Spotify can suit listeners who already have an eligible Premium plan and stay within its monthly audiobook-hour allowance. Kobo offers credits, individual purchases and unlimited listening within its Kobo Plus audiobook catalog. Audible is also worth comparing: its Standard and Premium plans provide different access and retention terms.
Before choosing, check whether the books you want are actually included, how much listening your plan covers, what happens when you cancel, and whether the service works on your devices in your country.

How to choose an Audible alternative
Compare access models rather than monthly prices alone. A monthly hour allowance, a credit for a title, a subscription catalog and an individual purchase are not interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Check your listening volume: Spotify’s eligible Premium allowance is capped by hours. Credit plans and purchases do not use that same allowance.
- Search for the books you want: Inclusion in a service catalog is title-specific and can vary by country. A large catalog does not guarantee that a particular book or edition is available.
- Understand what you keep: An owned purchase, a selected title available during membership, and access to an included catalog can have different cancellation consequences.
- Check plan eligibility and devices: Some plans extend audiobook hours only to the account manager, and playback support differs by service and device.
Spotify: audiobook hours with eligible Premium plans
Spotify includes monthly audiobook listening time from its subscriber catalog on eligible plans: Individual, and the plan manager on Family or Duo. Student is not eligible, according to Spotify’s Premium plan support page. Family and Duo members other than the manager do not receive the manager’s included hours, though the manager can buy member-specific add-ons or top-ups.
How Spotify counts listening time
Spotify charges listening against the audiobook’s normal duration. Playing at 2x speed does not halve the hours used, and replaying part or all of a title uses additional allowance. Unused monthly plan hours expire at the next billing-period reset.
Spotify also distinguishes recurring add-ons from one-time top-ups: add-ons reset monthly, while top-ups are valid for 12 months. You need an eligible Premium plan to use top-up hours. If you cancel Premium, you lose access to add-ons and unused top-ups unless you resubscribe within 12 months, and a top-up still expires on its original expiry date. Check Spotify’s current top-up terms before relying on unused hours.
Catalog availability and scale
The subscriber catalog and separately unlockable titles are not necessarily the same. Availability can vary by country and title or rights holder, so search for the specific book in your account before treating it as included. Spotify reported on April 15, 2026 that Audiobooks in Premium was live in 22 markets and its catalog had grown from 150,000 to more than 700,000 titles. Those are Spotify-reported figures, not a guarantee of local availability for any particular book; see its April 15, 2026 announcement.

Kobo: credits, purchases and Kobo Plus
Kobo’s U.S. plans page describes audiobook credit subscriptions, a three-credit pack and à-la-carte purchases. Kobo Plus plans that include audiobooks provide unlimited listening to titles in the Kobo Plus catalog—not unlimited access to every audiobook Kobo sells. Search for your intended titles in that catalog before choosing a plan. Plan details are on Kobo’s U.S. audiobook plans page.
Where you can listen
Kobo lists its free Kobo Books app for supported Android and iOS phones and tablets. It also supports listening on selected Kobo eReaders paired with Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Some Kobo eReaders cannot play audiobooks; check Kobo’s current device support list and the exact model before buying hardware.

Audible still offers more than one access model
Audible is a useful baseline because Standard and Premium differ in what the monthly plan provides. In its U.S. announcement, Audible listed Standard at $8.99 per month and Premium at $14.95 per month. The announcement also covered Standard availability in the U.K., Canada, Australia, Germany and France; those U.S. prices should not be applied to other countries. Prices and terms may change, so confirm the current local offer.

| Plan | Monthly access described in Audible’s announcement | What happens to the selected or credited title |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | One monthly audiobook selection plus unlimited listening to a curated catalog | The selected title remains accessible while membership is active |
| Premium | One monthly credit plus unlimited listening to Audible’s full included catalog in the U.S. plan announced | The monthly credit is for a title to keep |
These are the terms in Audible’s plan announcement, not a guarantee that every market currently has identical pricing or terms. For the U.S. details, see Audible’s Standard plan announcement.

What happens when you cancel?
Cancellation can affect unused allowances and subscription access differently from purchased titles. The clearest distinctions established here are that Spotify monthly included hours expire at the billing reset, Spotify add-ons reset monthly, and top-ups have a 12-month validity period subject to Premium eligibility and the cancellation rules above. Audible’s announcement says a Standard selection stays accessible only while membership remains active, whereas its Premium credit is for a title to keep.
Audible help information also indicates that purchased titles remain listenable after cancellation while included titles and unused Premium credits may be lost. Because the exact current wording was not established in the available help content, check Audible’s cancellation terms for your account before canceling. If your subscription is billed through Apple or Google, the billing provider may require cancellation through its own subscription settings.
Which service fits which listener?
- Choose Spotify as a candidate if you already have an eligible Premium plan, the books you want are in its subscriber catalog, and your listening fits the monthly hour limit. It is a poor fit if you need more hours than the allowance or expect unused hours to carry forward.
- Compare Kobo if you prefer credits or individual purchases, or if the books you want are in Kobo Plus’s included audiobook catalog and you want unlimited listening to those catalog titles.
- Compare Audible Standard and Premium if you are open to staying with Audible but want to distinguish a monthly selection and curated catalog from a credit for a title to keep and the broader included catalog described for Premium.
For any option, verify the specific title, plan availability in your country and playback support on your phone, tablet or eReader before subscribing or purchasing hardware.
