Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo concatenate audio files reliably, decide the segment order, preserve each segment’s identity, choose whether edits keep or close gaps, and listen to the joins before delivery. In Audacity, you can arrange tracks end to end, name tracks or labels for exports, and choose whether to create one continuous file or separate files.
What concatenation does—and when it is the wrong operation
Concatenation places audio segments one after another in a sequence. It does not blend overlapping audio. If narration should play over music, or if two clips should overlap in a transition, you need a mix or crossfade instead. Audacity distinguishes track operations, while its crossfade feature blends audio across a transition.

Set sequence and identity before arranging clips
Make the order explicit
Do not rely on the order files happen to import or appear in a folder. For handoffs, give segments clear numeric prefixes such as 01-, 02-, and 03-, followed by a useful description: 01-intro, 02-interview, 03-outro. The prefixes are a practical naming convention, not an Audacity requirement. Audacity’s multi-file export can also add sequential numbers to output names. See the Export Multiple manual.
Keep names attached to the audio
Name clips, tracks, or labels so that another editor can identify their content without consulting a separate message. Audacity supports clip renaming and label editing, and its export options can use track or label text as output filenames. Confirm that the chosen names are distinct and follow the team’s naming convention before exporting. The relevant controls are documented in the Clip manual and Labels Editor manual.

Choose whether a gap stays, disappears, or becomes silence
These choices change timing differently, especially when dialogue must stay synchronized with music, effects, or other tracks.
Recommended Free Tools
| Edit choice | What happens to the selected span | Effect on later audio | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave a gap | The empty time remains. | Later audio keeps its timing. | Use when the pause or synchronization position matters. |
| Ripple delete | The selected span is removed. | Later audio shifts earlier to close the gap. | Use when you want a shorter, continuous sequence and the shift is intentional. |
| Silence audio | The selected duration remains, but its sound is replaced by silence. | Later audio stays in place. | Use when timing must remain fixed but the selected sound should not be heard. |
Audacity documents these operations in its Edit menu and audio editing guide. Check the selected range and affected tracks before applying an operation; a ripple edit can move material that was meant to remain synchronized.

Choose one continuous export or separate files
Decide what the recipient needs before export: one continuous audio file, or multiple files split at defined boundaries. In Audacity, Export Multiple can split output by tracks or labels and use track or label names in filenames. Sequential numbering is also available to make output order explicit. See the Export Multiple manual.
Use labels when boundaries define the deliverables
A point label marks a position, such as the start of a section. A region label covers a span. Use region labels when each exported file should correspond to a defined section of the timeline, and check that each region begins and ends where intended. Audacity describes these label types in its Label Tracks manual.
Check for clicks and confirm the delivered sequence
Listen through the joins in the combined result, not just to the first and last segments. Audacity’s FAQ suggests choosing edit points at zero crossings to reduce the risk of clicks, but that does not guarantee a click-free join: DC offset or a poorly chosen edit can still contribute to clicks. Audition the edit and adjust it if needed. See the Audacity FAQ and its Selection Toolbar manual.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Confirm the sequence against the intended segment list.
- Check that gaps, pauses, and synchronization points behave as intended.
- Listen across every join and at the beginning and end of the export.
- Verify whether the delivery should be one file or several, and whether exported names and numbering are clear.
Check format support before handing off
Make sure the Audacity installation can import the source files and export the required delivery format. Audacity support documents optional FFmpeg support for a wider range of formats, including M4A and WMA. Requirements depend on the format and platform, so check the current FFmpeg installation guidance if a file cannot be imported or the target format is unavailable.
