Start with its theme, text, and prompt controls; use templates or Advanced Customizations for Universal Login (ACUL) only when those controls cannot meet a specific design or logic need.
Why New Universal Login is the right starting point
Universal Login is Auth0’s primary hosted login experience, and Auth0 says active development is focused on it; Classic Login no longer receives updates. The hosted flow also keeps authentication pages on Auth0’s centralized service. Your application initiates the authorization request and handles the response, while routine login-page configuration can be changed without rebuilding the app. Auth0’s Universal Login overview and its customization guide explain the distinction.

That means changing the page’s branding does not require putting a password form in your application. Embedded or custom in-app login is a separate architectural choice, not the natural next step for a visual refresh.
Choose the lightest customization that meets the need
| Approach | Best for | Control and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| New Universal Login themes, text elements, and partials | Brand colors, logo, typography, button styling, wording, hints, messages, errors, or prompt-level content | Low to moderate control through Dashboard or API settings; preserves the hosted flow and is the recommended starting point. |
| New Universal Login page templates or ACUL | A concrete need for page-level layout changes, conditional rendering, dynamic content, or deeper presentation control | More control and implementation responsibility. Page templates require a custom domain; verify current feature availability before depending on ACUL. |
| Classic Login | A specific legacy or specialized requirement that the current Universal Login options cannot satisfy | Extensive HTML and JavaScript control, but Classic is no longer updated. Customized pages require ongoing tenant maintenance and introduce additional security and compatibility risks. |
| Embedded or custom in-app login | A strict interface or application constraint that genuinely requires an in-app authentication UI | Highest application-side control, but changes the architecture. Assess the applicable Auth0 security guidance before implementing it. |
Auth0 lists themes, text, partials, templates, and advanced customization as different levels of Universal Login control in its customization overview.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Customize New Universal Login in a practical sequence
- Confirm which experience is active. In the Auth0 Dashboard, go to Branding > Universal Login > Advanced Options and check whether the tenant uses New Universal Login or Classic Login. The options and customization methods differ between them. Auth0 describes the experiences in its Universal Login Experience documentation.
- Set the visual identity with Themes. In the Dashboard’s Universal Login customization controls, apply the product logo and brand choices such as colors, fonts, and button styling. Preview the result against the application’s real colors and contrast needs rather than relying on the logo alone.
- Replace generic wording with Text Elements. Edit visible labels, hints, instructions, error messages, and other copy so the language matches your product. Keep instructions concise and make errors tell users what they can do next.
- Add prompt-specific content with Partials. Use these for appropriate content associated with login or signup prompts without replacing the whole page structure.
- Use a template or ACUL only for a defined gap. If themes, text, and partials cannot satisfy a required layout or behavior, investigate page templates or ACUL. Templates require a custom domain, and ACUL availability or release stage can change; confirm current documentation and tenant eligibility before building around either.
- Keep the application on the normal authorization flow. Use the appropriate Auth0 SDK or authorization request for the application and handle the response there. For OIDC, Auth0 recommends the authorization endpoint such as
/authorize; a direct/loginURL can fail when no default login route is configured. See Auth0’s implementation overview.
Check prerequisites before choosing templates
Auth0’s page-template guidance requires a custom domain. Auth0’s Organizations documentation describes custom domains as a paid-plan feature, so confirm the current plan and tenant eligibility rather than assuming templates are available on a free tier. The prerequisite and plan context are documented in Auth0’s page-template support article and organization setup guide.
Test the complete authentication journey
A login page is only one part of the user’s authentication experience. Test the paths your application actually enables, including:

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
- Sign-in and signup, including validation and error states.
- Password reset and any account-recovery steps.
- MFA challenges and relevant social or enterprise connections.
- Localization and the language of labels, hints, and errors.
- Keyboard navigation, screen-reader output, focus behavior, and text contrast.
Auth0 says its Universal Login experience is designed to meet WCAG 2.2 AA and EN 301 549, and documents features such as inline validation, screen-reader navigation attributes, associated labels, and distinct page titles. Treat that as a statement about the default experience, not a guarantee that custom content or layout remains conformant. Recheck accessibility after each change. See Auth0’s Universal Login Experience documentation.
Why not switch to Classic Login for more freedom?
Classic Login allows substantial HTML and JavaScript customization, but Auth0 says it no longer receives updates. Its documentation also warns that once a tenant customizes a Classic page, the tenant is responsible for maintaining it, including updating included SDK or widget versions. Auth0 cautions about cross-site scripting (XSS), particularly when third-party JavaScript is added to the login page. Those costs are hard to justify for branding alone. See Auth0’s Classic Login customization guidance.

Deeper Universal Login customization also needs careful implementation. Auth0 support warns that CSS class names can change and that JavaScript tied to a rigid page DOM may break without warning. Prefer supported theme, text, and partial controls where they are enough; test template or script changes against the current experience rather than treating internal markup as a stable interface. Auth0’s page-template support article covers these caveats.
