Before deleting developer-related files, identify what they are and whether they can be recreated. macOS System Data is a changing category—not one folder—and it can include both temporary files and resources the system manages. Start in Storage, inspect large items through the app that owns them, remove only what you no longer need, and compare the storage figures afterward.
What System Data means on a Mac
Apple uses System Data for files that do not fit more specific storage categories. Depending on the Mac’s current state, it can include logs, caches, virtual-memory files, runtime resources, temporary files, fonts, app-support files, and plug-ins. Its contents and size can change; macOS manages this category. It is not a single folder that you can safely empty. Apple’s Mac storage guidance describes the category and its variable contents.

How to inspect storage before cleanup
Open the Storage view
-
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open System Settings > General > Storage. On earlier macOS releases, open About This Mac > Storage. These are Apple’s documented paths; labels may differ in later releases. Apple’s storage instructions cover both routes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Wait for the view to finish updating. Note total capacity, available space, and the displayed category figures. This is your baseline; there is no universal amount of developer cache space that every Mac can reclaim.

Open category details or information buttons where available. For items not exposed there, inspect them in Finder or in the app that created them. Storage does not provide one complete, manageable file list for System Data.
Classify each large item before acting

Potentially regenerable data: build intermediates and caches may be removable only if the owning app can recreate them or continue without them. Confirm their purpose rather than relying on a folder name. Apple’s developer guidance defines cache and temporary data by whether it can be recreated or dispensed with, not simply by where it is stored: Caching and Purgeable Memory.
-
Simulator components: runtimes provide operating-system versions for testing, while simulator devices represent configured test devices. Keep the combinations your work still supports.

These are the documented Xcode controls for runtimes and simulator devices. Interface details can change between Xcode releases, so check the menus in your installed version. Apple’s Xcode components documentation explains runtime management.
Review Xcode archives before removing them
In Xcode, open the Archives organizer and check whether each archive is still needed for distribution, release history, or debugging. Xcode’s Product > Archive workflow creates outputs that can be exported or distributed later. Remove an archive only after deciding that you no longer need that use. Apple’s distribution documentation describes the archive and distribution workflow.
Check Content Caching if it is enabled
Content Caching is a macOS service separate from ordinary Xcode build output. It can store Apple software, iCloud content, and downloadable Xcode components such as simulator runtimes. If this Mac uses the service, inspect System Settings > General > Sharing > Content Caching for storage use and the configured cache size. Apple provides a Reset control to clear cached content. Before using it, consider whether other devices rely on this Mac’s cache: clearing it can mean that content must be downloaded again. See Apple’s Content Caching guide for settings and controls.
Use Safe Mode only for a temporary need
Apple says starting in Safe Mode clears certain caches that macOS can recreate. This may temporarily free space—for example, when you need to complete an installation—but it is not a permanent cache-cleaning routine. Apple’s storage guidance describes this behavior.

Verify what changed
After each cleanup, return to the same Storage view and compare its available-space and category figures with your baseline. Allow time for the display to refresh. Record the change you actually see on your Mac; neither a specific cache size nor a guaranteed amount of reclaimed space applies to every system.
What not to delete blindly
-
Do not try to empty System Data as a whole or remove arbitrary contents of system-managed directories.
-
Do not assume that everything in
~/Libraryor any folder containing “cache” is disposable. Establish ownership, purpose, and recoverability first.Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Do not remove Simulator runtimes needed for current test targets, or archives needed for a release or debugging.
-
Do not mistake Content Caching for developer build data; it may serve other Apple content and other devices on the network.
-
Avoid recursive Terminal deletion commands aimed at hard-coded cache paths. A path that appears disposable in one setup may contain useful data or behave differently across macOS and Xcode versions.
