A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Yes—you can connect an active subwoofer to a speaker system when the source and subwoofer have compatible inputs and outputs. The most common route is an RCA subwoofer output from a receiver, preamp, or powered speaker to the subwoofer’s line or LFE input. If the source has no subwoofer line output, speaker wire is an option only when the subwoofer explicitly provides high-level inputs.
First, identify what each device can send and receive
An active subwoofer has its own amplifier, but that does not mean it can connect directly to every speaker or amplifier. The other device must provide a compatible signal output, and the subwoofer must have the matching input.

- Source output: Look for a jack labeled SUB OUT, SUBWOOFER, or LFE; a powered speaker may have a dedicated Sub Out. An amplifier without one may offer only amplified speaker terminals.
- Subwoofer input: Look for RCA line/LFE inputs or, if you need a speaker-wire connection, terminals specifically labeled for high-level or speaker-level input.
- Filtering: Determine whether the receiver, powered speaker, or subwoofer controls the crossover and whether the main speakers are filtered after the subwoofer is connected.
These labels and features vary by model. Check both manuals before wiring; a connector that looks familiar does not establish that two devices are compatible.

Receiver or preamp with a subwoofer output
Connect the receiver or preamp’s SUB OUT to the active subwoofer’s RCA line/LFE input. Klipsch describes this as a standard powered-subwoofer connection. If the subwoofer has two RCA inputs, do not assume both are required: check the manual for the correct jack and connection method. Configure the receiver to use a subwoofer and set its speaker sizes and crossover as directed by the receiver’s instructions.

Powered speaker with Sub Out
A powered speaker can feed an active subwoofer directly when it has a dedicated subwoofer output and the subwoofer has a compatible line or LFE input. For example, Klipsch’s The Fives instructions specify an RCA cable from Sub Out to RCA Line In or LFE. Those speakers apply an 80 Hz high-pass filter to their own output and an 80 Hz low-pass filter to the subwoofer output when connected. These are The Fives’ documented behaviors, not settings to assume for other speakers: Klipsch The Fives subwoofer connection instructions.
SVS gives a different model-specific setup for the Prime Wireless Pro: connect SUB OUT to the subwoofer’s LFE input with RCA, use its active 80 Hz high-pass on the speaker output, and set the subwoofer low-pass to 90 Hz. Yamaha’s NX-70A instructions likewise call for a mono RCA cable from the primary speaker’s SUBWOOFER jack to an active subwoofer, and advise running YPAO after connecting or disconnecting a subwoofer or adjusting speaker setup manually in the app. Follow the instructions for your own equipment rather than copying another model’s crossover settings: SVS Prime Wireless Pro setup and Yamaha NX-70A instructions.

Amplifier or receiver without a subwoofer line output
Speaker wire may work if the active subwoofer has high-level inputs designed to accept speaker-level signal. Connect the amplifier’s speaker terminals to those inputs exactly as the manuals specify. Some subwoofers also have speaker-level outputs that pass the signal onward to speakers, but their presence and wiring are model-specific. Yamaha’s NS-SW1000 manual, for instance, distinguishes speaker-level INPUT1 from line-level INPUT2 and LFE INPUT3, and routes the INPUT1 signal to the subwoofer’s speaker outputs. Do not assume another subwoofer has the same terminals or signal routing: Yamaha NS-SW1000 manual.

Set bass management and check the result
A receiver configured for subwoofer use can send the LFE channel and bass redirected from other speakers to the subwoofer. Yamaha’s RX300A documentation describes that behavior. The receiver’s speaker configuration, crossover, and source routing determine what reaches the subwoofer, so check those settings rather than relying on the physical connection alone: Yamaha RX300A subwoofer configuration.

- If the receiver controls the crossover: Use its speaker configuration and crossover settings. Klipsch advises turning the subwoofer’s low-pass control fully up when the receiver is setting the crossover: Klipsch receiver connection guidance.
- If the subwoofer controls the low-pass filter: Choose a setting suited to the speakers and system. Klipsch suggests 80 Hz as a starting point in its guidance; SVS specifies 90 Hz for its Prime Wireless Pro setup. Neither value is a universal setting.
- Check main-speaker filtering: Some powered speakers automatically high-pass their own output after a subwoofer is connected, while others may not. Confirm what your model does before changing settings.
- Follow safe connection procedure: If the equipment manual says to power devices off before connecting, do so. Follow its wiring and power cautions throughout setup.
Avoid unsupported combinations
Do not connect line/LFE and speaker-wire inputs to the same subwoofer at once unless its documentation explicitly permits that configuration. Klipsch notes that some older subs may allow it, but combining the inputs is not recommended for many current models and can damage subwoofer electronics. If the manual does not make the permitted connection clear, contact the manufacturer before trying it: Klipsch connection guidance.

If the source has an RCA subwoofer output and the subwoofer has a matching RCA line/LFE input, a single RCA subwoofer cable is the appropriate basic connection. Check the port labels and cable length for your setup before buying. If the source has no subwoofer line output, an RCA cable cannot solve the mismatch; the subwoofer needs documented high-level inputs for a speaker-wire connection.
