distances, depth of field can be shallow, and the intended detail may occupy only a small part of the frame. AF can settle on the wrong edge or feature. Switch to MF to position focus yourself, or use DMF to adjust after AF has focused. Sony’s macro guidance describes these approaches alongside focusing aids; which aids are available depends on the camera body and lens.
Deliberate focus placement
MF can be useful whenever you want to choose the focus plane yourself, including a tripod scene. It makes the photographer responsible for the adjustment, so inspect the important detail rather than assuming the focus ring position is correct.

How can you judge focus while using MF?
Magnified view
Magnification enlarges part of the image on the camera display or viewfinder so you can inspect detail. Some cameras let you move the enlarged area to the part of the scene you want to check. The exact controls and available magnification vary by model. Canon’s EOS 1000D manual, for example, describes 5x and 10x magnified live view for manual focusing; that is a legacy-body example, not a claim about current cameras.
Focus peaking
Peaking highlights edges the camera identifies as in focus. Sony’s support guidance describes it as enhancing the outlines of in-focus areas during MF or DMF. Because peaking is an aid rather than a guarantee, verify the specific detail you intend to render sharp, using magnification when available.

What should you check before buying anything?
- Check whether your current camera offers the AF mode, subject tracking, magnification, or peaking you need.
- Confirm that a lens is compatible with your camera and supports the focus behavior you expect; features vary across bodies and lenses.
- Consider your actual subjects and workflow before looking at new equipment. The relevant need may be a compatible macro lens, a camera feature, or simply a different focus setting—not necessarily an upgrade.
- An external monitor or LCD loupe may help with manual-focus viewing, but first see whether your camera’s built-in display and focusing aids are adequate.
A simple way to choose in the moment
- For a stationary subject, start with single-shot AF if your camera offers it.
- For a moving subject, use continuous AF and enable tracking if it suits the scene and is available.
- If AF focuses on the wrong detail, switch to DMF to refine or MF to set focus directly.
- For careful manual placement, inspect the intended detail with magnification or peaking if your camera supports those aids.
- Make a test exposure and check the result when precise focus matters.
AF and MF are control choices, not guarantees of image quality. Autofocus performance depends on the camera, lens, focus mode, focus area, subject, and scene; manual focus depends on your viewing conditions and adjustment. Manufacturer guidance explains features and operation, but does not establish that one mode outperforms the other across all equipment.
