There is no one-for-one Auth0 replacement for every AI-agent authentication need. Microsoft Entra Agent ID suits Microsoft-centric organisations that need programmatic agent identities; WorkOS AuthKit documents OAuth authorisation for MCP servers and a separate agent-registration feature; and Descope documents agent credentials, MCP authorisation and a way to keep an existing user-identity provider. Choose according to who the agent represents, what it can access and where authorisation must be enforced—not just by comparing product names.
Which Auth0 alternative fits your use case?
These products overlap, but they do not all sit at the same layer. An agent identity service, a customer identity platform, an MCP authorisation server and a gateway can address connected parts of a deployment without being substitutes for one another.

Before selecting a provider, decide whether an agent acts autonomously as itself or performs work on behalf of a person. Those models affect the identity in a token, the permissions to grant and what an audit record needs to show. Microsoft documents both client-credential patterns for autonomous agents and On-Behalf-Of (OBO) patterns for delegated access. It describes agent entities as confidential clients: “All agent entities are confidential clients that can also serve as APIs for On-Behalf-Of scenarios.” (Microsoft Learn, “Authentication protocols in agents.”)

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Autonomous agent: determine which actions it may perform under its own identity and which resources may accept that identity.
- Agent acting for a person: establish how delegated permissions and user context are represented, and whether logs preserve both the agent and the person it acts for.
- Human sign-in is not the whole agent model: Microsoft documents programmatic confidential-client flows for agent entities and excludes interactive authorisation flows for them in the described model. Auth0’s AI product material also says agents should be modelled distinctly from regular users.
Authentication establishes identity; authorisation determines whether a particular action on a particular resource is permitted. Microsoft Learn describes OpenID Connect as an authentication protocol built on OAuth 2.0. For agent access, focus on the token’s intended resource and audience, its subject and actor context, its scopes or roles, its lifetime, and the resource server’s checks.
What each option documents
Microsoft Entra Agent ID
Microsoft describes Entra Agent ID for programmatic agent identities and token acquisition, covering autonomous agents and agents acting on behalf of a user. Microsoft recommends approved SDKs rather than manually implementing protocol exchanges, which it says can be complex and error-prone.
For an MCP server, Microsoft’s documented model treats the server as a protected resource and Entra as the authorisation server. The server validates the token’s signature, issuer, tenant, audience and expiry, then checks the subject’s role or another authorisation policy. For delegated tokens, it also checks scopes. Microsoft says an AI agent client should use Agent ID rather than an embedded secret.

- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
This is not automatically a cross-cloud, embeddable customer-identity replacement. Confirm tenant requirements and design the app roles or scopes the resource will actually enforce.
WorkOS AuthKit and Agent Registration
WorkOS documents AuthKit as an OAuth authorisation server for authenticated MCP servers. Its MCP documentation describes ID-JAG token exchange support as well as a standalone MCP OAuth path for teams retaining their existing user authentication.
WorkOS documents Agent Registration separately for programmatic agent credentials, including registration through authorisation-server metadata and optional user binding. Its documentation says the feature must be enabled for an environment and directs customers to their account team if it is unavailable. Do not assume it is enabled for every customer or environment.

Descope Agentic Identity Hub
Descope documents Python and TypeScript Agent Auth SDKs that sign in an agent and obtain resource tokens or third-party connection tokens when tools need them. Its MCP materials describe managed authorisation and scopes for tool calls.
Recommended Free Tools
Descope also documents a bring-your-own-auth design: an existing user-identity source, including Auth0, can remain in place while Descope issues MCP-oriented OAuth tokens. That may support an incremental design, but confirm how tokens, consent, any credential vault, policies and required regions fit your security and data-boundary requirements. Descope’s product descriptions are vendor claims, not independent evidence of superiority.
Keeping Auth0
Switching providers is not the only option. Auth0 describes central authorisation and auditable agent actions in its AI product material. Its August 2026 article discusses Cross App Access for enterprise-managed authorisation involving APIs and MCP servers. An existing customer should check whether the specific capability it needs is available in its environment before weighing migration cost and risk.

Do not mistake an MCP gateway for server authorisation
A gateway can place multiple MCP servers behind one endpoint, route credentials, apply tool controls and log calls. It does not remove the need for each underlying MCP server to authorise requests. Microsoft requires token validation and an authorisation check before a requested tool runs; WorkOS makes the same distinction in its gateway comparison.
Gateway products also occupy different positions in the request path. WorkOS characterises Cloudflare MCP portals as an employee-facing catalogue behind Access, Okta Agent Gateway as an identity-native proxy, Auth0 Agent Gateway as aimed at agents inside a multi-tenant SaaS product, and Microsoft’s MCP firewall as a control on managed-device network traffic. These descriptions represent different use cases, not interchangeable versions of an identity platform.

Check the authorisation boundary and credential flow
For an MCP deployment, Microsoft’s guide describes the server as an OAuth protected resource, the identity provider as authorisation server, and the agent client as token requester. It says the requested resource must match the server’s configured application identifier, and that the server must validate the token before executing a tool. Use official libraries where available rather than hand-rolling token validation.
- Resource and audience: verify that a token is issued for the intended MCP server or API, and that the server rejects tokens meant for another resource.
- Action-level policy: decide whether access is controlled at the user session, API, MCP server, individual tool or tenant boundary. A valid token alone does not establish permission for every tool.
- Credential handling: assess short-lived, audience-bound resource tokens, delegated exchanges and any vaulting of upstream OAuth credentials. Avoid exposing long-lived secrets to agent code or prompts.
- Administration: verify how administrators grant consent, audit activity, change policy and revoke access in the specific product, environment and SKU. The cited product material does not establish feature parity across providers.
- Existing login: validate the actual integration path if you plan to retain current user authentication while adding MCP authorisation; documented support does not by itself establish a migration plan for your application.
- Availability: check tenant enablement, geography, plan and release status directly with the vendor before committing to an architecture.
A practical selection sequence
- Map actors and actions. List which agents act autonomously, which act for a user, which tools they call and what each action is allowed to do.
- Mark enforcement points. Identify the user-identity layer, token issuer, gateway if any, each MCP server and each protected API. Assign a concrete authorisation check at the resource that performs the action.
- Choose the identity model. Start with Entra when programmatic agent identities in a Microsoft-protected environment are central. Evaluate AuthKit when adding standards-based MCP OAuth while retaining existing login is important. Evaluate Descope when its documented agent-token and MCP layer fits, including a bring-your-own-auth design. Keep Auth0 in scope if its required feature is already available and migration adds little value.
- Trace token and secret handling. Document who issues each token, its audience, scopes or roles, lifetime, where credentials are stored, and which components can read them.
- Test revocation and audit behavior. Establish how a user, agent, grant or credential can be disabled, and what actor and user context appears in records. Confirm details for the actual configuration rather than inferring them from a feature label.
- Confirm production availability. Verify enablement, preview or beta status, regional and plan limits, and support commitments with the vendor for the exact deployment.
What the available evidence cannot rank
The cited material documents product capabilities and implementation requirements, but does not provide a controlled comparison of cost, latency, security outcomes, adoption or market share. It also does not establish identical consent, audit, revocation or lifecycle features across providers. Treat vendor descriptions as a basis for a requirements check, not proof that one option is universally safer or better.
